News Disney+

The cast of disney’s jungle cruise talks humor, heart, and adventure.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for… the amazing… the colossal… the stupendous… the eighth wonder of the world… The back side of water, on the big screen! That’s right, the long-awaited film adaptation of Disney’s Jungle Cruise is finally here, taking the Disney Parks attraction we know and love and bringing it to life. Actors Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, and Edgar Ramírez sat down in July to talk about their new movie, Disney’s Jungle Cruise , when it first came to theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access.

Dwayne Johnson, who plays skipper Frank Wolff, is also a producer on the film. He explains of his decision to climb aboard the project, “I immediately just saw the potential of the opportunity to [adapt] a beloved and iconic Disney ride since 1955 when the park opened. This was Walt Disney's baby.” And the spirit of the attraction is alive in this film. Jack Whitehall, who plays MacGregor Houghton, brother to Emily Blunt’s Lily Houghton, says, “I would say the element to the Jungle Cruise ride that I like the most is that it doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think that that is definitely something that we took over into the movie.” Blunt shares, “I know when [Dwayne] and I first met Jaume [Collet-Serra, the director], we both asked him the same question. We said, ‘Well, what do you feel this movie's about?’ And he goes, "You know, it's about love." It was so perfect, 'cause you could've talked about all the action, the spectacle, and the myths, and the legends, and all that. But that's when I knew in Jaume we had an innate romantic, and a world builder, and that's what you need for this type of movie.”

The History and Evolution of the Disney’s Jungle Cruise

jungle cruise 1955 movie cast

Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. Everything from the distinctive ride vehicles, comical tableaus, animatronic animals, and even the purposely over-the-top skipper spiel have become iconic elements of the Disney theme park experience, explaining why the Jungle Cruise has been cloned to nearly every Disney resort around the world.

However, despite its beloved stature, the attraction has met its fair share of controversy over the years, which has led to numerous changes, including a major refurbishment in 2021 .

To analyze this attraction’s controversial history, we must first look at its origins, years before Disneyland was constructed.

The origins.

The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series. Beginning with Seal Island in 1948, these somewhat staged wildlife documentaries followed various groups of animals in their natural habitats. The series was so successful with movie-goers and critics that it eventually evolved from two-reel shorts to full-length documentary films that quickly became a cornerstone of Walt Disney Studios.

Guests would view the animals from skipper-guided ride-vehicles modeled after the titular boat from the 1951 hit film The African Queen, while traveling through a jungle designed by Disneyland landscape extraordinaire Bill Evans.

Welcome to the Jungle

Jungle Cruise opened with the rest of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. Sure they would be familiar with Goff’s general concept, and if they squinted they could imagine how the rather light jungle Evans planted would grow into the lush greenery seen today, but many iconic elements of the attraction would be absent. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. In fact, there was no humor period.

The Jungle Cruise, like Disneyland overall, was a massive success upon its opening, quickly becoming an integral part of American pop culture. However, as the park’s first decade came to a close, Walt Disney felt his park needed some new blood. According to legend, he once overheard a child ask his mother to ride the Jungle Cruise and was aghast when the mother responded that they’d ridden it last time and didn’t need to again. Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions.

One of the first attractions Davis – who would go on to become one of the company’s most influential Imagineers – worked on was Jungle Cruise. A visual comedian by nature, Davis decided to liven up the attraction by adding the playful elephant pool and comical trapped safari sequences.

These comedic elements in-turn influenced the ride’s skipper narration, which became more and more comical over the years. Davis’ changes led to the attraction becoming even more popular.

Disney World’s Jungle Cruise

The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971.

jungle cruise 1955 movie cast

The Orlando version of the ride was similar to its Anaheim counterpart, though not a direct clone, and served the same purpose as the anchor attraction of the park’s Adventureland section.

Jungle Cruise International

A near-direct clone of the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction opened with Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, but when Disneyland Paris, then known as EuroDisney, opened in 1992, the park became the first “castle park” not to feature a Jungle Cruise on opening day. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks.

Disneyland Levels Up

While these alternate versions of the Jungle Cruise were being built around the world, the Disneyland original continued to be “plussed” over the years. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, various new animals and show-scenes were added to the attraction. The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy.

While these changes were substantial, they were nothing compared to the original plans , which were going to see a portion of the Jungle Cruise take place inside the Indiana Jones show building, as part of a plan to build a massive complex that would house four attractions.

Holiday Overlays

Following these mid-90s refurbishments, the Jungle Cruise continued to be one of Disney’s marquee attractions. As a testament to said importance, in 2013, both American versions of the attraction were given a holiday overlay and temporarily renamed The Jingle Cruise.

The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day.

Controversy in the Jungle

Despite Jungle Cruise’s ongoing popularity, in recent decades the attraction has become controversial due to its purported negative depictions of native people, specifically the “headhunter” party as well as the Trader Sam “head salesman” character.

jungle cruise 1955 movie cast

In January 2021,  Disney announced that it would be making significant story changes to the Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World to alleviate these issues. Carmen Smith, creative development and inclusion strategies executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the changes in a statement to the Los Angeles Times , saying:

As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us. With Jungle Cruise, we’re bringing to life more of what people love – the humor and wit of our incredible skippers — while making needed updates.

Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger added , “The exciting changes we’re making to one of Disney’s most popular classic attractions, Jungle Cruise, reflect our commitment to creating unparalleled experiences that reflect, not only the best in storytelling, but also the values and rich diversity of our world.”

jungle cruise 1955 movie cast

As part of these announcements, Disney made it clear that these changes to the attraction were not going to be related to the upcoming film based on the attraction.

jungle cruise 1955 movie cast

Said film, simply titled Jungle Cruise , was released in July of 2021. The film starred Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. It was such a hit, a sequel is already in the works.

How do you feel about the upcoming changes to the Jungle Cruise? Do you agree that they’ve been years in the making? Beyond that, how do you feel about the attraction overall? Let us know in the comments below.

I was a ride operator (skipper) in 1975-1977 on the Jungle Cruise. I didn’t realize at the time how fortunate I was to have been chosen (I did have to audition/interview and learn a 14-page script to be considered) and it turned out to be a great experience, full of lifelong memories and skills (social skills, kindness, and comedy). I can still recite most of the script after all these years. It was a great time in my life. I am proud that I was part of the Jungle Cruise legacy.

