David Gilmour shares plans to tour for first time in eight years

He also teased he was soon to record more material

David Gilmour (Photo by Matthew Eisman/Getty Images)

David Gilmour has announced his plans to tour for the first time in eight years.

The former  Pink Floyd guitarist made the comments in a new interview with Uncut (via  Far Out and Neptune Pink Floyd ) , where he discussed potentially touring his upcoming album ‘ Luck and Strange ‘. It is set for release on September 6.

Speaking to the outlet, Gilmour said there was “an unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the ‘70s”, but would be more likely to perform songs from other decades: “Yeah, they might be better represented. I mean, at least one from the ’60s. The one we’ve done in the past is ‘Astronomy’ [‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’, 1967]. That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start.

“There’s songs from the ‘Momentary Lapse Of Reason’ and ‘The Division Bell’ albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

Gilmour also spoke about the amendments he made to his touring band, reasoning: “It was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band. So I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan. So we’re going to have some of the younger guys alongside Guy and the Webb Sisters, who sang with Leonard Cohen on his last tours.”

Finally, the guitarist teased there was more unreleased material to come, saying he was planning more recording dates once the tour was finished, “which will practically force me to concentrate [on writing more songs]. I mean, we’ve got plenty more pieces of half-formed music that we can get started on. The intention is to get something else out as soon as possible.”

In the same interview, the guitarist and songwriter discussed The Beatles’ documentary  Get Back , calling it a “hard watch” . Directed by Peter Jackson in 2021, Get Back was constructed from over 60 hours of footage when they recorded their final album, 1970’s ‘Let It Be’.

He specifically noted “Paul being domineering and and John ducking back because of the moment he was in at the time and George leaving and coming back.”

“Horrible, really, I mean it’s lovely for us to watch, but I’m surprised Paul allowed it,” he said.

Gilmour also discussed the potential to have an ABBA Voyage -syle holographic Pink Floyd show , saying: “If someone came up with all the money and all the brilliant ideas – and then once we’ve agreed to a series of very, very difficult and onerous conditions – I’d say, ‘Yeah, OK.’”

In other news, the guitarist recently featured on Mark Knopfler’s re-recorded version of his song ‘Going Home’ alongside  Queen ‘s  Brian May ,  Bruce Springsteen ,  Black Sabbath ’s Tony Iommi,  Eric Clapton ,  Rolling Stones  guitarist  Ronnie Wood  and many more.

David Gilmour Luck and Strange

David Gilmour has announced his new album ‘Luck and Strange’, to be released on 6th September and 21  Tour Dates at The Royal Albert Hall in London, The Circo Massimo in Italy, The Intuit Dome, The Hollywood Bowl in CA, and Madison Square Garden in NY.

'Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with alt-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on ‘Luck and Strange’, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating, “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’ and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house. Some contributions emerged from the live streams that Gilmour and family performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on ‘Between Two Points’. Gabriel Gilmour also sings backing vocals. The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn, is inspired by a lyric written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’. Of working with his family on ‘Luck and Strange’, David says, “Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany’s voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I’d felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy.” Luck and Strange 1. David Gilmour Announces First 2024 Concert Dates

David Gilmour will perform six shows at London's Royal Albert Hall this October.

The Pink Floyd star will play at the famed venue on Oct. 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15.

His first solo album in nearly a decade, Love and Strange , is due to be released on Sept. 6. Last month he shared the album's first single, " The Piper's Call ."

"I'm coming to the Albert Hall in early October this year, to play my favorite venue, certainly my favorite venue in England," Gilmour explains in a video announcing the shows. "It always has such a wonderful atmosphere, beautiful place. It sounds great, too.

In a recent interview Gilmour expressed an "unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the '70s" in a concert setting, instead saying that the band's '60s and '80s eras "might be better represented.

However, the video announcing the Royal Albert Hall shows concludes with live footage of Gilmour performing the Waters-era Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb."

The ongoing feud between Gilmour and former Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters has intensified in recent years. Last year Gilmour's wife and songwriting partner Polly Samson called Waters "antisemitic to your rotten core." Gilmour not only shared her tweet, he labeled it " demonstrably true ."

Waters has mounted several tours focused on Pink Floyd's music, most recently the 2022-23 This is Not a Drill trek

Fans who purchase Luck and Strange from Gilmour's official website will have the first chance to buy tickets for his Royal Albert shows, with tickets going on sale to the general public on May 10.

