Dave Alvin Reinvents Himself on Tour with Jimmie Dale Gilmore

Don Wilcock

On casual reflection, the average roots music fan would not think of Dave Alvin as an intellectual. Dave began his career with brother Phil as co-founders of blues-rocking band The Blasters in 1979. “There’s still people who define me as being the snot-nosed loud mouth goofball that was the guitar player in the Blasters,” he says today.

Dave is currently on tour with Jimmie Dale Gilmore of Flatlanders fame. They will release their second album together in October, but currently have a single out called “Borderland.”

“ We’re still making the album,” says Dave. “The album is almost done. We’re going back in October to finish it. But (the label) wanted to put something out, and that was the song they considered the most commercial, the Americana feel.”

Commercial is not a label Dave or I would immediately use to describe his music. Organic is his descriptor. We got into that when I asked him what kind of rules he has about not having rules?

“It may sound corny,” he shot back.

Go ahead, I said. You have my permission.

“Let me use a terrible word, but it’s applicable; the best word I can come up with is it’s organic.”

He’s right, I told him. That’s a groaner.

“It’s a groaner, but it’s organic.”

I asked him to define organic.

“That it comes from our roots. That it’s not diluted. I’ll define it this way. I never made a disco record.”

Thank you, Jesus!

“Yeah. I’ve done a lot of things in my career that have made people cock their heads like puppies. ‘What’s he doing?’  But what it really boils down to is all I’m doing on guitar is playing Lightnin’ Hopkins. It’s just different situations, and that’s been a constant. So, my attitude has always been to take what limited skills I have and see where I can go with it because I’m not Django Reinhardt. I’m not Lonnie Johnson as a guitar player. I’m me, and look, how far can we take this, and how many different situations can we put this into?”

Dave has recorded with such diverse artists as Bobby Rush, Tom Waits, John Mellencamp, Little Milton, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and The Knitters. His songs have been recorded by Los Lobos, Dwight Yoakam, James McMurtry, Buckwheat Zydeco, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and Marshall Crenshaw.

Does he think his greatest talent is as a lyricist?

“Yeah, there’s a zillion guitar players in the world. Songwriters are a little rarer. Not as rare as they used to be, but they are a little rarer. Guitar players? yeah. I’m a good guitar player. I’m ok. That’s all you need to be.”

I’m going to see him and Jimmie.

“Well, bring earplugs.” (Laugh)

Are they that loud?

“It isn’t quite that loud, but I get my point across.”

Well, I’ve already lost my hearing, I tell him, but it doesn’t matter. He laughs. At 79, I have tinnitus. I jokingly tell him I can’t tell the difference between what they’re playing and what I’m hearing inside my head.

But I digress. About Dave’s being an intellectual.

In 2000, Dave won a Grammy for Public Domain: Songs From the Wild Land , a collection of traditional folk and blues classics. He’s written several books of poetry, and The Los Angeles Times wrote him up for a reunion he had with Gerald Locklin, his Cal State Long Beach professor.

“Gerald Locklin was the first teacher kind of person who thought I might have some sort of brain. Not a lot, but some sort of brain. At one point he was the most published poet in the United States because he was the king of the small presses. That’s when there used to be a ton of small press magazines. He was an amazing teacher, a great poet and a good friend, and he sort of opened my eyes to what poetry is capable of doing, non-traditional poetry. Let’s put it that way.”

John Pennerstaff in the article said that Dave Alvin learned to write poetic songs not from listening to blues heroes like Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and Marty Robbins but from Locklin, and specifically “Dry River.”

I fell in love with a woman, but she did not love me Well, I fell in love with you baby, but you did not love me Now I’m as dry as that old river, and I’m as dead as those old trees Someday it’s gonna rain, someday it’s gonna pour Someday this old heart of mine’s gonna fall in love once more Someday it’s gonna rain, someday it’s gonna pour Someday this old dry river, it won’t be dry anymore

“It’s funny. Locklin besides being a poetry teacher also taught history of English literature. We got drunk one night ’cause there was a bar on campus. We had become close friends, and he had me teach the class because he was too drunk to teach it. (Chuckle)

“So, you can imagine what kind of guy he was. I taught the class on the English pamphleteers Addison and Steele from the early 18 th century. He looked at me and said, ‘I don’t think I can do this tonight,’ and he hands me his book, and it was all this information right there. ‘Ok, tonight we’re doing Addison and Steel.’ I was pretty sauced myself.