Jungle Cruise: What to know about Disney's latest ride-to-screen movie ahead of its swashbuckling debut

Jungle Cruise Still

We have our heading! In an effort to repeat the massive success of its  Pirates of the Caribbean   film   franchise, Disney is once again plumbing the depths of its beloved theme parks with another big-screen adventure inspired by a decades-long attraction: Disneyland's Jungle Cruise .

Clearly drawing from the pulpy and swashbuckling exploits of Old Hollywood, Jungle Cruise features  Dwayne Johnson ,  Emily Blunt , and Jack Whitehall on a wild expedition through the dangerous waters of the Amazon jungle.

Plot your course, haul up the anchor, and dive below for a quick primer on everything you need to know about the movie before it makes port later this month...

How to watch

Just like the studio's other major releases from 2021 —  Raya and the Last Dragon , Cruella , and Black Widow  —  Jungle Cruise will receive a dual rollout in theaters and on Disney+, starting Friday, July 30.

If you'd like to check out the film from the comfort of your own home — no judgements here — you'll need to book virtual passage with an additional and one-time Premier Access fee of $29.99 on top of your existing Disney+ subscription (digital pre-orders are now open). Streaming releases usually drop onto the platform around 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET.

If you're up to returning to theaters, however, you can reserve your tickets on Fandango now.

Originally slated to open exclusively in theaters last July, Jungle Cruise was ultimately delayed by an entire year by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ride to screen

The original Jungle Cruise  boat ride first opened in July of 1955 (it'll celebrate 66 years this Saturday) at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

"Based on Disney’s award-winning True-Life Adventure films, the attraction had a more educational tone," reads the official description on the Disney Parks website . "In the early 1960s, Walt Disney introduced more drama and asked animator Marc Davis to sketch some humorous gags. Over the years, more 'wildlife' — and new wisecracks — were added. These updates, along with our talented skippers, make for fun surprises on every trip down the river."

In anticipation of the movie's release, Disney added some new bells and whistles to the ride. SYFY WIRE was one of the few outlets to check out the updated experience at a recent press event. Click here to learn more about it.

The swashbuckling set-up

Set against the period backdrop of World War I, Jungle Cruise follows Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt), an intrepid British physician looking to find a mythical tree deep within the Amazon that is said to possess miraculous healing properties. Along with her brother, MacGregor (Whitehall), Lily charters a ride on the La Quila, a ramshackle, yet charming, tramp steamer captained by the wisecracking Frank Wolff (Johnson).

It's very clear that the movie wants to recapture the mismatched dynamic of Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn in 1951's The African Queen . (The film's influence actually goes all the way back to the conception of the original Jungle Cruise  ride when production designer Harper Goff looked to Charlie Allnut's iconic boat for inspiration.)

"The Rock is fine," Bogart's son, Stephen, recently told Entertainment Weekly . "He's got a great personality. He seems like a very good person. I think he works hard; he cares about it, and I'll go see the movie. It'll be fun. But I never thought of it as a continuation [of The African Queen ], nor do I think Dwayne Johnson is trying to be Humphrey Bogart, that'd be tough."

Ok, let's get back to the plot, shall we? While on their epic journey, Lily, Frank, and MacGregor encounter dangerous wildlife (like a mean-eating jaguar named Proxima), hitherto unseen supernatural entities (like undead conquistadors), and a German royal ( Breaking Bad 's Jesse Plemons) also looking to get his grubby hands on the magical tree.

Edgar Ramírez ( Bright ) and Paul Giamatti ( Gunpowder Milkshake ) round out the rest of the cast.

All hands on deck

Written by Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra, and John Requa, Jungle Cruise was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who is currently working with Dwayne Johnson on Warner Bros.' Black Adam . Johnson serves as a producer alongside John Davis, John Fox, Hiram Garcia, and Dany Garcia. Scott Sheldon and Doug Merrifield are executive producers. The film's story is by John Norville and Josh Goldstein, and Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, while the screenplay was written by Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra, and John Requa.

A making-of book by Michael Goldman goes on sale the same day as the movie opens, July 30.

"There were several things that blew me away, so it is hard to pick one," Goldman said during an interview for D23 last year. "The production design and the effort taken to design and build the port town of Porto Velho was far beyond what is normal on such films. Likewise, the attention paid to designing era- and culturally appropriate props, hair, and makeup was amazing. The construction of the tramp steamer boat, La Quila, the home to Dwayne Johnson’s character, Frank, was a massive logistical achievement. And then there were the complex visual effects, particularly the state-of-the-art digital work used to create the ferocious jaguar Proxima, and to put a supernatural vibe on the conquistador characters who have been trapped in the jungle for a very long time."

Jungle Cruise

Riding into the future

Jungle Cruise is one of several upcoming projects based on Disney Parks attractions.

As of this writing, movies based on The Haunted Mansion   (to be directed by Bad Hair 's Justin Simien), Tower of Terror   (to be executive produced by  Black Widow 's Scarlett Johansson), and Space Mountain   (from Obi-Wan and Army of the Dead writer Joby Harold) are all in active development.

Keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times!

Jungle Cruise sets sail Friday, July 30 in theaters and on Disney+.

Today marks 65 years since Disneyland’s grand opening on July 17, 1955. This celebratory anniversary also extends to the park’s opening day attractions that are still in operation today, including the dad-joke filled voyage that is Jungle Cruise . The ride is just one of the many ideas from Walt Disney’s imagination that were brought to life for his groundbreaking theme park. This unique distinction has turned Jungle Cruise into one of the most beloved attractions at now multiple Disney parks across the globe.

At D23 in 2019, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt assured the audience, made up of Disney’s biggest fans, that the sentimental origins of the ride were not lost on the cast of its feature-film adaptation. Johnson made a grand entrance into the large auditorium at the Anaheim Convention Center riding on a decorated riverboat. Blunt was “driven” into the presentation in a classic car from the early 20th-century era, where both Jungle Cruise and its cinematic homage take place.