David Gilmour Ends Tour With Stunning Pink Floyd Hits, Soaring Solos

By Kory Grow

Madison Square Garden briefly became an 18,000-seat hotbox when David Gilmour ended his short North American tour there Tuesday night. The first thing you noticed as you walked through the halls was the dense, nearly physical cloud of weed wafting around you. The next thing was the floating orb above the stage; a staple of Pink Floyd concerts since 1974, it’s a circular projector screen that’s studded with lights to cut through the fog onstage. And then, once the concert began, you found that it was the round, warm notes of Gilmour’s guitars that were the most overwhelming. The experience was pure sensory overload, and since this was the Pink Floyd leader’s first tour in a decade, also a rare treat.

In late March, Gilmour launched a modest North American tour of the States to support his most recent solo album, last year’s Rattle That Lock , playing arenas and theaters in Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and New York. He played a nearly identical set list at all of the shows – mixing 14 Pink Floyd favorites with seven Rattle That Lock selections, a splash of On an Island and an intermission for the perfect cocktail – but it was a winning combination that wowed the Big Apple on the last date of the tour. There were thousands of lost souls swimming in a fish bowl (even if they all did sit down for most of the concert), and they were all rapt by his and his band’s performances of songs that date back to 1967, the year he joined Pink Floyd to sing, play kazoo and fill in on guitar as his college chum Syd Barrett spiraled into the ether.

Although the 70-year-old rarely spoke to the audience, other than for the occasional thank you and to introduce his 10-piece band, the night seemed like a celebration of nearly 50 years of cosmic rock. The show began with three Rattle That Lock tunes, which found the screen projecting gritty Wall -like animations, as the band settled into its groove. By the fourth tune of the night – Floyd’s bittersweet, poetic anthem to loneliness “Wish You Were Here” – the arena welcomed a new light source: pinpricks of cellphone flashes piercing the dark. Gilmour voice sounded as it did on the original – husky, sandpapery, weathered – as he mouthed notes along with the acoustic guitar solo. “Do you think you can tell?” he sang to an audience for possibly the thousandth time and, again for possibly the thousandth time, they roared back that they did.

Despite the fans’ obvious ardor for the hits of past decades, Gilmour’s solo selections won over the crowd. During “A Boat Lies Waiting,” he played a gorgeous, soaring lap-steel guitar lead that sounded like a theremin, elating the audience’s amateur photographers, and on “The Blue,” he yanked at his Stratocaster’s whammy bar until it created the sort of eerie, ghostlike wailing that Tom Morello uses pedals to duplicate. When he played Rattle That Lock ‘s jazzy “The Girl in the Yellow Dress” – accompanied by its whimsical animated video – concertgoers took video of the whole song as though it were a classic.

David Gilmour didn’t just take the blues and transform it into epic psychedelic prog – he changed the way we play guitar solos

We examine how the Pink Floyd guitar hero altered the way we approach the blues – and it’ll whip your phrasing and feel into shape

A B/W image of David Gilmour performs with Pink Floyd in 1977, playing his Black Strat

Few players have taken the blues vocabulary and incorporated it into progressive and psychedelic rock with such eloquence. David Gilmour’s tone, note choice and sense of rhythm elevated Pink Floyd – and solos in general – to a different level when he joined the band in 1967.

As the era of the epic guitar solo dawned, David established himself as a soloist few could match, with a strong sense of melody and a knack for creating memorable parts – even in some of the more ‘out there’ freeform jams that were so characteristic of the early Floyd.

From this time up to and including The  Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, there were strong echoes (pun intended) of Jimi Hendrix in David’s Fuzz Face’d ambient solos. From Wish You Were Here onwards, he refined his tones a little more.

There was still lots of edge when required, but he developed a more controlled sound, often featuring the latest gadgets as they became available: for example, the MXR Phase 90 features on Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Have A Cigar .

Though David is famous for his complicated multi-amp rigs and effects racks, he maintains that it’s possible to get the essence of his sound with relatively simple and easily available gear. This may seem hard to believe, but it is certainly true to say that David’s playing would be recognisable whatever he plugged into.

David Gilmour's blues-rock phrasing techniques lesson - YouTube

The example solo/licks here are inspired by his solos on tracks such as Comfortably Numb , On An Island and What Do You Want From Me . I’m using the bridge pickup with medium/high gain (not too much, though).

