Whether moody and grey, or clear and blue, the scenery around Valdez is stunning. This day cruise takes passengers deep into that beautiful landscape for six hours of glacier and wildlife viewing.

The largest tidewater glacier in southcentral Alaska.

The day tour starts in Port Valdez and slowly cruises into the Valdez Arm of Prince William Sound. The sound is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains and an intricate coastline of fjords, rock beaches, and craggy sea stacks. A trio of barrier islands protect from the more tumultuous water in the Gulf of Alaska. The sound's calm waters are home to a variety of marine wildlife. Passengers often see puffins and cormorants, sea lions and seals, Dall sheep and brown bear, and sometimes even orcas.

Rounding Heather Island, the catamaran soon enters Columbia Bay. Pouring from an elevation of 10,000 feet, the Columbia Glacier is the one of the largest tidewater glaciers in southcentral Alaska. It is also one of the most active glaciers in the world. This makes for exceptional glacier viewing, with guests routinely able to photograph huge chunks of ice breaking away and crashing dramatically into the otherwise still water. After a lunch of chowder and bagels, the tour returns into Valdez.

The Columbia Glacier Cruise is a great choice for guests staying at the Copper River Princess Lodge . Valdez is about 100 miles or two scenic hours away by car.

The tour boat has two levels with heated cabins on each, wrap-around exterior walkways, and viewing decks at the bow and stern. There are also power outlets for recharging cameras and phones. No smoking is allowed on the boat.

The onboard meal includes a hearty bowl of clam chowder, a bagel, cream cheese, and cookies. A vegetarian lunch option is available when requested in advance. Complimentary coffee, hot tea, lemonade, and water are available throughout the cruise.

What to Bring

It is important to dress in layers for this day tour. Bring a rain jacket, hat, and gloves. Wear rubber-soled shoes. Even on a sunny day the air coming off the glacier can be in the 40s. Be sure to bring a camera and binoculars. Seasickness is not generally a problem in the calm water of Prince William Sound, but if concerned, air on the side of caution and take preventatives before departing.

Special Instructions

Check in at the tour office on the west side of the Valdez Small Boat Harbor one hour prior to departure.

valdez alaska cruises

As far as destinations go, Valdez, Alaska is a tiny town. (New Valdez, that is, since a 1964 earthquake destroyed the original.) But the current version of the town makes up for its size with big fishing action that’s sure to lure in the enthusiast angler! Salmon and halibut are among the local inhabitants, but fishing isn’t quite the end of the Valdez story — the local waterways are also a great place from which to kick off some kayaking action. Outside of the sporting world, you’ll even find your chance to visit regional sights like Worthington Glacier, best experienced from Thompson Pass, or experience a mini-cruise through Prince William Sound toward glacier and wildlife sightseeing perfection.

Valdez is a picturesque community located on Prince William Sound in Southcentral, Alaska . It is well known for its fishing heritage and as one of Alaska’s few ice-free ports. The surrounding coastal mountains have been compared to those of the Swiss Alps.

The original town of Valdez, founded in 1898, was created via a scam to lure prospectors off the Klondike Gold Rush trail. Steamship companies promoted the Valdez Glacier Trail as a better route than Skagway for miners to reach the Klondike gold fields and the Copper River fields in interior Alaska. With steep glacier trails, many miners died attempting the crossing, and Valdez only flourished after the construction of the Richardson Highway in 1899. The highway connected Valdez and Fairbanks and permanently established the town as the first overland supply station in the interior of Alaska.

Since its gold rush days, Valdez has evolved into an important shipping center because it is the most northerly year-round, ice-free port in the western hemisphere. Construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was completed in 1977, and Valdez was chosen as the terminus for the 800-mile pipeline out of Prudhoe Bay. During the construction phase of the pipeline, Valdez’s population surged to 10,000. When it was completed, and the oil started flowing, the people settled to their current level of about 4,000 year-round residents.

Valdez is a port town in Valdez-Cordova Census Area (Alaska USA), with population around 4,000. Valdez is ranked among state's most important cruise ports. Valdez was named after the Spanish Royal Navy.officer Antonio Valdes y Fernandez Bazan (1744-1816), who became famous during the the Battle of Havana (March-August 1762).

Valdez is a former Gold Rush town, located at a fjord's head on Prince William Sound's eastern side. Port Valdez started to flourish after 1899, when the Fairbanks road link was opened. It suffered damage during 1964 Alaskan earthquake. The town is also close to the site of the disastrous Exxon Valdez (oil tanker) spill of March 24, 1989.

Oil from Trans-Alaska pipeline is loaded on ships at Valdez oil terminal. There are 14 aboveground crude oil storage tanks situated at the terminal, and 3 to 5 oil tankers depart from Valdez oil terminal each week. Over 15,000 tankers full of oil have left since the pipeline started work in 1976.

Freight moves through the town bound for state's interior via Richardson Highway. Valdez is a port of call in Alaska Marine Highway ( ferry system). Valdez Airport (aka Pioneer Field) serves only one airline (Ravn Alaska) offering domestic flights to and from Fairbanks AK, Anchorage AK and Seattle WA .

Valdez is a notable fishing port, serving both sport and commercial fishing boats. Sightseeing of glaciers, wildlife viewing, together with heliskiing and deep-sea fishing are among the main activities supporting the local tourism industry. To the north (on Richardson Highway) is Thompson Pass, featuring spectacular waterfalls and glaciers close to the road. Thompson Pass is also popular as a tricky driving destination during winter months.