Johnson, who’s been attached as a star and producer on the movie since it was first announced in 2015, let the crowd know he’s been studying up when he said, “When the park opened in 1955, Walt Disney had one baby and that baby was Jungle Cruise. He was the very first Jungle Cruise skipper. So we are very honored to bring this movie to life on behalf of Disney and Walt Disney himself.”

“It's just insane and the energy is so incredible. Die-hard Disney fans,” Blunt told ET after the event.

“I think there was such great anticipation for Jungle Cruise for so long, since it's part of the fabric of people's lives. For generations. Years and years,” said Johnson. For his part, Johnson also spent time with Disney’s legendary Imagineering team to learn about the attraction’s deep ties in the history of Disneyland.

While Jungle Cruise is technically the first movie adaptation of the attraction, it will arrive decades after The African Queen , the silver screen classic that partly inspired the ride. Walt Disney was also drawn to the idea of recreating the environments captured in his True-Life Adventures film series. In particular, The African Lion , which featured wildlife footage captured from multiple countries across the continent.

Another layer of magic to Jungle Cruise’s endurance over the past 65 years is that the ride’s format has remained relatively unchanged. Guests step off a dock and onto boats that turn everyone into early 20th-century explorers. As riders voyage through exotic rivers around the world, they’re greeted by animatronic wildlife at every turn. One of the fan favorites among them is the elephant seen in the photo below, who’s clearly living their best life.

Okay, maybe one aspect of the ride has evolved since its debut. While Jungle Cruise was originally more of an educational experience for guests, jokes and puns from the boat’s “skippers” later became a trademark of the attraction. And one joke is more iconic than any of them. As the boat is about to float behind a waterfall, the skipper announces with terrific fanfare something along the lines of: “Look here! The backside of water!”

One of the reasons Disney fans are so hyped for Jungle Cruise is because the trailer has already featured Johnson recreating this beloved moment from the ride. In fact, the preview even teases a full sequence that pays homage to many staples from the attraction. True to the experience of the Jungle Cruise ride, Johnson’s character notes, "Of all the jungle cruises you could take in the Amazon, this is undoubtedly the cheapest, but also the most thrilling."

Still, the movie’s biggest tribute to Disneyland history was originally planned to be its release date, around the time of the park’s 65th anniversary. The coronavirus pandemic has seemingly impacted every facet of Disney resorts, even the movie adaptations of the rides. In the midst of an evolution within both theme parks and cinemas, two industries that Disney’s presence has loomed large in for decades, the House of Mouse is likely to lean on reminiscing about its past more than ever. With ties to the parks and movie theaters, it appears Jungle Cruise has come to embody the heart and soul of the Disney experience.

The 10 Most Linear Action Movies, Ranked

10 'game of thrones' episodes that are perfect from start to finish, thanks to max, you can finally watch one of the best dramas of the last 10 years.

From director Jaume Collet-Serra , the epic adventure Jungle Cruise is inspired by the classic Disney theme park attraction and follows wisecracking skipper and pun-lover Frank Wollf ( Dwayne Johnson ), as he makes his way down the Amazon with resourceful researcher Dr. Lily Houghton ( Emily Blunt ) and her brother MacGregor ( Jack Whitehall ), a proper English gentleman who is definitely not cut out for such a journey. In search of an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities, their quest brings them face-to-face with numerous dangers as well as supernatural forces, who would brave the wild animals lurking in the rainforest to vanquish the heroes and get there first.

At a virtual press conference to discuss the new film, co-stars Johnson, Blunt, Whitehall and Edgar Ramirez (who plays Conquistador Captain Aguirre) spoke to various members of the media about seeing the potential in this story inspired by a Disney Parks ride, their own experiences with the attraction, getting to improvise, the most challenging action sequences, making sure all of the characters had fully realized backstories, and how this is a movie about love.

Question: Dwayne, when you first got this project, were you immediately on board?

DWAYNE JOHNSON: The script was in a really good place and I immediately saw the potential of the opportunity to take a beloved and iconic Disney ride, there since 1955 when the park opened. This was Walt Disney’s baby. And there were a lot of elements that I felt comfortable with saying, “Yes, I will come on board. I’ll partner with you guys and we’ll develop this thing.” We got it to a really great place. And then, the next step after finding our director, Jaume [Collet-Serra], was finding my co-star, Emily [Blunt], the female Indiana Jones.

EMILY BLUNT: You set me up with too much pressure.

What was it about the Jungle Cruise that spoke to you? Did you have nostalgia for the attraction?

JOHNSON: I had ridden the ride, when I was a kid. Many moons later, I went to Disney World for the first time and road the ride there as well. It had a nostalgic element to it, when it was first presented to me, but it was also the opportunity that we had to create something that was hopefully unique and special. You hope to get lucky in your career and have an opportunity like this, where you can make a movie that’s based off an iconic ride that’s beloved with the most trusted brand in the world, when it comes to family and delivering entertainment for families. There were a lot of those elements that really spoke to me, and it started with the script and our director. He’s a romantic and a world builder. We wrapped this movie in 2018. Since then, Jaume has edited and cut this movie, and he’s made Black Adam as well. We feel like he’s Hollywood’s best kept secret. We have him locked up for the next 20 years.

Had the rest of you been on the Jungle Cruise ride?

BLUNT: I only rode the Jungle Cruise ride at the premiere, for the first time. I loved it. I thought it was very whimsical and sweet, and I could see the elements from the ride that have made it into the film.

JOHNSON: The charm of the ride is the simplicity and the silliness of it, and the calmness of it too. There’s so much to do in the Disney Parks, and then you get on this ride and it’s almost like you can exhale and really just enjoy the simplicity of the ride.

JACK WHITEHALL: Yeah, the element to the Jungle Cruise ride that I liked the most is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that is definitely something that we brought over into the movie. It has such ambition and scale, it’s beautiful, the sets are incredible, and it’s got all of the set pieces and the action. At the heart of it, it’s not a movie that takes itself too seriously. It has wit and humor. It’s got some of the best puns I’ve ever heard. It’s got Dwayne Johnson doing a stand-up comedy routine. What’s not to love about that?