David is known for playing at high stage/studio volumes and gets most of his sustain from this, so be prepared to tweak and maybe add a little compression before any drive. A digital echo/reverb gives a nice finishing touch.

The first phrase establishes a strong beginning with the held bend, before playing around more rhythmically in this same area (shape 1 C# minor pentatonic) and reiterating the bend to finish.

Be very mindful of details such as vibrato, short staccato hits and bluesy quarter-tone bends. These are marked in the transcription, but in an ideal scenario you’ll eventually find yourself adding this sort of stuff in without thinking too consciously. That’s when you’ll know things are really coming together!

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

Beginning in a similar manner to Example 1 with a held repeated bend, we soon kick things up a gear, shifting between shapes 1 and 5 of the C# minor pentatonic. A particularly notable feature here is the repeated use of that doublestop at the 9th fret of the third and second strings.

Pull this slightly sharp and you’re using one of David’s favourite devices, featured in many of his solos. Elsewhere, keep an eye out for little details like staccato notes and even a touch of palm muting.

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

Reusing the last note of Example 2, we then rake quickly across a C# minor triad. You’ll recognise this as another favourite move of David’s; it’s a great way to add an exciting flourish without feeling the need to zoom around the fretboard.

We follow up with some funky doublestops and muted rhythmic hits. Maybe try a few different ways to finish this phrase using different rhythms or string bends. This could be the way to incorporate some Gilmour into your own style.

David Gilmour blues lesson tab

Starting with a rake across the second and first strings, we then tackle a couple of held melodic bends. Be particularly careful when pitching these, as you’ll need to hold them there. The same goes for the following bar just before the staccato triplets.

We finish with the busiest passage of all, but it’s all taken from shapes 1 and 5 of the C# minor pentatonic, so we’re on familiar ground. Just take your time and don’t feel you need to duplicate exactly what is being played here. The vibe is what matters most.

Pink Floyd – Time (Official Audio) - YouTube

Perhaps an obvious choice, but it would be difficult to justify not citing this one. Continuing somewhat from where 1971’s Meddle left off, David is still using a very Hendrix-influenced fuzz sound, though he’s already refining it with the liberal use of a Binson Echorec.

Check out his searing solo on Time , contrasting approaches on Money and some funky rhythmic Uni-Vibe (set to its fastest setting) on Any Colour You Like .

Pink Floyd – The Wall

In The Flesh - Pink Floyd - The Wall - 4K Remastered - YouTube

Though tensions were apparently developing in the band by this point, it contains some of David’s finest recorded moments with a respectful nod to the Wish You Were Here album.

Check out In the Flesh? just to hear the power of his Strat tone, then The Thin Ice for a great example of how refined his lead tone had become at this point. Inevitably, we must mention the great Comfortably Numb , but do also check out the break on Young Lust .

David Gilmour – On An Island

David Gilmour - The Blue (Live At Pompeii) - YouTube

This solo album is absolutely full of classic Gilmour solos. Particular highlights are the two contrasting solos on the title track, but be sure to listen to The Blue for some very wacky moments courtesy of the DigiTech Whammy pedal.

Take A Breath features a satisfying amount of aggression, and honourable mention should go to the almost hi-fi clean soloing on the final track Where We Start . Having an orchestra to back you probably helps with the inspiration!

Roger Waters Is ‘Antisemitic to Rotten Core,’ Says Former Pink Floyd Lyricist Polly Samson — and Her Husband, David Gilmour, Emphatically Agrees

Samson and Gilmour also called Waters "a Putin apologist" — and a lip-syncer.

Pink Floyd singer-guitarist David Gilmour and his wife, Polly Samson, who wrote lyrics for the band’s later songs, are not pulling any punches about Roger Waters , whose stances on Israel, Ukraine and Russia have alarmed many of the band’s followers in recent years. On social media, Samson called Waters “rotten to your antisemitic core” and “a Putin apologist,” among other things — and Gilmour emphatically cosigned his spouse’s statement, writing: “Every word demonstrably true.”

Waters responded to Samson’s tweet with his own Twitter message, written in the third person, which some followers took as a hint that he is considering legal action. “Roger Waters is aware of the incendiary and wildly inaccurate comments made about him on Twitter by Polly Samson which he refutes entirely,” the message read. “He is currently taking advice as to his position.”

pic.twitter.com/CIIy5r6SyA — Roger Waters (@rogerwaters) February 6, 2023

Waters has given many interviews in recent years that some fans who support Israel and/or Ukraine have considered a last straw. Samson and Gilmour did not say what it was that triggered this explosive statement, but the most likely source of their suddenly public ire is an interview the singer-bassist did in which he criticized his former bandmates for having reunited to record a pro-Ukraine song last year and otherwise doubled down on some of his most polarizing positions.