Cruises from/to Valdez, Alaska

Valdez, alaska cruise port.

Located in picturesque Prince William Sound, Valdez is an intimate but lively town in southeast Alaska. Vitalized by its great fishing and spectacular hiking trails, it offers an active but wholesome downtown scene. While Valdez does get more snowfall than anywhere in Alaska, during cruise season the temperature often ranges in the low to high 60s. It was named after Spanish naval officer Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán as a ploy to lure prospectors during the Klondike gold rush. While the gold wasn’t plentiful and rumors regarding a glacier trail to the gold fields led to disaster and even deaths, the town was developed in 1898 and a highway between Valdez and Fairbanks was constructed in 1899. Current tourism is fueled by sightseeing through and around the amazing glacier trails, wildlife tours, and adventurous deep sea fishing. There are also plenty of sites for hiking and picnicking, each with access to the water and scenery.

  • Reel in that big one with some recreational deep sea fishing. And yes, there truly are some enormous halibut in and around Prince William Sound.
  • Venture north to Thompson Pass to see glaciers and waterfalls up close, real close. In fact, many are right beside the road you’ll travel to get there.
  • Learn about the area’s culture, both ancient and modern, at the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive. Of particular interest is the exhibit on the Good Friday earthquake of 1964.
  • Bask in the wonder of the Columbia Glacier. Like a sea full of risen glass, seeing this giant glacier will truly illustrate better than any picture the extent of Mother Nature’s capabilities.

Captain Amanda looks forward to the journey up Unakwik Inlet almost as much as the visit to the glacier. In her opinion, “There is not a more spectacular body of water in all of Prince William Sound. The water is exceedingly calm, and the nearshore cruising is amazing.”

Captain Caleb is enticed by Unakwik Inlet’s “quiet serenity and many forested passageways.”

When Marketing & Reservation Manager Selah has the time, she will choose to hop on the Meares Glacier Cruise so she can have more time on the water. “Traveling the extra distance to Meares Glacier increases my chances to see wildlife, especially the Dall’s porpoise, whales, puffins, otters and seals!

Welcome to Valdez and Prince William Sound

Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises respectfully acknowledges that we live, work, and operate on the traditional land of the Alaska Native Alutiiq/Sugpiaq peoples. It is because of their stewardship that we are able to share the wonders of Prince William Sound today.

The traditional name of this area in Sugt’stun, the language of the Sugpiaq, is Suacit, which means, “the people of the place that rises into view.” Suacit and the surrounding Prince William Sound villages provided a bountiful harvest for the Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people. We strive to respect the traditional lands and waterways as we operate. We encourage our guests to take time to learn about the history of our region’s Alaska Native people and their living culture.

Our current itinerary for 10 days is:

1. fly into Anchorage , drive to Glennallen for night (or somewhere on the way)

2, 3. Valdez, stay 2 nights

4. Palmer or nearby on way to Denali

5, 6, 7. Denali

9. Girdwood - mainly to drive along Turnagain Arm

10. Anchorage to fly out

My questions are:

1. Should we plan time in Kenai Peninsula without water activities?

2. The trip to Valdez is supposed to be beautiful and we enjoy nature and scenery, so is it worthwhile?

3. Is this itinerary doable with time and distances? We would stop for views, very short walks, musk ox farm, etc.

Thank you for your wisdom and input!

I would suggest adding either 26 Glaciers or their shorter Glacier Quest out of Whittier. Those offer a money-back guarantee against seasickness, see the route maps here: https://phillipscruises.com/26-glacier-cruise/ You'd miss a neat experience by not spending time near a tidewater (calving) glacier, plus that would give you a chance to view marine wildlife--though the shorter tour doesn't go very far so on that you likely wouldn't see much wildlife. I don't think I've ever read a review complaining about seasickness on those boats, but I have read plenty of reviews by folks who were happy to report that they felt just fine the whole trip. You can filter for the word "seasick" to get reviews that mention that topic: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g31163-d620726-r118494448-Phillips_Cruises_and_Tours-Whittier_Alaska.html#REVIEWS Blackstone Bay is gorgeous, so if you go even that far it will be "worth it". I suggest booking a day when no cruise ships are in port (usually Sat, Sun, and every other Wed & Mon) so there is less chance of the ship being crowded. You can find port schedule for Whittier for 2025 here: https://claalaska.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/WHT-Whittier-2025.pdf

You might want to include an easy guided hike on Matanuska Glacier with MICA or Nova, and could use that as a half-way overnight if you want to.

The drive 1 hr. south of Anchorage is incredibly scenic, plus you might want to visit Wildlife Conservation Center.

Without telling us what activities you intend to do at each place, we can't evaluate whether you've allowed enough or too much time at any given place....

And we don't know what time zone you're coming from, so that might affect what we'd suggest for your first day. Are you "losing" 1 hr. or 4?

valdez alaska cruises

Yes, ten days should handle the trip well. Water trips out of Valdez will be exposed to open seas quicker. Taking the 26 Glacier cruise from Whittier is far, far more likely to be to your liking. As you head to and from Valdez, look at diverting to the old highway (paved) to Copper Center. Stop in the National Park HQ there just for kicks, a break, and information. The old highway also passes through the local Indian settlement. It is a residential place and NOT a tourist place, so just quietly drive through and admire.

A final wild potential is to book a mountain, sea and glacier sight seeing flight in a small plane out of Valdez. I haven't done it myself, but the setting is perfect, and this is the place drawing in the best skiiers in the world for heli skiing in the mountain area you will see from the ground.