EDGAR RAMIREZ: I also did the ride for the first time [at the premiere]. I saw the movie for the first time, and then went on the ride with my family and some of my closest friends. I loved it for the same reasons. It was simple, it was cute, it was tender, and it was silly. The backside of water is gonna stay with me forever. I can see why it’s become so iconic, for so many generations. The movie took it to the next level and included that delicious silliness that is so refreshing. In life, we need that.

Jack, you had one line in Frozen that might have even been cut out of the movie.

WHITEHALL: It may have been cut out, yes.

But now, you’re the one-line wonder in this film.

WHITEHALL: Post the Frozen experience of having my one line cut, I felt like this was just a case of throwing enough stuff at the wall and something sticking. I was just desperate to not be cut from it completely. The fact that there’s even a single line is an improvement on the Frozen debacle, so I’m excited to actually be a speaking part in a Disney film.

Was there a lot of improvisation?

WHITEHALL: There was a fair amount of improv. The script was amazing, but then we were also given the space to improvise and add stuff to it. [Dwayne and Emily] created this environment where we were able to do that and it felt like such a safe space. But there were probably a few jokes that ended up on the cutting room floor, for the right reasons. Some of the great moments that you see in the film are genuine moments that we came up with in the moment, and Jaume was so good at encouraging that as well.

It sounds like you could have a whole other film of alternate jokes.

WHITEHALL: That is not PG-13.

BLUNT: It would be very red band, especially involving pulling the sword out of Dwayne.

JOHNSON: The innuendo . . .

BLUNT: . . . was appalling.

Edgar, what was it like seeing your look in the film, for the first time?

RAMIREZ: I was very happy. I was also very happy that those snakes weren’t anywhere near me during the shoot. I’m super afraid of snakes, and we encountered some when we were shooting in Atlanta. We shot in real locations and we dressed them to look like the Amazon. It was incredible. I come from an Amazonian country. And I was so happy when I saw the [finished] film. To be in a movie that is based on the most iconic attraction from the most iconic entertainment universe in history is special.

Emily and Dwayne, there are so many great action sequences in this. Which one was the most difficult for you to do?

BLUNT: The rope swing. The vine swing. For me, that was the most challenging because [Dwayne] would not let me get one straight take in. He pushed it so far, every time, trying to make me laugh on that vine swing. We shot that all day, and we didn’t get one straight one. I was like, “Just tell me what you’re gonna say this time, so that I can be prepared,” and every time, he’d throw in some awful improv that would make me laugh. I don’t even know how many times we must have shot that.

JOHNSON: For me, personally, the action with the Conquistadors – with Edgar and his partners – was pretty challenging. They were dressed in their costumes and they’re also men who can’t die, so they fight in a different way. There’s a different energy.

Emily, do you feel closer to Mary Poppins or Lily Houghton?

BLUNT: Probably a little closer to Lily. I feel like Lily’s more of a mess. Poppins is so pulled together and perfect, and I don’t feel I walk through life that way, so I’d say Lily. I’m a train wreck.

Edgar, how does it feel to be a Disney villain and represent Latin America in such a cinematic experience?

RAMIREZ: Is he a villain? He’s misunderstood. It comes from pain. I feel for him.

WHITEHALL: I’d be pretty angry, if I had a load of snakes in my face all the time.

RAMIREZ: Exactly. But it feels incredible. Aguirre is a great, beautiful character to play. He’s complex. It’s very special to be in a movie like this and to play this character. What I love about the movie in general is that it has so many beautiful and great characters that allow you to go on a journey. What I love about the Conquistadors, and Aguirre specifically, is that it really puts you in a journey into the past, and that is beautiful. You have all of these fantastical elements, which is what I go to the movies for. I want to be on a journey. I want to be disconnected from reality and be able to dream of fantastical places and fantastical characters and creatures, so I’m very happy. The fact that I’m Latin America and this is such a diverse cast, we have people from all over the world. It’s a beautiful reflection of the world that we’re living in.

Jack and Dwayne, how important was it for you guys to get the scene right, when MacGregor comes out?

JOHNSON: I felt that the scene was really exactly what it should be, which was two men talking about what they loved and who they loved. It was as simple as that, and we were sharing a drink.

WHITEHALL: Yeah, I think it was a scene that we really wanted to get right. What’s so great about this movie is that all of the characters feel so fleshed out. All of them have interesting backstories and are fully realized. In a lot of movies of this kind of genre, you sometimes have characters that are a little bit two-dimensional. I think it’s so great that we get to understand so much about each of these characters, and they all have reasons for being where they are, with interesting and rich, textured backstories. It makes you invested in them, it makes you care about them, and it makes you really go on that journey with them.

Emily, how rewarding has it been to see the final product of all of this?

BLUNT: It has been immensely rewarding. We just needed to strike a chord that was really well-crafted and curated with so much love, and that was made in the spirit of the films that we all grew up watching. I mainlined those movies into my veins. I just loved Indiana Jones , Romancing the Stone and African Queen . They are just joy bombs. They’re nostalgic. We just needed to pierce people’s hearts directly with the spirit of those films that we all loved as children, and that took a lot of tempering and beautiful conducting from Jaume, who was extraordinarily free-spirited with us, in this massive spectacle of a movie. He’s such a world builder, which you need for these adventure movies. When I first met Jaume, I asked him, “What do you feel this movie’s about?” I always ask a filmmaker that before I’m about to sign on because I wanna know what it’s all about. And he said, “You know, it’s about love.” It was so perfect because he could’ve talked about the action, the spectacle, the myths and the legends, and all of that. That’s what you need for this type of movie.

'Jungle Cruise'

Of all the longtime favorite rides of the Disneyland theme parks, the Jungle Cruise , introduced in 1955, is among the most enduringly captivating. Sailing on a 1930s British steamer down the major rivers of Southeast Asia, Africa and South America through lush vegetation, accompanied by a skipper with a weakness for bad puns while Audio-Animatronic animals pop up in the waterways or on the riverbanks, the quaint Adventureland attraction is the very definition of transporting. Those central elements survive in Disney’s big-screen offshoot, though just barely, given the writers’ assiduous efforts to drown them in overplotting.

Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra is usually found putting Liam Neeson through his B-movie action-man paces, or, more memorably, pitting Blake Lively against a pesky shark in The Shallows . But family-friendly humor isn’t quite his strong point, and the absence of a light touch here means that even the teasing banter and sexual tension between appealing leads Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt is a bit stiff. By the time they start wrestling with 400-year-old undead conquistadors and an evil spawn of the German kaiser who navigates the Amazon in a submarine, you probably won’t much care if they find the elusive object of their expedition, let alone seal it with a kiss.

Everything about Jungle Cruise points not to creative inspiration in spinning a feature property out of the ride, but to corporate bean counters enthusing, “Hey, it worked for Pirates of the Caribbean !” Following that template to a fault, the project has been in the works for more than 15 years, originally slated to shoot in 2005 for a 2006 release date. Since then, the script has passed through many hands before being taken up by Michael Green (who co-wrote the terrific Wolverine farewell, Logan , and penned Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie remakes) with Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

Though kids are the target demographic, anyone older is likely to spend a lot of time thinking about the superior films being ransacked here for ideas, among them Raiders of the Lost Ark , Romancing the Stone and The African Queen . But the Disney brand and the Rock factor should ensure a sizable audience.

The problem of a numbingly overcomplicated storyline is apparent from the 10-minute pre-title sequence. Hurried narration explains that a single petal from a great tree deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle — known as the Tears of the Moon — can cure any illness or break any curse. Countless explorers over the centuries have attempted to find it and harness its powers, including Spanish conquistadors led by Aguirre (Edgar Ramirez), who betrayed the indigenous guardians of the tree who rescued his expedition’s men from the jungle’s menace. With his dying breath, the native chief cursed them to remain eternally within sight of the river, unable to leave or die.

Cut to London in 1916, two years into World War I. Blunt’s Lily Houghton, a female Indiana Jones fully equipped with pith helmet and safari gear, infiltrates the chambers of a science society to steal a recently recovered arrowhead believed to be the key to finding the Tears of the Moon. As a decoy, her brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) presents her theories about the unparalleled healing powers of the mysterious tree, which could revolutionize modern medicine and greatly aid the war effort.

While the starchy boys’ club membership is rejecting their request for support, Lily is behind the scenes in a slapsticky scuffle with nefarious Prince Joachim of Germany ( Jesse Plemons , with a chewy accent) for possession of the arrowhead, which culminates with her dangling over Piccadilly Circus on a precariously suspended ladder. By the time Lily and fussbudget toff MacGregor reach the Brazilian port that will be their embarkation point, I was already growing restless.

The situation improves once Johnson shows up as Frank Wolff, who runs what he calls the best and cheapest river cruise on the Amazon on his beat-up boat. He’s an affable rascal, in cahoots with crafty female tribal chief Trader Sam (Veronica Falcón) to give the tourists an alarming thrill as part of a ride that includes rigged animal appearances. The enjoyable sequence that introduces Frank deftly tethers the film to its Adventureland roots and would have made a far more engaging opening.

There’s a bunch of superfluous business with Nilo Nemolato (Paul Giamatti, with another shticky accent, plus a cockatoo), the commercial rival to whom he owes a bunch of money. But Lily is soon scammed into engaging Frank’s services, and they set off upriver on what could generously be called a rollicking, fantastical riff on Heart of Darkness . Some early humor comes from MacGregor packing like Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes , with trunk after trunk of toiletries and apparel for every occasion, most of which Frank tosses overboard. Meanwhile, Lily’s radical-for-the-era choice of pants is repeatedly emphasized to establish her feminist bona fides.

Frank repeatedly exaggerates the dangers ahead — and fabricates some scares — to encourage Lily to turn back. But the feisty explorer remains determined, even when they face treacherous rapids. As they search for the sacred tree, Prince Joachim does everything possible to blow them out of the water, first with weaponry and then by setting loose the reanimated conquistadors. (The German’s supernatural communication powers are never quite explained.) The pointed detail that the otherwise fearless Lily can’t swim makes it no surprise when she is forced to lead a daring underwater maneuver, which at the same time ups the romantic ante with Frank.

The climactic action — including revelations about Frank’s history — is so convoluted that many audiences will be checking out, especially as the movie careens toward the two-hour mark. That applies both to the unlocking of the Tears of the Moon mystery and to the inevitable battle with Aguirre and Joachim, even if the screenwriters’ bid to infuse a sense of the mythic elevates the story slightly above the generally juvenile level.

Like Plemons and Giamatti, Ramirez is another talented actor squandered in a thankless part. There’s none of the hammy fun of his Pirates counterpart, played by Geoffrey Rush. The jungle and its creatures have ravaged the conquistadors’ bodies, suspending them between life and death, so Ramirez is rendered unrecognizable by CG excesses that transform him into a mass of writhing snakes. One of his comrades (Dani Rovira) is the spirit of the beehive — in what’s almost certainly not an homage to the classic Victor Erice film.

Blunt and Johnson at least keep it watchable, and Frank’s groan-inducing jokes are fun enough. Sample: “We’re headed into headhunter territory, which is a terrible place to be headed.” Both Frank and Lily are well-drawn characters, and their opposites-attract chemistry is serviceable in that sexless Disney way. But there’s no larger-than-life persona along the lines of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow to galvanize the frantic action. And while Collet-Serra handles the accelerating physical mayhem efficiently, he lacks the joyous verve and inventiveness, the controlled chaos that Gore Verbinski brought to his movies in the Pirates franchise.

The novelty here, already widely commented on while the film was in production, is Disney’s first openly gay character, MacGregor. Leaving aside the outcry over the casting of an actor who identifies as heterosexual, Brit comedian Whitehall is a likable presence, even if his posh blathering makes him more of a familiar type than a distinctive character. MacGregor’s account to Frank of his bumpy family history, being disinherited after refusing various suitable marriage opportunities because his interest lay “elsewhere,” is played unambiguously. But his gradual transformation from stuffed shirt into plucky adventurer is strictly by-the-numbers.