“I have seen the video” released under the Floyd banner, Waters said, “and I am not surprised, but I find it really, really sad. It’s so alien to me, this action is so lacking in humanity. It encourages the continuation of the war. Pink Floyd is a name I used to be associated with. That was a huge time in my life, a very big deal. To associate that name now with something like this… proxy war makes me sad. I mean, they haven’t made the point of demanding, ‘Stop the war, stop the slaughter, bring our leaders together to talk!’ It’s just this content-less waving of the blue and yellow flag.”

Waters called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “probably the most provoked invasion ever.”

“What everyone in the West is being told is the ‘unprovoked invasion’ narrative. Huh? Anyone with half a brain can see that the conflict in Ukraine was provoked beyond all measure,” he said.

The article found Waters reiterating that he would play in Moscow but never Israel, which, as a supporter of the Palestinian cause, he considers a “genocidal” nation. “Moscow does not run an apartheid state based on the genocide of the indigenous inhabitants,” said Waters. Challenged repeatedly on his anti-Ukraine statements, he said, “You seem to be asking me to see Russia from the current Russo-phobic perspective. I choose to see it differently.”

Waters has had concerts in Poland canceled over his views. In a statement on his website prefacing the interview reprint, he vowed not to back down. “Wild horses couldn’t keep me away,” he wrote, “and neither can this apartheid rabble.” He tore into what he called “an outrageous and despicable smear campaign by the Israeli lobby to denounce me as an anti-semite, which I am not, never have been and never will be.”

Waters, Gilmour and Mason last played together at a Waters show in London in 2011, a rare moment of detente between frontmen who have often been at odds, to say the least, since they last recorded together as Pink Floyd in the early 1980s. Their only other joint appearance since the “Final Cut” album was a reunion set at Live 8 in 2005.

Their business interests, nonetheless, remain aligned, for purposes that include the Floyd catalog reportedly being up for sale at a price in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Although it was Waters’ intent that Pink Floyd not go on when he left the group in the early ’80s, Gilmour, Mason and Rick Wright opted to continue without him under the Floyd banner into the ’90s, enjoying successful followup albums and tours, with Samson drafted to write some of the lyrics in Waters’ absence. Fans have continued to hope for a reunion, even as both Gilmour and Waters have made clear just how extraordinarily unlikely that is, with little coming of Mason’s peacemaking efforts.

Waters first faced charges of antisemitism when he emblazoned a Star of David on an inflatable pig that flew over the audience during an “Animals”-themed segment of his tour, although his response was that he considered the emblem to be a symbol of Israel specifically and not the Jewish people generally.

We're pausing our coverage of the war in Ukraine here, but you can follow live updates on the NATO summit over on the  Politics Hub.

The summit, which comes on the 75th anniversary of the alliance, is a crucial moment for Ukraine, as the Biden administration seeks to bake in its support before the November election, which could see a second Donald Trump presidency and a dramatic shift in foreign policy.

For now, a new NATO command for Ukraine to provide security assistance and training is expected to be announced, alongside immediate military support, including air defence.

NATO's 32 members are poised to unveil "substantial" new aid and reiterate a membership pledge for Ukraine.

Alliance partners have already said they will deliver five additional Patriot and other air defence systems.

On the sidelines of the summit, Joe Biden is expected to meet Keir Starmer for their first face-to-face talks.

Before you switch over, here is a quick recap of today's key developments so far:

  • F-16 fighter jets will be flying in the skies of Ukraine this summer, said US secretary of state Antony Blinken;
  • Poland must prepare its soldiers for a "full-scale conflict", said its armed forces chief of staff;
  • NATO allies will announce a minimum baseline of €40bn (£33.8bn) in funding for Ukraine within the next year, the White House said;
  • Russia scrambled a fighter jet to escort a Norwegian patrol plane away from Russian airspace over the Barents Sea, according to the Russian defence ministry;
  • Foreign Secretary David Lammy demanded the immediate release of British national Vladimir Kara-Murza, held in "deplorable" conditions in Russia.