“Jerry was a great guy, a great teacher. Taking the imagery of offbeat poetry that I was attracted to whether it was by Tchaikovsky or Gerald Locklin, or even prose writers like Ramond Chandler and people like that, and if I can put that in song, that’s great. So, that’s what I’ve tried to do my whole career. That’s why I’m stubborn.

“They probably have courses now in schools for songwriting, but you really learn on your own, and everybody does it different, blah, blah, blah. But yeah, what I learned growing up listening to old blues records was the same lesson that my brother Phil and I learned hanging around Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker as kids which is you gotta write your own blues.

dave alvin on tour

“The thing as a songwriter I learned from him – there was a thing my brother Phil could imitate Big Joe Turner early on and he still can, or he could until his recent health issues, but he sang first like Big Joe, and when my brother was 15 or 16 years old, Big Joe took him aside and told him ‘Look, do me a favor quit embarrassing yourself, quit embarrassing me and find your own way to sing,’ and that lesson sunk in to both my brother and me.

“(A song) could be a poem disguised as a song, complete with a drum solo, but not. I learned songwriting because all songwriters are self-taught whether you’re Robert Johnson or Hank Williams or Lennon and McCartney. It doesn’t matter if you’re self-taught.

“They probably have courses now in schools for songwriting, but you really learn on your own, and everybody does it differently, blah, blah, blah. But yeah, what I learned growing up listening to old blues records was the same lesson that my brother Phil and I learned hanging around Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker as kids, which is you gotta write your own blues.”

Dave has chemistry with Jimmie Dale Gilmore like he does with Locklin. “Jimmy’s had an interesting life, and he’s done a lot of things besides music, you know, that are odd and interesting and intriguing, but then, later in life in his 40s, he got some major label push where they just put a lot of promotion, this, that and the other into him and his music and his career.”

The Flatlanders came out in the ’70s, and it was 20 years before anybody figured out how good it was.

“Yeah, but he got a major label push in the ’90s to make him into a star, make him not the Flatlanders, him through Elektra Records, and that kind of stuff can mess with your brain. And I’ve had a lot of friends that have gone down that route that no longer play music, because it messed with their brain.

“There are demands placed on you that you feel, both financial and ‘gee, is this record gonna make up for the fact that they spent half a million dollars to promote it?’ So, Jimmy kinda went through that. He got through it, and in his brain he retired from music.

“He didn’t officially retire, but he wasn’t gonna be some gigantic star. He wasn’t gonna be a big country star or whatever star. And yeah, his attitude now is, I don’t give a fuck. I’ll do whatever I want, you know? And that always has been my attitude. So, our first album we did together has everything from a Youngbloods song ‘Let’s Get Together’ to a Lightnin’ Hopkins number to a Memphis Jug Band number. It just doesn’t matter. It’s like whatever we feel like doing, we’re gonna do it.”

Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore Set New Album, ‘Texicali,’ Tour

dave alvin on tour

Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (Photo: Leslie Campbell; used with permission)

Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore have announced the June 21, 2024, release of TexiCali , a new studio album, via Yep Roc Records. Listen to two tracks of the tracks below. The Grammy-winning Alvin, who first came to prominence in the Los Angeles band the Blasters, and Grammy nominee Gilmore, a founding member of West Texas’ country trio the Flatlanders, first joined together in 2017 for what they thought was a one-off tour, that instead turned into the collaborative debut album Downey To Lubbock .

TexiCali can be pre-ordered in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here . The pair have also expanded their tour; see the itinerary below.