Jungle Cruise is a typically well-upholstered Disney package, shot by Flavio Labiano with vibrancy and lots of swooping camerawork in the action scenes. (Hawaiian locations stand in for the Amazon rainforest.) It’s handsomely appointed with period trappings by production designer Jean-Vincent Puzos and costume designer Paco Delgado, and wrapped up in a boisterous orchestral score by James Newton Howard — although an interlude of crunchy electric guitars is a little mystifying. The CG creatures, notably a jaguar named Proxima, are the usual mixed bag of artificial-looking photorealism, though young audiences seldom seem to mind.

If only the core charms that have given the Disneyland ride such longevity weren’t so smothered by overstuffed plot. Compared to other attempts to turn theme park attractions into fresh revenue streams, it’s not as lifeless as The Haunted Mansion or Tomorrowland . But that doesn’t mean it’s good.

Jungle Cruise Dwayne Johnson Emily Blunt

‘Jungle Cruise’ film review: a classic summer blockbuster souped up for the modern age

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are the perfect pair to lead this rollercoaster of maximalist adventure

R emember what blockbusters were like before Marvel ? When heroes flew biplanes instead of supersuits? When baddies shot revolvers instead of magic finger sparks? If you grew up with swashbucklers like Raiders Of The Lost Ark , Romancing The Stone or The Mummy you’ll find so much to love in Jungle Cruise – a rollicking summer holiday classic with an old soul and a messy modern edge.

Picking up the slack left by whatever happened to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise (*cough* Johnny Depp *cough*), Disney ’s latest ride-to-film adaption follows almost the exact same formula as 2003’s Curse Of The Black Pearl – mixing up old-fashioned matinee charm with a whole lot of supernatural CG schlock.

If you haven’t been on the original ride at Disneyland you haven’t got much catching up to do. As old as the first park itself, Disney’s 1955 river outing is a slow colonial cruise that floats guests past a handful of quaint animatronic jungle scenes (squirting elephants, snapping crocodiles and racist stereotypes) while a real-life “skipper” narrates everything with an ad-libbed script of intentionally bad animal puns. Is that enough to hang a movie off? Of course not. But throw in a few mad German submarine captains, an army of zombie conquistadors made out of bees, and a bizarrely out of place Metallica track and you’ve got yourself a modern maximalist blockbuster wearing handsome old-timey threads.

Here the skipper is Dwayne Johnson – jaded steamboat captain Frank Wolff – who reluctantly agrees to drive plucky English scientist Dr Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and her posh brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) up the Amazon in 1917 to find a glowy flower MacGuffin that has something to do with ancient curses and eternal life. The plot gets thicker when Prince Joachim (Jesse Plemmons) joins the chase in a giant U-boat, and thicker still when magic moon water reanimates a vengeful gang of dead 16th Century Spanish zombies led by Édgar Ramírez’s “Aguirre” (always good to find a Werner Herzog in-joke buried in a Disney film…).

Jungle Cruise Jack Whitehall Emily Blunt

If the plot sounds messy, everything else in Jungle Cruise stays satisfyingly clean-cut – starting with the perfect pairing of Johnson and Blunt. Doing his best to squeeze into the mould of classic Hollywood heroes like Humphrey Bogart and Harrison Ford, Johnson finds a role that fits his star power perfectly (despite looking more like he’s got protein shake in his hipflask instead of whiskey). Better still, Blunt stands even taller – delivering twice the sass and punching just as many snakes/cannibals/zombies to give us a new hero that’s somewhere between Indiana Jones and Katherine Hepburn.

And then there’s Whitehall’s endearingly annoying fop (managing to handle one of Disney’s most high-profile gay characters with real sensitivity); Plemmons’ deranged German cartoon stiff; a pet CG jaguar who understands English; and a raft of big, exciting action scenes that play like grand theme park stunt shows. There’s so much packed into Jungle Cruise that it’s easy to get lost in – and a bizarre late twist threatens to capsize an already well overladen boat – but director Jaume Collet-Serra ( Unknown , Run All Night , The Shallows ) mostly keeps things grounded in such a fine old spirit of adventure that it’s impossible not to enjoy the ride.

Recommended

Glowing with golden-age romance and buzzing with Marvel-age pizzazz, Jungle Cruise is everything summer blockbusters used to be and a whole lot they never were. Is this the start of a whole new Pirates -style franchise? Let’s hope so.

  • Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall
  • Release date: July 30 (in UK cinemas)

Star Wars Theory Reveals The Real Reason Darth Vader Died In Return Of The Jedi (Not Palpatine)

Which type of star wars stormtrooper would you be, based on your zodiac sign, sigourney weaver confirms she will make her star wars debut in the mandalorian & grogu movie.

Disney's   Jungle Cruise  movie is coming soon and here's everything we know about it, including its release date, cast, and more.  Jungle Cruise  has been years in the making. Back in 2011, it was believed  Toy Story  super duo Tim Allen and Tom Hanks would star  before exiting the project. Somewhere along the way, the Allen-Hanks version of  Jungle Cruise  was scrapped and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's casting ushered in the need for a new script, cast, and everything in between.

What has always remained the same for Disney's Jungle Cruise movie is the intention to create another massive adventure film similar to the  Pirates of the Caribbean   franchise, which is based on another Disney Parks ride. So basing a movie on the Disney  Jungle Cruise ride, which has been in operation since the 1950s, makes perfect sense from a business perspective. A jungle setting offers a variety of adventuring possibilities - all it takes is the right cast, director, and story to help bring it to life.

Here's everything we know about Disney's  Jungle Cruise  movie so far, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt , among others, and releases in summer 2021. This comes after Coronavirus delayed the film an entire year from summer 2020.

Jungle Cruise Release Date

Jungle Cruise  releases on July 30, 2021, both in theaters and on Disney+ Premiere Access. Settling on an exact release date has been tricky for the film, as it had jumped around Disney's schedule several times before being slated for a summer 2021 release, even prior to the Coronavirus pandemic. Previously,  Jungle Cruise  had been scheduled for release on October 11, 2019, than was pushed back to July 24, 2020. The July 30 date was settled on after it became clear that theaters wouldn't be back to business as usual during summer 2020.