By Deborah Haynes , security and defence editor

Initial noises by the new British government on defence have stirred fears among experts that repairing the UK's war-fighting prowess is not a burning priority despite mounting threats.

Keir Starmer used a trip to Washington for a major NATO summit this week to declare a "cast iron" commitment to increase spending on the armed forces to 2.5% of national income, from just over 2% – but without setting a clear timeframe, which immediately makes the promise look weak to allies and foes.

The government also revealed that a "Strategic Defence Review" will be launched next week – but ministers could not say when that would be concluded either other than "within the next year".

It means any certainty on the size, shape and budget of the armed forces – hollowed out by decades of cuts under previous Conservative and Labour administrations – will not materialise until next summer, even though the problems plaguing defence are well known.

At the same time, Sir Keir will be pressuring other European allies to spend more on their militaries, as NATO countries in Europe adapt to be less reliant on the United States – a shift that will become more urgent if Donald Trump is re-elected to the White House.

"It's contradictory," a defence source said of the prime minister's position.

"The government will ask NATO members to spend 2.5% but will claim it won't do that itself until fiscal rules allow. To be honest, I'm confused."

John Healey, the new defence secretary, has spent the past four years preparing for the job and is very well informed about the challenges and complexities involved in rebuilding the armed forces and also securing much better value for money from the defence budget.

It means he will surely have ideas already about what the outcome of the review will be.

He will also know that without swift, significant investment, difficult decisions will have to be made to cut programmes that currently are not funded.

Mr Healey will be overseeing the defence review – a return back to how this body of work used to be delivered when George Robertson was defence secretary in the 1990s.

By contrast, under successive Tory governments, these kind of assessments were renamed and widened into a strategic defence and security review and then an integrated review, headed by the Cabinet Office, that covered a much wider remit of foreign policy as well as security and areas such as science and technology.

Returning the running of this new review to the bowels of the Ministry of Defence will allow the armed forces and defence civil servants to have a lot more control over the narrative and the conclusions.

But at the same time, it risks being far too limited in its remit to ensure the UK is prepared for war.

A future war would be an all-of-nation effort, requiring all departments of state to be prepared to play their part – something that they have not had to consider since the Cold War years.

In a statement released as part of the defence announcements today, Mr Healey said: "Our government's first duty is to keep the country safe. That's why we will increase defence spending and launch a Strategic Defence Review to ensure we have the capabilities needed to protect the UK now and in the future.

"The review will also set out defence reforms to secure faster procurement and better value for money."

Poland must prepare its soldiers for a "full-scale conflict", says its armed forces chief of staff.

General Wieslaw Kukula said the country must find a balance between army training and border security.

The number of troops on the country's eastern border will increase from 6,000 to 8,000 by August, he said.

"Today, we need to prepare our forces for full-scale conflict, not an asymmetric-type conflict," said General Kukula.

In May, Poland announced details of "East Shield", a $2.5bn programme to beef up defences along its border with Belarus and Russia.

Belarus and China held military drills near the Polish border yesterday.

The border with Belarus has also been a flashpoint since migrants started arriving there in 2021.

Belarus had opened travel agencies in the Middle East offering a new unofficial route into Europe - a move the European Union said was designed to create a crisis.

The size of the Polish armed forces stood at about 190,000 personnel at the end of last year.

Poland plans to increase this to 300,000 troops within a few years.

F-16 fighter jets will be flying in the skies of Ukraine this summer, says US secretary of state Antony Blinken.

The planes are en route to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands right now, he said at the NATO summit in Washington.

An incredibly robust package for Ukraine will be unveiled over the next couple of days, added Mr Blinken.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expected decisions on more F-16 jet deliveries will be made today.

"We are increasing the number of aircraft available to Ukraine," he said.

Norway has already announced at the summit that it will donate six F-16s.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says it is too early to say when Ukraine will become a member of the alliance.

Speaking at the summit in Washington, he said Russia does not pose any military threat against NATO allies, being preoccupied with Ukraine.

The summit will lead to a substantial package for Ukraine, the secretary general said.

Sources have told Reuters that the latest draft of the summit's declaration says NATO will continue to support Ukraine on its "irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership".

By Ivor Bennett,  Moscow correspondent

The Russian media has generally sought to shrug off the NATO summit, playing down signs of unity within the alliance and talking up signs of division.

Much of the focus is on President Biden and the questions he faces over his suitability for office.

His pledge to defend Ukraine and defeat Russia was covered, but in the context that this is a man who is "out of touch with reality", according to the state-run tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets.

