Otherwise, gourmet lovers will enjoy a culinary journey through Jordaan and visit a fishmonger, bakery and cheese store.

Day 2 - Amsterdam

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

In Arnhem, history buffs will love the Airborne Museum, viewing a depiction of the Battle of Arnhem in which the Allied Forces attempted to form a bridgehead on the northern banks of the Rhine river in September 1944.

Mat McLachlan announces 2024 Signature Battlefield Tour to the Western Front

Mat McLachlan announces 2024 Signature Battlefield Tour to the Western Front

Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours has launched its 2024 signature Tour to the Western Front, 9-day tour departing Paris on 16 September 2024 the only tour led by Mat in 2024.

“Exploring the Western Front is an eye-opening experience, and although the guns fell silent over a century ago there are always new stories to uncover,” founder, Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours, Mat Mat McLachlan, said.

“My 2024 Signature Tour will visit all the key sites in the Somme, from the dark days of the first day of the Somme to Pozieres and more. We then explore the extraordinary Ypres Salient – the site of the battlefields of Messines, Polygon Wood and the famous yet tragic Passchendaele, plus visit French Flanders including Bullecourt and Fromelles.”

“My good friend, historian and BattleWalks podcast co-host, Pete Smith, is also joining the tour, and together we will lead you to uncover the places that defined the Anzac spirit of mateship and sacrifice.”

The itinerary has been hand-designed by Mat McLachlan, including a host of behind-the-scenes experiences and special inclusions.

Highlights include:

· Special access to hidden rooms of the Ypres ramparts, the former headquarters of Allied generals including John Monash. These dusty vaults were impervious to shellfire and have changed little since 1918.

· Visiting the graves of Private Hunter and Sergeant Calder in the company of Mat, the two Australian soldiers who featured in Mat McLachlan’s documentary ‘Lost in Flanders’.

· Observing a replica Mark IV tank in action and exploring unique private collections of war material.

· A guided tour of Talbot House in Poperinge, an ‘everyman’s club’ that provided respite to both officers and enlisted men during the war, as well as visiting the local prison, which features cells where convicted soldiers were held before being shot at dawn and their graffiti can still be seen on the walls.

· An exclusive tour of the former Australian HQ at the Chateau of Bertangles, where General John Monash commanded Australian operations in the first half of 1918, including standing on the spot where Monash was knighted by King George V on the chateau steps.

· Explore the underground tunnels of Naours, where many Australian soldiers left their mark with graffiti.

· Unique local culinary experiences, including: a Welcome Dinner; a lunch at the Old Cheese Factory in Passchendaele and sampling of their acclaimed Passchendaele beer; the Sint Bernardus Brewery in the village of Watou to taste their famous ‘Trappist’ beer, brewed by local monks for centuries; a Farwell Dinner Cruise on the River Seine to see the grandeur of the City of Light at night, and more.

He also serves as the Regimental Historian of the Royal Regiment of Artillery. He has published widely on the First World War. His latest book (co-authored with John Buckley) is The Armchair General WW1: Can You Win the Great War? (Penguin, 2023)

After meeting in Paris we make a trip into the heart of the city to visit two stunning locations; the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial commemorating early American aviators who fought above the Western Front from as early as 1915 and the nearby Suresnes American Battle Monuments Commission cemetery .

Within sight of the Eiffel Tower, it offers breathtaking views of the city and is the final resting place of some truly remarkable characters who lost their lives as a result of the Great War.

On to Chateau Thierry to check in to our accommodation.

2nd Day: Belleau Wood & Chateau-Thierry

Our first full day exploring the battlefields in an action packed one, which sees us in the morning walking through the iconic battle for Belleau Wood. Fought in June 1918 by Doughboys and Marines of the 2nd Infantry Division, it was the perhaps the most well-known battle in which the AEF participated in the Great War.

Our afternoon visit today is to the town of Chateau Thierry, where troops of the US 3rd Infantry Division with incredible courage repulsed a major German attack which helped stall the final push of the German Spring Offensive, earning the men of 3rd ID the moniker ‘Rock of the Marne’.

Our third day is once again action packed, this time below ground, as we visit the bitterly contested ‘Chemin des Dames’ and a take a detailed tour of a huge and usually inaccessible set of subterranean tunnels in which men of the AEF left their mark more than a century ago.