Jungle Cruise 's release date delay made sense though, even if theaters had opened back up sooner than they ultimately did, as the film seems like a natural summer blockbuster . Plus, releasing it at an earlier time, when consumers were more wary of going to theaters, would've been a disservice to its potential. A big adventure set in the jungle with two notable box office draws - Johnson and Blunt - and based on a popular Disney ride feels tailor-made for the summer movie-going season. Summer has always been good to Johnson as well, who has seen past films - Skyscraper , Baywatch , Central Intelligence  -  have successful summer openings.

Jungle Cruise Cast

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt lead the  Jungle Cruise  cast, but they aren't the only big names in the film. In addition to Johnson and Blunt, the  Jungle Cruise  cast includes Jack Whitehall, Paul Giamatti, Edgar Ramirez, and Jesse Plemons. Johnson plays Frank Wolff, a cynical but ultimately heroic riverboat captain.   Blunt plays Lily Houghton, an adventurous scientist that enlists Frank to ferry her into the jungle, with Whitehall starring as her brother, McGregor Houghton.

Back in August 2018, it was revealed Whitehall's character would be openly gay in the film but the news received backlash when his character was described as " hugely effete, very camp ." Concerns were voiced from the public, as discontent over a straight man playing a stereotyped depiction of gayness, rather than an honest one, was greenlit by a studio that has historically avoided openly LGBTQ characters. As for the rest of the cast, Giamatti plays Nilo Nemolato, the rough around the edges harbormaster at the port where Frank docks his boat. Jungle Cruise will have two villains: its main antagonist is Jesse Plemons' Prince Joachim, a German aristocrat who finances an expedition looking for the same fabled item as Lily, while the secondary villain is Edgar Ramirez's Aguirre, a mercenary who leads Joachim's operation.

Jaume Collet-Serra directs  Jungle Cruise . This is Collet-Serra's first time working on a Disney film as well as his first time working with Johnson (they'll re-team for DC's  Black Adam ) and Blunt. Collet-Serra's specialty as a director has been in delivering tense, action-packed feature-length films to the masses. Since his 2005 directorial debut, a remake of the horror classic  House of Wax , Collet-Serra has gone on to direct  Orphan , Run All Night ,  Non-Stop ,  The Shallows , and  The Commuter . If there is one director working today who understands how to blend drama and action together into something as fantastic as it is rooted in reality, it's Collet-Serra, which should signal to prospective audiences  Jungle Cruise  is going to be a thrill-ride.

Jungle Cruise Story Details

Jungle Cruise  has been likened to a Pirates of the Caribbean  movie and an Indiana Jones   movie at various points, and it's not hard to see why. Jungle Cruise  takes place in the early 20th century. The story follows riverboat captain Frank Wolff (Johnson), as he takes Lily and McGregor Houghton (Blunt and Whitehall) through the jungle to the location where it's believed the Tree of Life, which possesses incredible healing properties, still stands.

Frank, Lily, and McGregor won't be the only ones in pursuit of the Tree of Life, which will lead their small team on a series of twists and turns to make their way to the fabled destination, as they'll also be competing with the members of a rival expedition headed by Ramirez and Plemons' characters. Of course, based on the marketing, Frank and Lily will likely spend quite a bit of the movie trying to work together despite their opposite personalities, a common trope for this type of adventure story. Although it can be assumed that they'll bond over the course of their fight for survival, and maybe even fall for each other.

Jungle Cruise Trailers & Poster

On October 11, 2019, the first full trailer and official poster for Jungle Cruise were released, promising a good time to anyone looking for some action and adventure, and possibly even some romance, judging by the interplay between Johnson and Blunt's characters. In March 2020, a second trailer arrived, with the third and final trailer - oddly called trailer 2 by Disney - being released in May 2021. All the trailers can be seen above, along with the latest official poster, and it's not hard to get both Indiana Jones and The Mummy franchise vibes off Jungle Cruise 's footage so far, as well as of course Pirates of the Caribbean . Then again, if one's going to borrow, it's best to borrow from movies most people loved.

jungle cruise 1955 movie cast

Dwayne Johnson as Frank Wolff

Johnson needs no introduction. He has been a part of the industry since the 90s and has emerged as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. Born on May 2, 1972, Johnson started his professional career as a wrestler with the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) and was known by his ring name ‘The Rock’. The professional wrestler garnered a lot of fame through wrestling and eventually took up acting as a profession. He made his acting debut in 1999 by making cameo appearances in projects such as ‘That 70s Show’ and ‘Beyond the Mat’. His first major role came in ‘The Mummy Returns’ where he played The Scorpion King. However, it would take him years to be recognized for his work and became an extraordinary actor.

It was the 2011 movie ‘Fast Five’ which would give him the much-needed success. Since then, he has worked on various projects and become a superstar. Films like ‘San Andreas’, ‘Rampage’, ‘Moana’, ‘Central Intelligence’, ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ received acclaim from around the world and Johnson’s presence in the movie was one of the reasons for that. The superstar will be next seen in ‘Red Notice’ along with Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. He will also be playing the role of Black Adam in the movie of the same name from DC and WB.

Emily Blunt as Dr Lily Houghton

Born on February 23, 1983, Emily Blunt is one of the most talented actresses in the world right now and has given many award-worthy performances in her career. In November 2001, Blunt made her professional debut in Peter Hall's production of the play ‘The Royal Family’, in which she played the role of Gwen.

She won the Best Action Movie Actress for her role in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and received numerous nominations for ventures such as ‘Sicario’, ‘The Girl on the Train’, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ and ‘A Quiet Place’.

Jack Whitehall as McGregor Houghton

Whitehall started his acting career at the tender age of 9 and appeared on the TV show ‘Noah’s Ark’. However, as he got older, he got really attracted to stand-up comedy and went on to pursue a career in it. Whitehall started stand-up comedy performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at the Pleasance Theatre's Comedy Reserve showcase.

The comedian appeared on several comedy specials over the initial years and also took up acting. In 2013, he voiced the character of Gothi in ‘Frozen’. Meanwhile, in 2015, he acted and co-wrote ‘The Bad Education Movie’. The film received positive reviews and Whitehall was praised for his acting. He has been awarded the King of Comedy accolade at the British Comedy Awards on three separate occasions (2012, 2013, and 2014).