Says a press release, “Behind blistering blues licks, Alvin and Gilmore recount the road that’s brought them to TexiCali from wild nights at Houston’s dearly-departed Allen Park Inn to fateful run-ins with clueless record company men and harrowing drives down one way streets.”

The 11 tracks on TexiCali , the announcement continues, “double as a road trip across Alvin and Gilmore’s beloved home states and the memories within, honoring shared musical influences, friends gone too soon and all they’ve endured along the way. Two of Americana’s most celebrated storytellers, the pair now elevate their partnership from touring to recording to songwriting, with TexiCali incorporating more original work and collaborations than ever before. Together they reflect on experiences like touring the country via train with Roots on the Rails , working with contemporaries like Terry Allen and Butch Hancock, and formative shows from blues legends like Brownie McGhee at Los Angeles’ Ash Grove (frequented by both Dave and Jimmie, unbeknownst to them at the time).”

Listen to “We’re Still Here”

Of “Southwest Chief,” a song about touring via the rails, Alvin began writing the track years ago with New England songwriter Bill Morrissey, and completed it after Morrissey’s passing: “Remembering my friend, Bill Morrissey / we were gonna write a song but that never came to be,” sings Alvin, backed by Gilmore on harmonica.

Americana legends Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore team up at Moe’s Alley

W e are so spoiled with live music in this town. On any given night, it can be a dilemma picking between what show to go see. Sometimes, however, you get twice as much for your money, and the choice is simple. Case in point: Americana legends Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore play Moe’s Alley this Saturday to celebrate their new record, “TexiCali.”

I spoke with both of them earlier this week and chatted about how they began playing together after being mutual admirers of each other’s music for years. They originally started with a few gigs as an acoustic duo.

“We had gotten to be friends a long time ago,” Jimmie said, “playing reviews on the same shows. We both liked hearing each other, and we’re both blues & R&B fans.” They also have strong country roots with Jimmie being a native Texan and Dave with his California roots and growing up just a couple of hours south of Bakersfield.

“Jimmie’s booking agent thought we’d be good together,” Dave said. “We did a few gigs in Texas, then Arizona, and then off to California and Colorado, just the two of us. And in our younger days, Jimmie and I both hung out at this (legendary) club in LA called The Ashgrove, listening to people like Lightnin’ Hopkins. We didn’t even know we shared that until we started the first tour.” Dave laughed and added, “I said, ‘Well, if you’re an Ashgrove guy, then we’ve got something in common.’” Once they hit the road, “it was pretty early on that I realized we should make a record together.”

Jimmie added, “and in addition to being one of THE great guitar players. Dave is also a producer and arranger who can juggle a lot all at once. He just had a vision of us recording together.”

Fun fact: Their 2018 release “Downey to Lubbock” and the new record, the absolutely stellar “TexiCali,” both namecheck their geographic backgrounds. Dave is from Downey, California. Jimmie is from Lubbock, Texas. And both are road trips, hitting a variety of musical styles and literal locations with songs old and new from both artists.

The first record was done after the acoustic tour. Dave brought in “a lot of friends and A-lister musicians to play because we didn’t know what was going to happen,” Jimmie said. “But there’s nothing wrong with A-listers,” he chuckled. “TexiCali,” the new release, was recorded with a “road band” that’s been touring with them. “It’s just a giant treat for me, riding on top of a giant ensemble that covers everything. This small band can handle just about any kind of genre, and they can take all the curves that Dave throws at them.”

Being an artist under the banner of “Americana” also gives them the freedom to explore different styles. “Variety is frowned on a lot in contemporary music,” Dave said. “With blues, pop or country, they want to keep you in a genre that’s easy to market.” Jimmie added, “Dave also has this affiliation with a really great record company (Yep Roc Records), and they’ve been so good about granting him complete freedom for all his projects with no interference.”

Dave added, “I also think Jimmie and I have been extremely blessed in that that we’ve both had fans who’ve stuck with us through all the changes. People will go with us through a lot of our musical moods because a good song can be done a million different ways. I mean how many times did Duke Ellington record ‘Sophisticated Lady’ or John Coltrane redo ‘Impressions?’ Heck, even when Dylan plugged in at Newport, it was still the same guy!”