In the company of expert tunnellers, it is a truly unforgettable experience!

Montfaucon4

Today we move eastwards once more to study the first truly large-scale assault mounted by the AEF in the summer of 1918 – the reduction of the St Mihiel salient.

A day in the woods and villages around Montsec, the remaining trenches of the Foret d’Apremont and Seyschprey provide a fascinating glimpse into the many challenges encountered by the Doughboys as they pursued the withdrawing German Army from this hard fought part of the Western Front.

Lost Battalion and Alvin York

Today we move to the infamous Meuse-Argonne front to cover two of the most remarkable actions of the First World War.

First, in the Argonne Forest itself we visit the Charlevaux Ravine and retrace the powerful and tragic story of the men of the ‘Lost Battalion’, trapped in this location for 5 days.

Secondly, we move a few miles northwards to explore the incredible story of Alvin York and the actions which resulted in his award of the Medal of Honor. A day packed full of history!

Argonne Forest

On our last full day on the battlefields, we continue the story of the Meuse-Argonne offensive with a look at the central assault on the hilltop stronghold of Montfaucon . Amongst those to find themselves involved in attacks here was a young tank commander named George Patton , who incredibly would be involved in the liberation of the same village in Two World Wars!

On the agenda for today is a visit to the breath-taking Meuse-Argonne Military Cemetery in Romagne, situated in the heart of the former battlefields. We finish our day with a visit to a lesser-known spot, the very location where on 11th November 1918 Private Henry Gunther took the tragic accolade of being the last allied soldier killed just moments before the Armistice came into effect.

Our tour complete, we return to Paris with a special final stop en-route to round off the story of the Doughboys on the Western Front.

Day 1 > Somme 1916 & 1918

Your tour begins in Amiens, in the heart of the Somme. The most convenient way to travel to Amiens is by train as it is only an hour north of Paris. You will be met by your Historian at Amiens train station at 9.30am. You will then enjoy a full day visiting the sites associated with Australian courage and sacrifice on the Somme in both 1916 and 1918. Essential sites include the village of Pozieres, scene of the most costly battle in Australia’s history, where 23,000 men were killed or wounded in six weeks. Nearby is Mouquet Farm, where the Australians and Germans fought a bloody action in August 1916. Also spend time exploring the British sites associated with the Battle of the Somme, including the massive 30-meter-deep Lochnagar Mine Crater, the Thiepval Memorial (where the names of 72,000 missing men are recorded) and the preserved trenches at the Newfoundland Memorial Park, Beaumont-Hamel. Our attention will then turn to the 1918 battles on the Somme, with a visit to Villers-Bretonneux, the town that was liberated by Australian troops on Anzac Day 1918. Here we will visit Victoria School (with its wonderful small Australian museum), Adelaide Cemetery (where Australia’s Unknown Soldier lay before being re-interred in Canberra in 1993) and the imposing Australian National Memorial, where the names of nearly 11,000 Australians with no known grave in France are recorded. We will also visit the brand new Sir John Monash Interpretive Centre, which tells the story of Australia’s achievements on the Western Front. We will then visit the site of the crash of the Red Baron in 1918 and the scene of the great Australian victory orchestrated by Sir John Monash at Hamel. We will then return to Amiens where you will check in to your 4-star hotel.

STAR INCLUSIONS   ★ Pick-up from Amiens station

★ Full day touring the Australian battlefields of the Somme   ★ Victoria School Museum

Day 2 > Bullecourt and Fromelles

Today we will leave the Somme and drive north, passing through the Australian battlefields of 1917 and heading towards the town of Ypres, just across the Belgian border. Our first stop will be the battlefield of Bullecourt, where Australia lost more than 10,000 men in two bloody battles in April and May 1917. We will pay our respects to them at the Slouch Hat memorial in the center of town and the Australian Memorial Park on the site of the German front line. We then travel on to the very moving 1916 battlefield of Fromelles, where Australia lost 5533 men during its first action on the Western Front. While here we will visit the Australian Memorial Park, VC Corner Cemetery (the only all-Australian cemetery in France) and see the site of the recently discovered Australian mass grave at Pheasant Wood and Fromelles Museum. Crossing the Belgian border, we will visit the battlefield of Messines, where Australian and New Zealand troops played a vital role in a huge British attack in June 1917. We will arrive in the town of Ypres late in the afternoon, giving us time to check into our 4-star hotel and explore the town’s charming main square. This evening we will walk to the Menin Gate, where the names of 54,000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers are recorded, for the moving Last Post ceremony. The Ypres fire brigade has performed this bugle ceremony every day and in all weather since the memorial opened in 1927. The only interruption was during the four years of German occupation during the Second World War – the ceremony recommenced on the day the town was liberated. (B)

