Nairobi won the honour at the 29th annual edition held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC). The Kenyan capital took this award based on its outstanding infrastructure, contemporary hotels, a high standard of living, and enhanced social services.

How Do You Get Nominated for World Travel Awards?

The world travel awards 2022 winners went through a rigourous nomination procedure – as is the case with all others in future. Entities that wish to be considered in the awards fill an online entry form submission.

Your submission is then examined and verified to make sure it is eligible for the chosen award(s). Those who qualify are then informed and given an invoice for the entry price.

A fee is never charged for rejected applications. The previous year’s winner and the two runners-up automatically requalify for the same prize and are exempt from submitting an entry.

This is officially the world’s best tourist destination in 2022

From entire countries to city breaks, these destinations triumphed at this year’s World Travel Awards

The World Travel Awards are a bit like the Oscars of the travel industry – only they’re a bit less exclusive. Both travel industry pros and the general public get to vote for the world’s finest destinations, from cities to hotels, before the victors are crowned at a glamourous annual ceremony.

If you’re thinking that you might’ve seen quite a lot about the WTAs over the past few weeks, well, that’s because you may well have done. The WTAs have recently gone through the continents, revealing the best destinations in regions such as Europe ( find out more here ) and the Middle East ( more here ).

But this one’s the big cheese. This time the WTAs have revealed the best destinations in the entire world .

And top spot went to... the Maldives , which took home the title of the ‘World’s Leading Destination’. At a ceremony in Muscat , Oman, the island country also took the title of ‘World’s Leading Tourist Board’.

So where else did well at this year’s global WTAs? Well, Vietnam took home a whopping five prizes, including ‘World’s Leading Heritage Destination’ (which went to the country as a whole), ‘World’s Leading City Break Destination’ ( Hanoi ), ‘World's Leading Nature Island Destination’ (Phu Quoc), ‘World's Leading Town Destination’ (Tam Đảo) and ‘World's Leading Regional Nature Destination’ (Moc Chau).

Jamaica also did really well in this year’s WTAs. The Caribbean nation won ‘World’s Leading Cruise Destination’, World’s Leading Family Destination’ and ‘World’s Leading Wedding Destination’. Not bad, eh?

How can readers nominate a company or destination for the World's Best Awards?

Nominations for the 2025 World's Best Awards will open in early October.

What categories are included in the survey?

Readers can rate airlines, airports, car-rental companies, cities, cruise ships, destination spas, hotels, hotel brands, islands, luxury villa rental companies, tour operators, trains, safari outfitters, and U.S. national parks. The ratings for cruise ships are combined to generate scores for cruise lines. For more details about how the voting works, you can read the survey methodology .

Can respondents vote more than once for a company, destination, or property?

We allow each survey respondent to vote only once for each candidate. Duplicate votes are eliminated from the results.

What does it mean for something to be a WBA Hall of Fame honoree?

A Hall of Fame designation means that the business or destination has been voted onto a specific World's Best Awards list for the past 10 years (consecutive).

How do you prevent cheating?

The World's Best Awards survey is maintained and monitored through a secure website by digital marketing firm Proof Insights. T+L and Proof Insights use automated and manual strategies to prevent and correct fraud.

Are World's Best Awards candidates allowed to promote the survey?

Yes, candidates can promote the World's Best Awards survey through email, social media, videos, room drops and any other type of creative outreach that abides by the promotional guidelines .

World Travel Awards: Scam Or Legit!

In some of the most respected awards such as the Oscars, you are not required to pay any fee for nomination. This is not the case with World Travel Awards. It is as though the awards do not seek to recognize the best agencies rather the agencies that are able to pay them at least £650. The world Travel awards nominations list is always short. This is not because they have shortlisted nominees but it is simply because those were the people who were willing to pay them £399 or £499 plus £299 for advertising.

In other words, World Travel Awards has presented itself as a brand that endorses Travel brands through receiving payments that accounted for as though they are nomination fees. If you are looking for the best agency in a given country, World Travel Awards would not be the place to find that company. This does not imply that they endorse fake companies rather they do not present you with all the best agencies a given destination has to offer.

Imagine if you had a competition such as the UEFA champions league but instead of featuring the top European teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool among other top teams, you instead feature teams in the Tercera Division, English Football League One, Serie C among other lowers divisions teams whose participation is on a non-merit based participation. This is exactly how World Travel Awards works; you are not guaranteed to find the best agencies rather mere agencies in the given category. Sometimes they feature reputable companies and other times; it is a total disappointment.

In conclusion, we cannot say World Travel Awards is a scam but even though it is not a scam, it should never be considered as a directory for the best companies in the whole world through their nomination list.

The  World Travel Awards  organizes an extensive programme each year that covers a wide range of awards, created to honour the industry’s most vital sectors and product offerings. These Awards are presented across three tiers: regional, country, and world awards.

• How Do You Get Nominated For World Travel Awards?

Those brands that are raising the bar of industry excellence and wish to be considered for the awards can submit their entry form online. 

Your entry will be then checked and verified to ensure your nomination qualifies for the chosen award(s). Selected applicants will be notified and sent an invoice for the entry fee. (Entry fees apply for successful applications: Country/Sub-region awards – £399 and Regional awards – £499). No fee for unsuccessful applications.

The Philippines aims to build on its recent success at the World Travel Awards (WTA) Asia and Oceania Gala Ceremony, where it secured multiple recognitions.

The country was honored as Asia’s Leading Beach Destination, Dive Destination and Island Destination during the Sept. 3, 2024 ceremony held in Manila.

Intramuros was recognized as Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction, while Boracay claimed the title of Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination. Cebu received the nod for Asia’s Leading Wedding Destination, and the “Love the Philippines” campaign was named Asia’s Leading Marketing Campaign. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco was also awarded the Transformational Leader Award in Tourism Governance.

The Philippines is now nominated for various categories in the upcoming 31st WTA, hoping to extend its winning streak on a global scale. These include World’s Leading Beach Destination, Dive Destination, Island Destination, City Destination (Manila), Wedding Destination (Cebu), Tourist Attraction (Intramuros), Marketing Campaign (“Love the Philippines”), and Tourist Board (Department of Tourism).

In the 2023 WTA, the Philippines clinched World’s Leading Beach Destination, Dive Destination, City Destination (Manila), and the inaugural Global Tourism Resilience Award.

“We are delighted to see the Philippines consistently earn its well-deserved spot on the global stage,” said Frasco. “These WTA nominations further highlight the breathtaking beauty and rich culture of our islands, reflecting the passion and dedication of the Filipino people. Each nomination is a celebration of our unique experiences, and we look forward to welcoming travelers to discover more of what there is to love in our country’s diverse regions.”

The private sector also made its mark this year, with several nominees showcasing the breadth of the Philippines’ tourism offerings. Notable contenders include Cebu Pacific (World’s Leading Long-Haul Low-Cost Airline), Savoy Hotel Manila (World’s Leading Airport Hotel), Discovery Primea (World’s Leading Business Hotel), City of Dreams Manila and Okada Manila (World’s Leading Casino Resort), and several others representing luxury hotels, resorts, and serviced apartments.

Established in 1993, the WTA is a prestigious awards program recognizing excellence in travel, tourism, and hospitality across all sectors. The Philippines has consistently earned recognition from the WTA, solidifying its position as a leading global destination.