Jesse Plemons as Prince Joachim

Born on April 2, 1988, Jesse Plemons began his career as a child actor and appeared in a Coca-Cola advertisement when he was just 3 and half years of age. When he was 8 years old, he started doing extra work, and with the support of his family, spent time auditioning in Los Angeles and landing small jobs. In 2006, when he was 18, Plemons joined the ensemble cast of NBC's ‘Friday Night Lights’. The actor garnered a lot of prominence after his stint on the show and started getting better roles. From 2012 to 2013, Plemons portrayed the psychopathic villain Todd Alquist during the final season of ‘Breaking Bad’.  Plemons also played mobster Kevin Weeks in the Boston-set mob film ‘Black Mass’, starring Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch in pivotal roles. Meanwhile, in 2015, he starred in the acclaimed TV series ‘Fargo’ and received a Primetime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie category.

The Story Behind How Disneyland's Serious Jungle Cruise Ride Became Filled With Puns

Disneyland's Jungle Cruise is known for its corny jokes, but the opening day attraction was once a very different ride.

Disneyland jungle cruise

Disneyland ’s Jungle Cruise is one of its most iconic attractions. It was there on that July day in 1955 when the park opened , and it’s still there today. Many might be of the opinion that barring the occasional refurbishment and update the Jungle Cruise has received , the ride is largely the same as it was when it first opened, but that’s not actually true. While the basic concept, of floating down the exotic rivers of the world has remained unchanged, the tone of the Jungle Cruise is very different now than it was at the beginning.

Today, people know Jungle Cruise as the funny ride where Cast Member Skippers fire puns and one-liners off at guests one after the other. They might not all be winners, some are groan-worthy, but jokes and the Jungle Cruise have been inseparable for decades. That said, they weren’t always part of the ride. The Jungle Cruise was originally presented as a serious ride with the presentation closer to that of a documentary than a Disney cartoon.

Disneyland’s True Life Adventureland

Jungle Cruise is often celebrated by fans, alongside the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean , as one of the most popular Disneyland rides that have a story and concept that are entirely original, not based on a Disney movie. But in the case of Jungle Cruise, that’s not entirely accurate, as there is a Disney movie, in fact, an entire series of Disney movies, that inspired Jungle Cruise and all of Adventureland.

While lesser known today, one of Walt Disney ’s first forays into live-action filmmaking was through a series of short and long-form documentary films known as the True Life Adventures. These films combine wildlife photography with some sort of fictionalized story that allowed Disney to bring his unique form of storytelling to the natural world. These were incredibly successful, netting Walt Disney nearly half of the 26 Oscars he won in his life.

This was where the entire concept behind Disneyland’s Adventureland was born, and it was what Jungle Cruise was supposed to recreate. Walt originally wanted the Jungle Cruise to be full of actual animals, not animatronics, before it was determined that animal sleep schedules and general welfare would not be conducive to the confines of an attraction (Disney would need the massive scale of Walt Disney World in order to create Disney’s Animal Kingdom and make this particular dream of Walt’s come true.)

So while the animals would not be real, the presentation was originally designed to be just that. Skippers were originally designed to educate the riders as much as to entertain them. There was the occasional joke and the presentation wasn’t entirely stiff, but humor wasn’t the focus.

Imagineer Marc Davis Brings Humor To The Jungle Cruise

The Jungle Cruise was a big hit when the park opened in 1955. For a theme park that wouldn’t open a roller coaster for four years, it was the E-ticket attraction before the park actually had E-ticket attractions. However, the story goes that Walt Disney overheard guests saying that they had no interest in re-riding Jungle Cruise because they’d done it before. The attraction would see incremental improvements throughout the 1950s, but it was a major overhaul in the early 1960s that had the most to do with the Jungle Cruise becoming the attraction it is today.

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

Marc Davis would be the man put in charge of designing the overhaul, and with it, we would see the first scenes of a distinctly comedic bent on Jungle Cruise. Walt reportedly wanted to add humor to the ride, which is specifically why Davis was chosen.

Davis was part of the Imagineering team that had been working on the nearby New Orleans Square attractions around the same period. Davis is credited as being one of the key people behind the decision to add humor to the Haunted Mansion , and he also designed several of the more lighthearted moments in Pirates of the Caribbean.

A new scene showing elephants in a bathing pool would be added in 1962. A sequence where a rhinoceros has chased several people up a tree would follow in 1963. These added a much-needed bit of humor, in Davis’ opinion, to the Jungle Cruise.

There was never a moment when the Jungle Cruise narration transitioned overnight from serious to funny. That change appears to have happened gradually over time, seemingly due to the Cast Members themselves changing up the spiel. Having said that, the fact that the Jungle Cruise narration needed to be more humorous due to the funnier parts of the ride certainly appears to have influenced the Skippers into fashioning more jokes.

The Modern Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise Cast Members aren't generally seen as "performers" in the way that those singing and dancing on stage are, but for a few minutes at a time, the spotlight is certainly on them. The Skippers' comedy has become so well known that's an oft-repeated myth that Steve Martin got his start in comedy performing as a Skipper. It's not actually true, as Martin worked in the magic shop.

Today, there are so many jokes that it’s impossible to hear them all in one trip, giving Jungle Cruise much of the re-rideability that Walt Disney wanted. Skippers are basically given a list of jokes they can use, but have the freedom within that list to say what they want, so each ride is something a little different.

The Jungle Cruise has continued to see regular updates, with the most recent Jungle Cruise refurbishment removing some of the attraction elements that haven't aged as well as others since the 1950s and '60s. We can expect changes to the ride to continue over time, but the attraction's focus as one of the more humorous parts of Disneyland seems all but assured to continue.

The jokes on Jungle Cruise are intentionally terrible, which, for many, makes them even funnier. Still, not everybody appreciates the humor. Emily Blunt apparently didn't love having to hear Dwayne Johnson deliver endless puns on the set of the Jungle Cruise movie . For others, however, the jokes are what keeps them coming back.