STAR INCLUSIONS   ★  Full touring of the battlefields of Bullecourt, Fromelles and Messines

★ Attendance at Lost Post Service at the Menin Gate   ★ Fromelles Museum

Day 3 > The Ypres Salient

The Ypres Salient was a bulge in the front line that curved around Ypres for most of the war. More than a million men were killed or wounded trying to gain control of this small patch of ground. Today we will explore the Australian battlefields in the Salient, places where the Anzacs made history in 1917. Our first stop is the impressive In Flanders Fields Museum, where a provocative collection of relics and displays chronicles the fighting in Flanders and the personal stories of the people involved. We will then visit the 5th Australian Division Memorial at Polygon Wood and see the graves of Private Hunter and Sergeant Calder, the two Australian soldiers who featured in Mat McLachlan’s documentary ‘Lost in Flanders’ . We then get a taste of the devastation caused by four years of continuous artillery fire at the cratered landscape of Hill 60, before visiting Tyne Cot, the world’s largest Commonwealth war cemetery. Tyne Cot sits in the heart of one of the most horrific battlefields of the war — Passchendaele. Our final stop today is at the German Cemetery at Langemarck, where we will learn about the men on the other side of the line. In the late afternoon our guide will drive us back across the French border to the city of Lille, where you will be dropped at the train station for a connection back to Paris or London. (You also have the option of staying on in Ypres or Lille.) (B)

“We have no hesitation in giving you a 10/10, and highly recommend Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours. Adrienne & Graham Buttner Bombing of Darwin Anniversary Tour I really enjoyed the tour it was enjoyable, entertaining and informative, could not have asked for anything better. Jack Thomason Bombing of Darwin Anniversary Tour Amazing!  My sister and I visited the Western Front and experienced a one day private tour on the Ypres Salient and also a one day private tour on the Somme. As I go through my photographs of the 3 weeks we spent in Europe, it is these 2 days that I keep coming back to and would class as the highlight of the trip. The information provided was first class, the effort to locate some of our ancestors who did not make it home was very much appreciated and the whole experience was extremely moving.

I know that these 2 days will stay with me forever.

Absolutely incredible!

Erdem as guide, Roachie as our historian and Zafir as our fearless bus driver.

I would like to recommend highly the Western Front Battlefields Tour.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The whole experience was one I will remember.

The Tour Guide was very knowledgeable and approachable. The facilities were amazing.

I have been in complete awe of the service and experience from Mat McLachlan tours.

Not only was my family and I reassured about our safety from the moment we booked but we knew we were in safe hands the moment we started the tour.

8 official residences of Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin

apt western front tour

1. Novo-Ogaryevo in the Moscow Region

Main house of the Novo-Ogaryevo residence.

Main house of the Novo-Ogaryevo residence.

This is the place Putin calls home.

Located in the western part of the Moscow Region, not far from the capital, this residence is not a state secret, and it pops up in Google maps searches quite readily.

Novo-Ogaryevo became Putin’s official residence in 2000. Although he does not own the estate, he considers it home, which can easily be deduced from the fact that the residence remained in his de-facto possession when he took a four-year-long break from the presidency in 2008-2012, serving as Russia’s prime minister. According to Russian law , a retiring president can choose a residence to be allocated for perpetuity. Leaving office in 2008, Putin chose Novo-Ogaryevo.

The estate’s main house was built in the 19th century by order of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the brother of Emperor Alexander III, and was later used as a residence by the Soviet government to welcome foreign delegations.

Unlike the White House, Novo-Ogoryevo is closed to the public. Still, here is an hour-long sneak peek inside. You can even see what’s in Putin’s fridge, 38 minutes and 16 seconds into the video .

2. The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin.

The Moscow Kremlin.

Since the Middle Ages, (with the exception of the years 1712 to 1917), the Moscow Kremlin was the main official residence of Russian leaders.