The news outlet describes the US leader as "close to senility", claiming he is trying to salvage his "failed presidential campaign".

As for Ukraine's potential path to NATO membership, coverage has emphasised the hurdles Kyiv must overcome.

Comments by Poland's President Andrzej Duda, in particular, that accession can't happen until the conflict ends, were seized upon by the TV talk show 60 Minutes. It described them as a "cold shower" for Zelenskyy.

But the fact there is all this coverage here, I think, betrays a deep concern.

The Kremlin knows President Zelenskyy will come away from this summit with more military aid. The question is how much?

According to an anonymous NATO official quoted by the Reuters news agency yesterday, Russia is suffering "very high" losses, and lacks the munitions and troops for a major offensive.

If true, more weapons to Ukraine could create problems.

On the surface, though, there is little sign of alarm. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov merely said that Moscow will "closely monitor" what comes out of the summit.

Russia sent a fighter jet to escort a Norwegian patrol plane away from Russian airspace over the Barents Sea, the Russian defence ministry says.

There was no violation of the air border by the Norwegian patrol plane, the ministry said.

Russia has reported similar incidents before when its planes have confronted military aircraft from NATO countries.

Interfax reported this morning that Russian jet fighters also conducted drills over the sea and the Kola Peninsula.

It is unclear exactly when each of these incidents occurred.

NATO allies will announce at its summit today a minimum baseline of €40bn (£33.8bn) in funding for Ukraine within the next year, the White House says.

A senior civilian NATO representative will be stationed in Kyiv as part of its bridge to membership, it added.

Meanwhile, Norway has said it will donate six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, daily newspaper Verdens Gang reported, citing the Norwegian prime minister at the summit.

Leaders from NATO's 32 member states are meeting in Washington until tomorrow to mark the 75th anniversary of the alliance, with support for Ukraine at the top of the agenda.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been invited to attend and discuss further support.

By Nicole Johnston , Asia correspondent in Beijing

NATO will appear focused on the Russia-Ukraine war this week, but there is another potential theatre of conflict in its sight - the Indo-Pacific.

NATO leaders understand that stability in the Indo-Pacific is essential to security in Europe and beyond: A war here would ripple across the world.

For that reason, representatives from Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand (called the IP4) are also at the NATO summit.

Secretary-general of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg wrote in Foreign Affairs this week that NATO had entered an era of "enduring competition with China".

The Indo-Pacific is being carved up by alliances and partnerships.

There is the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal between Australia, the UK and the US to counter China's military expansion.

The "Quad" is a security forum between India, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

This year the US held military training exercises with Japan and South Korea.

China's Communist Party feels hemmed in by these blocs. These alliances are taking shape in a region China regards as its own backyard. US influence here is not welcome.

The naval ships of Western countries are sailing through the East China Sea and South China Sea, off the coast of Taiwan and across the Pacific. China claims most of the South China Sea as its own.

The Chinese military is operating on the sea and in the skies close to forces from the US and Australia. There have been close calls. The risk of miscalculation is high.

China is alarmed by the strengthening ties between the IP4 and NATO.

On Monday, Lin Jian, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, accused NATO of "breaching its boundary, expanding its mandate, reaching beyond its defence zone and stoking confrontation".

China's argument has overtones of the rhetoric used by Russia in its justification for launching a war on Ukraine.

Russia blamed NATO's eastward expansion. China compares US alliances in this region as being akin to a "NATO" in Asia.

China is also entangled in the Russia-Ukraine war. Officially it is neutral and calls for peace. But its ongoing trade with Russia allows President Vladimir Putin to continue the war.

The Chinese military has started 11 days of joint drills with Belarus close to the Polish and Ukrainian border, only a fortnight after the Polish president, Andrzej Duda, was in Beijing.

The big question here is what happens in Taiwan. Japan has said the "Ukraine of today may be East Asia of tomorrow".

China is adamant Taiwan will unite with the mainland eventually.

What's unclear is how the myriad of US-led alliances in the Indo-Pacific would respond.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has demanded the immediate release of a British national being held in "deplorable" conditions in Russia.

He branded the sentencing of opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison "absurd".

Mr Kara-Murza, 42, was convicted of treason last year over public remarks critical of the Kremlin.

News broke last week that he was being transferred to a prison hospital and his lawyers had been unable to visit him there since Thursday.