Michael Gaither is a performing songwriter, DJ at KPIG radio, and in a previous life was also a writer for The Santa Cruz Sentinel.

A few weeks before the Tour de France , I got to head to Italy and hit the Dolomites on a then-unreleased bike. Pinarello had invited me over to check out the new Dogma F, a bike that, for the most part, I thoroughly liked. If you want to read the review and see the video, then click here .

Since then, the new bike has been in use by Pinarello’s long-time sponsored squad, Ineos Grenadiers.

It’s not had as much limelight as previous Pinarello Dogmas were used to, back in the day when Ineos and Sky were in their pomp.

It’s been a bike under the team that’s helped them to fight for stage wins (but not succeed so far), and as of writing this sixth place on general classification.

Instead it’s been another Italian bike manufacturing powerhouse (or once Italian, as an Emirate conglomerate now owns it) that’s crossed the line first, Colnago and their race bike, the V4RS. This is another bike I tested on its launch, but didn’t like as much as the Dogma. Heck, what do I know, though?

dave alvin on tour

What can you expect in this video? Well, the Pinarello Dogma F is a premium race bike from a rider who, if we believe him, has his last days as a GC contender behind him.

And if we go by his Tour results, we can certainly believe him. That’s right, we got hold of Geraint Thomas’ Pinarello Dogma.

dave alvin on tour

Apart from his first three years as a pro with the Barloworld team, Geraint Thomas has solely used Pinarello bikes throughout his 18-year career. He’s seen the bikes go from (and this is a personal opinion) ugly, curvy monstrosities to today’s much more pleasing race bikes.

NFL Matchups: All-Time Series History Between The Raiders And The New Orleans Saints

Bob rose | jul 20, 2024.

Oct 30, 2022; New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan (94) hits Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) as he throws

  • New Orleans Saints
  • Las Vegas Raiders

Week 17 of the 2024-25 NFL season will contain the New Orleans Saints hosting the Las Vegas Raiders in the next-to-last regular season game for both teams. By this point of the year, the postseason fate of both teams should be all but decided.

Neither squad is favored by odds makers to make the 2025 playoffs. New Orleans is coming off a 9-8 season, their third straight year without a playoff berth. The Raiders, seemingly in an annual rebuild, are coming off an 8-9 finish after firing coach Josh McDaniels at mid-season. This franchise has just two postseason trips over the last 22 seasons.

It will be just the 16th all-time meeting between the Saints and a Raiders franchise that has had homes in Oakland (twice), Los Angeles, and now Las Vegas. These teams last met during the 2022 season. That game was in New Orleans, site of this year's matchup.

Saints vs. Raiders Series History

• 7-7-1 all-time record • 4-3 home.

Oakland Raiders receiver Cliff Branch (21) breaks away for a long touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in a 1979 game

The first meeting between these teams took place one year after the AFL-NFL merger. New Orleans hosted the Oakland Raiders at mid-season at mid-season during the 1971 campaign in Tulane Stadium. The Saints actually outgained the Raiders on the day by over 130 yards. However, it took two fourth quarter touchdowns, with the last a touchdown pass from QB Edd Hargett to WR Dave Parks, for the Saints to salvage a 21-21 tie.

The next matchup between these teams was during the 1975 season. This time in Oakland, the Saints were destroyed by a 48-10 score on a day where the Raiders rolled up 523 total yards and 260 on the ground against only 140 yards from New Orleans. It was the first of three straight wins by the Raiders over the Saints in this series. The second of the three was one of the more infuriating losses in Saints franchise history.

Late in the 1979 season, the Saints hosted the Raiders in the Superdome on Monday Night Football. New Orleans exploded for four touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 28-7 lead. They'd extend that lead to 35-14 in the third quarter with an interception return for a touchdown from LB Ken Bordelon. After that, everything fell apart.