The President’s office is located in the Kremlin Senate, a historic building built by order of Catherine the Great from 1776 to 1787. Originally, it housed the Moscow branches of the Governing Senate.

President Putin's office in the Kremlin.

President Putin's office in the Kremlin.

Putin’s Kremlin office is located in the center of the building’s north wing. Unlike the U.S. presidential office, the Kremlin office is a rectangular shape, and in contrast to the Oval Office , the windows are located on the left side of the president’s table, not behind it. The table also differs in form from the one in the Oval Office: it has an elongated adjustment in front where Russia’s president holds one-on-one meetings with other government officials. The walls of the Kremlin office are inlaid with oak panels, and the ceiling is decorated with an ornamental pattern and has two massive chandeliers.

On the table multiple phones comprise the secure communication system used by Russia’s president.

Also  unlike the U.S. president, who is expected to live in the White House, Putin does not live in the Kremlin. Naturally, he can always drop by his historic office in a helicopter or by   car.

3. An unknown apartment at an unknown location

apt western front tour

This is the only residence that officially belongs to Putin as a private individual.   This 77-square-meter apartment is remarkably modest for Russia’s president. Little is known about how it looks or even the approximate location, and the only bit of information is its size, which tells us it must be a two- or three-bedroom apartment in a residential building somewhere in Russia. Odds are that it’s in St. Petersburg, where Putin grew up.

Putin also owns a garage that measures 18-square meters.

4. A government-leased apartment in Moscow

Putin’s address in Moscow is widely publicized in the media: Akademika Zelinskogo Street, 6. The apartment is 153.7 square meters, and it was allocated to Putin in his capacity as Prime Minister under Boris Yeltsin in the late 1990s.

Although it’s not known what floor the apartment is on, we have a couple of photos taken inside the modest apartment.

5. Bocharov Ruchey in Sochi

In addition to his main residence, Putin has a number of residences throughout Russia. One of the most widely publicized is Bocharov Ruchey in Sochi.

Completed in 1955, it was commissioned by Kliment Voroshilov, a Soviet marshall and strongman under Joseph Stalin. This government dacha was frequented by Soviet leaders such as Khrushchev and Brezhnev. In modern Russia, Bocharov Ruchey became an official summer residence of Russia’s president, and it’s the only government dacha on the Black Sea.

Here, Putin met U.S. President George W. Bush in 2008, and in 2018 he welcomed Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel with flowers .

6. Valdai residence

The Valdai residence was initially planned as one of Stalin’s dachas, but he thought it too dangerous.

The Valdai residence was initially planned as one of Stalin’s dachas, but he thought it too dangerous.

Another official residence is located in the Novgorod Region, and goes by three different names: Valdai, Uzhyn, and Dolgie Borody.

The residence was initially planned as one of Stalin’s dachas, but he thought  it too dangerous: in the 1930s the residence was the only building on a small peninsula and was surrounded by dense forest, with only one escape route to the mainland.

Nevertheless, the Valdai residence was completed in the 1980s. The first president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, liked fishing here. When Putin inherited the highest office, he also received the right to use the Valdai residence.

Surprisingly, you can check in and spend a couple of nights in one of the houses, but not in the actual president’s residence. It will only cost some $800 (50,000 rubles) for a stay of two nights.

7. Konstantin Palace in St. Petersburg

apt western front tour

This palace, formerly owned by the Romanov family, is located on the Gulf of Finland, only 20 kilometers from the center of St. Petersburg.

Initially planned by Peter the Great as an imperial residence that would eclipse Versaille in its glory Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich of Russia resided here.

apt western front tour

In Soviet times, the estate became known as the Congress Palace, and was severely damaged during World War II. Also, it hosted students of the Leningrad Arctic School, but slowly decayed after the collapse of the USSR until the early 2000s when the Office of the President launched a massive restoration.

Although Putin does not live here, the palace is often used for official state events. The Konstantin Palace served as a venue for both the G-8 and G-20 summits in 2006 and 2013, respectively.

8. Yantar’ in Kaliningrad

apt western front tour

This presidential residence in Kaliningrad was built in the same place where the first Chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von Bismarck, had his palace.

During the War, the place hosted the Luftwaffe barracks. The current state residence was only completed in 2011 and opened by then-President Dmitri Medvedev.

Although the residence officially belongs to the Office of the President, it has only hosted Medvedev and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov.