"I am extremely concerned that Vladimir's lawyers are being denied access to him in prison hospital, and that the Russian authorities continue to refuse him consular assistance from the British Embassy," said Mr Lammy.

"Vladimir is being held in deplorable conditions in prison for having the courage to tell the truth about the war in Ukraine.

"His absurd 25-year sentence shows the Kremlin's deep fear that more Russians will know the reality of Putin's illegal war – and is further evidence of the targeted repression of the opposition."

Mr Kara-Murza has rejected the charges against him and likened the proceedings to the show trials under Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

Morning Briefing: Europe Edition

Tuesday briefing.

The fallout from France’s election.

Natasha Frost

By Natasha Frost

A pile of bicycles and a small fire in the street.

France faces complicated months ahead

French voters may have rejected the far right in legislative elections on Sunday, but they now face a Parliament that is split and has an unclear path to a workable government, with an insurgent left in first place but still far short of holding power. These maps show how France voted .

It will take painstaking negotiations to eventually yield a viable government, my colleague Roger Cohen writes. France does not have a culture of such compromise, and the muddle could take months to sort out . President Emmanuel Macron asked his prime minister yesterday to remain in office “for the moment” to “assure the stability of the country.”

The New Popular Front, a left-wing alliance, has demanded that Macron ask it to form a government, saying it would soon put forward its choice for prime minister. Yet it is 100 seats short of a workable majority, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the combative left-wing leader, said he would not negotiate with potential coalition partners nor adjust the alliance’s program.

Possible scenarios: Macron could appoint a prime minister from outside his party and share power, but he has labeled the far-left and far-right parties too “extreme,” and other political groups have shown little appetite for working with him. Here’s more on what could come next .

Biden pushed back on dropping out of the race

President Biden made an aggressive attempt yesterday to dispel concerns that a broad range of Democrats have expressed about his re-election campaign. By the afternoon, he had called into a widely watched morning news program, sent a defiant letter to Democratic members of Congress and, during a call with fund-raisers, previewed his plan to attack Donald Trump.

“If any of these guys don’t think I should run, run against me,” he said, hitting back at his critics. “Go ahead, announce for president. Challenge me at the convention.”

Biden faces crumbling support from Democratic lawmakers and mounting fears of a rout by Donald Trump in November. He is expected to hold a news conference, most likely on Thursday, after he finishes hosting a NATO summit in Washington.

Health concerns: An expert on Parkinson’s disease visited the White House eight times from last summer to this spring, according to official visitor logs. The White House did not specify whether the expert was there to consult about Biden but said that the president was not being treated for Parkinson’s.

Republicans: Trump backed a draft Republican platform that softens the party’s position on abortion but is more nationalistic and protectionist.

A children’s hospital was bombed in Ukraine

Moscow rained missiles across Ukraine yesterday, destroying the country’s largest children’s hospital . Hundreds raced to the scene to help in a desperate search for survivors. One doctor and another adult were killed and at least 10 more people were injured, including seven children, local officials said. At least three children were pulled from the rubble, Ukraine’s emergency services agency said.

Across the country, at least 38 people were killed in the bombings, including 27 in Kyiv, and more than 100 were injured, officials said. The Ukrainian Air Force said it had shot down 30 of the 38 missiles launched during the attack. The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today to address the strikes.

Strikes on health care: The strikes highlighted the growing number of deadly attacks by Russia on Ukrainian medical facilities, vehicles and workers.

MORNING READ

Doreen Brodhead checked into a motel room in Kingston, N.Y., one night last November. With her was Stephen Miller, a former doctor who had served time in prison, whom she had met online. The next morning, her body was found on the bed next to a note. A gas canister was nearby, and Miller was gone.

Brodhead had lived with chronic pain for decades, and Miller had helped her die. But was he, as he claimed, an angel of mercy or, as prosecutors called him, an angel of death ?

The best books of the 21st century.

The New York Times Book Review asked hundreds of literary luminaries to name the 10 best books published since Jan. 1, 2000. The interpretation of “best” was left open — for some, this simply meant “favorite.” For others, it meant books that would endure for generations.

Stephen King took part in our poll. So did Claudia Rankine, James Patterson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Elin Hilderbrand, Roxane Gay, Marlon James, Sarah MacLean, Min Jin Lee and Jonathan Lethem. ( Take a peek at their ballots .)

We’ll be publishing the list over the course of this week, starting with those ranked 81st to 100th .