The Saints got 128 yards rushing and a score from RB Chuck Muncie along with 106 yards receiving and two scores from RB Tony Galbreath that night. It wasn't enough. Raiders QB Ken Stabler threw for 295 yards and Cliff Branch accounted for 126 yards receiving as Oakland come roaring back in the fourth quarter for a 42-35 win. Eventually finishing the year at 8-8, the loss kept the Saints from their first winning record in franchise history.

Sep 11, 2016; New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (9) prepares to take a snap against the Oakland Raiders

That would be the last meeting between New Orleans and the Oakland Raiders for 15 years. When next these teams met, the Los Angeles Raiders beat New Orleans in L.A. by a 23-13 score in 1985. In 1988, New Orleans hosted those Los Angeles Raiders and dominated their way to a 20-6 win. The Saints got 109 rushing yards from RB Craig Heyward and 52 more from Dalton Hilliard in the victory.

New Orleans next hosted the Los Angeles Raiders in the next-to-last week of the 1991 season. The Saints took a decisive 27-0 win. New Orleans got 320 yards passing from QB Bobby Hebert and 127 yards receiving from WR Quinn Early. Meanwhile, the suffocating Saints defense held Los Angeles to just 117 yards of total offense while recording four sacks and returning an interception for a touchdown.

The last meeting between the Los Angeles Raiders and Saints took place in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1994. Raiders QB Jeff Hostetler outdueled Saints QB Jim Everett that afternoon for a 24-19 Los Angeles win. The Raiders would re-relocate to Oakland after that season. They'd next host the Saints in 1997, a 13-10 New Orleans win.

Oakland made their next appearance in New Orleans during the 2000 campaign. Both squads came into the contest with good records and would go on to win their division, but the Raiders took this one by a 31-22 score. The Saints lost QB Jeff Blake to a broken foot in the first quarter. Backup Aaron Brooks would guide the team for the rest of the year, leading New Orleans to their first playoff win in franchise history.

Brooks and WR Joe Horn led the Saints to a 31-26 win over the Raiders in Oakland in 2004. New Orleans next hosted the Raiders in 2008. Quarterback Drew Brees peppered the Oakland defense for 320 yards and three scores in a 34-3 dismantling.

Brees led his Saints to a 38-17 win in Oakland during the 2012 season, a three-game winning streak in the series that matched the Raiders for the longest by either team. The Raiders were coached that day by Dennis Allen, a former and future Saints defensive coach now in his third year as head coach of New Orleans.

Oct 30, 2022; New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara (41) looks to evade Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Divine Deablo (5)

Oakland next traveled to New Orleans for a showdown in the 2016 season opener. The game was a shootout, with both teams combining for 993 yards of total offense and 69 points. Drew Brees threw for yards 423 yards and four scores, including a 98-yard touchdown to WR Brandin Cooks that set a franchise record.

Cooks and WR Willie Snead combined for 15 catches and 315 of those yards. Not to be outdone, Raiders QB Derek Carr threw for 319 yards of his own. A touchdown pass by Carr in the final minute of the game propelled the Raiders to a 35-34 shootout victory.

After the 2019 season, the Raiders would relocate again, this time to Las Vegas. For their first game in their new building, Las Vegas would host the Saints on Monday Night Football in the second game of the 2020 season. While Brees threw for 312 yards, Carr countered with 284 yards and three scores of his own in a 34-24 win for the Raiders.

These teams last met during the 2022 season in New Orleans, Dennis Allen's first year as head coach since being fired by Oakland in 2014. The Saints defense dominated the game in a 24-0 win, holding the Raiders to just 183 total yards while sacking Derek Carr four times. New Orleans RB Alvin Kamara provided all the offense the team would need, rushing for 62 yards and catching nine passes for 96 yards while scoring all three of the game's touchdowns.

After nine years as quarterback of the Raiders, Derek Carr is now in his second season with the Saints. Undoubtedly, Carr and Dennis Allen will want to show their former team that they made a mistake when moving on from them. More importantly for the Saints, Allen and Carr need to cement their futures with their current franchise.
