Arathusa Safari Lodge

Intimate & romantic Arathusa Safari Lodge has a well-earned reputation for delivering value-for-money Big 5 safaris in the legendary Sabi Sands Reserve.

Prime location and value for money go hand in hand at award-winning Arathusa Safari Lodge. Set adjoining the Kruger Park in the legendary Sabi Sands Private Reserve, Arathusa offers peerless Big 5 game viewing in an unspoilt and exclusive-use environment.

Thatched roofs lying under sprawling acacia trees give this lodge an unmistakable African ambience – especially when you sit on the viewing deck and watch elephants at the waterhole below. Privately owned and run, Arathusa is a small and intimate lodge. Although not overly luxurious, it boasts an indulgent safari spa and swimming pool. It is also a great choice for honeymooners and privacy-seeking couples: as well as waterhole-facing suites, Arathusa also offers more secluded accommodation complete with private plunge pool.

Sabi Sands is a destination most popular in the long dry winter when animals stay close to water. Arathusa has a healthy reputation for leopards with sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino almost guaranteed on a 2 or 3 day stay during this time. The summer rainy season brings a wealth of birdlife and new-born animals – great for photography as well as opportunities for predators. Accessible by air or road, Arathusa Safari Lodge makes a great combination with Cape Town or even as an add-on to a Botswana safari – ask us how.

Lodge Highlights:

  • Private Sabi Sands setting
  • Excellent Big 5 game viewing
  • Small & intimate, spa & private pools
  • Genuine value for money

The care by Walter was great from planning to leaving Johannesburg. The accommodations were perfectly chosen. If after a few days you thought it could not be better, you were told otherwise. It was an increase every day, with the 3 days safari in the Kruger, including overnight in tree house, the grand finale. I would book a trip anytime again at Safari Online.

They provide us the most taylored and customized honeymoon possible! everything was much better than we expected. We loved the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere and everyone made us feeling so incredibly special and gave us a unique insight. Over our game drives we managed to see all the big five plus some!!

Our extended family (16 travellers, including 8 children under ten years of age!) went on a wonderful safari adventure curated and organised by Walter Kohrs of Safari Online. It could not have been any better than we experienced. From our time in Cape Town, to visiting Victoria Falls, all the way through Zimbabwe and finally wrapping up at the amazing Chobe Safari Lodge, all the locations chosen by Walter were amazing.

His attention to detail, willingness to fine-tune and excellent responsiveness (over a period of several months!) could not have been better. He took time to visit us personally upon our arrival in South Africa, with lovely gift-packs and shared a wealth of advice, recommendations and tips. I cannot recommend Safari Online (and Walter Kohrs in particular) any higher. Absolutely amazing.

Attention to detail & service provided was first class, from our very first email to the last day of our trip. Walter went above and beyond to ensure that we were notified of any changes, even up to our last day with a change to our flight time, at short notice. The safari was so much more than expected, from the rustic to the exceptional, every camp was different in it’s own way and our highlights are hard to single out just one as each camp was great.

The communications and service from Walter was excellent, and we were continuously fully informed. The information package and book received on arrival were excellent. We felt that we had been allocated carefully selected lodges at each camp and every detail met or exceeded our expectations. The safari tour was wonderful, and a particular feature was the variety offered at each location which combined perfectly

We have booked at the Elephant Plains Lodge. We stayed there for a few nights and went on safaris. The lodge, the guide, the food and all the animals we have seen were fantastic. Really an outstanding experience. We can recommend Elephant Plains to everybody. Maybe you will not be as lucky as we were, becaucse we have seen the Big 5! But however you will not forget your stay at Elephant Plains.

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver. She responded to our requests promptly and gave us several options with links to each option; we ultimately chose Lukimbi. She then coordinated our flights to and from the property, arranged the drivers necessary to get us from the airport to the lodge and back again, and sent the appropriate paperwork to each of us to verify each step of the process. We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

In June/July 2016 we undertook a trip to Southern Africa to fulfill a lifelong intention. We stayed at six camps, safari style, and had a great time. All of our expectations were met or even exceeded. For example, we never expected to see honey badgers or sitatunga, given the secretive nature of those species, but we did! All travel arrangements and connections worked smoothly, which is astonishing since we had several dozen transfers and meeting points; all of the connecting personnel were prompt, professional, and welcoming.

I was already last year in South Africa and Zambia organized by Safari Online. It was a absolutely gorgeous trip. Everything was perfect. This was the reason I booked this year in May and June an new trip to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. I got everything I expected. It was a dream again. I know I´m coming back.

Though we live in Australia, Safari online made planning for our family holiday so easy. Walter understood our requirements and nothing was too much trouble. The holiday was everything we wanted it to be and so much more. Every camp was ideally suited for our family and we loved each day, every early morning and evening game drive. Thank you to Walter for his attention to detail and his friendly, professional and caring manner. It was a trip of a lifetime and one that we will talk about forever.

A little bit about Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Spanning 65,000 hectares, the Sabi Sands Nature Reserve is a testament to the vision of local landowners in the 1950s. It stands proudly adjacent to the globally acclaimed Kruger National Park, forming a vast wilderness teeming with wildlife.

The legacy of these founding families, now in their third and fourth generations of stewardship, resonates in the successful conservation of South Africa's richest density of big game. A unique feature of Sabi Sands is its 50-kilometer unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, creating a harmonious coexistence that allows wildlife to roam freely. This has led to remarkably close encounters with the local fauna, including prolific sightings of the elusive leopard. The dynamic landscape is further enriched by the Sabi and Sand Rivers, weaving their way through the reserve, enhancing the rich biodiversity of this extraordinary habitat.

The best way of getting an idea what the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is about is by seeing some incredible footage from the area. We went out with our video camera and spent a lot of time outdoors to get you some of the most beautiful shots of the reserve imaginable.

Visit our Sabi Sands videos overview page for more videos and get inspired for your Sabi Sands safari.

We were off road and moving with the animals or quietly sitting watching them playing or feasting....magical.
The staff went out of their way to make our wedding and honeymoon as special as it could ever be. We were blown away.
Great place for viewing big cats!

Detailed Description

Water-facing and bush-facing luxury suites.

There are nine (9) water-facing Luxury Suites within Arathusa’s main lodge perimeter, overlooking the waterhole. Each Suite is uniquely designed, with fresh interiors and a focus on light and space. Each Suite has a bathroom en-suite, with shower, as well as a private outdoor shower. Private verandahs overlook the waterhole, for full appreciation of Arathusa’s signature feature.

Arathusa has 4 bush-facing Luxury Suites which are remotely located, away from the lodge. Each of the bush-facing Luxury Suites has its own plunge pool and verandah, and affords guests with the advantage of privacy within the untamed wilderness. Each unit also enjoys a lounge area within the extensive open plan unit, as well as indoor and outdoor shower.

In keeping with the traditional and natural safari experience, there are no televisions in the Suites at Arathusa. Guests are, however, able to send or receive e-mails from the public areas and reception.

Additional amenities in the Suites include a mini bar (stocked with a selection of beverages), an electronic safe, hairdryer, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, mosquito net and tea/ coffee making facilities.

The lodge is an intimate one; its open-plan design and natural building materials allow it to blend harmoniously with the African bush surrounds. The main living area is intended for comfort. Whether quietly reflecting on the view, reading a good book, or enjoying conversation with friends or fellow safari goers, the warmth and charm of the lodge environment is the foundation of the Arathusa safari experience. The infinity swimming pool overlooks the waterhole, and is the perfect spot for wildlife viewing while cooling off on a sweltering African summer’s afternoon. Arathusa’s Safari Spa offers guests a comprehensive spa and wellness experience – indulge in luxurious pampering and relaxation, while answering to the call of the wild.

Guests can enjoy an alfresco dining experience in the traditional open-air boma (a brick & grass enclosed dining area), while being serenaded by the sounds of Africa’s creatures. Sumptuous cuisine is the order of the day. Meal times at Arathusa are a sociable affair, and guests are treated to sumptuous dishes, fresh produce and daily baked confectionery from our kitchen. Enjoy traditional South African cuisine in the outdoor boma, or stunning four-course fine dining at the lodge under the expert direction of the chefs. Arathusa also offers a range of superior South African wines.

Private landrovers with experienced rangers and trackers head into the bush in the early morning and late afternoon in search of Africa’s Big Five, and more. The more active will enjoy a guided bush walk with one of Arathusa’s experienced rangers.

Arathusa Safari Lodge, The Sabi Sand Wildtuin

The spacious, thatched chalets all feature large en suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioning, minibars, safes, tea/coffee making facilities and mosquito nets. Rooms have comfy chairs, a high thatched roof and a bath in the corner of the room. Bush-facing rooms also have their own private plunge pool.

Arathusa is located in the northern part of Sabi Sands Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park, and is therefore surrounded by some of the most varied and concentrated numbers of wildlife in South Africa.

Food and drink

Fresh local produce is the basis for meals at Arathusa. Continental breakfast is served after the morning game drive, consisting of a continental breakfast, with hot breakfast requests made to order. Lunch is a light table d’hôte option served prior to your afternoon game drive, while a high tea of cake and fruits is also served. Sundowner drinks are an integral part of any afternoon safari and while you’re out in the bush you can be served your favorite tipple with a series of snacks in a scenic spot. Dinner is a four course creative affair. Generally a social event, it may be held in a variety of places around the lodge, perhaps on the deck over the waterhole or in the boma.

Families are welcome at the lodge, but children under 12 are not permitted.

Facilities and activities

Game drives depart in the early evening and late afternoon in open vehicles with experienced and knowledgeable rangers. Photo opportunities and some close encounters are to be expected! The lodge also has a spa, which offers a wide range of treatments using locally sourced products.
