Grand Turk Whale Watching
Every year, humpback whales migrate from the northern Atlantic to the warmer northern Caribbean waters to give birth and to mate.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are situated on an underwater plateau rises 11,000 feet (3,350 meters) from the surrounding ocean floor. Much of this extensive subterranean shelf is relatively shallow, but a deep channel splits this plateau and separates the Turks Islands from the Caicos Islands. Whales are funneled through this passage and consequently migrate quite close to Grand Turk.
Whale Watching Tours
Quite a few local businesses offer whale watching tours. Most of these trips are afternoon excursions, but custom tours can easily be arranged.
Although not guaranteed, it’s possible that you’ll get the opportunity to snorkel with the whales, and we highly recommend that you take advantage of the chance if possible.
One truly impressive aspect of a snorkeling encounter with humpback whales isn't even seeing one of the giant marine mammals, it’s simply experiencing the deep blue ocean from under the surface.
On the boat, the deep Atlantic water off of Grand Turk appears a dark navy blue, yet it takes on an incredibly vibrant blue and lighter shade when underwater as the sunlight refracts and reflects. On sunny days, the effect is even greater, with distinct rays piercing the depths.
- Humpback whales are wild animals and thus may be unpredictable. Do not chase or closely approach whales.
- Wear snorkeling vests when in the water.
- As should be the practice with all animals, do not harass or disturb the whales.
Whale Watching Adventure - Seasonal
Start your 3 hour whale watching adventure by boarding a beautiful designed whale watching vessel located on a white sandy beach. The boat has an elevated fly-bridge, giving him a higher vantage point and utilizes binoculars increasing the possibility of whale sightings. Once whales are located, the boat will head out to where they are and observe them from a distance, being careful not to cut them off, startle them or disrupt them, while giving you a front row seat to the greatest show on earth. Sometimes the whales will approach the boat and hang around for a while. Humpbacks are very acrobatic, often you can see them breaching high out of the water and then slapping the water as they come back down. Sometimes they twirl around while breaching. Grand Turk and the surrounding cays have experienced plenty of mom and calf encounters during whale season. You can listen to the sound of a whale song through a hydrophone. The onboard whale expert will answer any questions you may have.
- The minimum age to attend this tour is 6 years old.
- Maximum weight is 300 lbs.
- A 5-10 minute walk along the sand is required to board the boat by ladder at the beach.
- Guests with head, neck and back problems, pregnant women, heart conditions are not permitted.
- While whale sightings are very common and the captain tries his/her best to find them, it cannot be guaranteed that you will see them on your excursion.
- Complimentary bottled water and rum punch are included.
- Boarding area is from the beach. Guests might need to enter the water in order to board.

It is the annual migration of humpback whales that pass by here on their way to their winter breeding grounds in the Dominican Republic. These graceful and majestic giants are a wonder to behold, and come close by all of our islands.
The best viewing is in the Columbus Passage that separates Grand Turk and Salt Cay from the rest of our islands. Tour operators in Grand Turk and Salt Cay offer whale watching trips so contact them directly for more information. Hotel accommodations are available on both islands, too.
But even the scuba and snorkel operators in Provo see the whales every year as they gently surface and glide through the waters. Observing the humpbacks is reason enough to pay us a visit between December and February, which is when they visit us.

Alaska jewel: hubbard glacier day, hubbard glacier explorer, alaska jewel: day 1, alaska jewel: embarkation, grand turk: whale watching.
I normally wouldn’t book a whale watching tour in Grand Turk. When there is a beach right off of the ship, that’s what I normally do. But this time I had a lot of onboard credit to use so I did the beach in the morning and booked the Whale Watching Adventure in the afternoon. The tour cost $135 at the time I went on it. My excursion ticket was delivered to my cabin on the second day of the cruise.
After you come off of the pier in Grand Turk and walk through the duty free shop, you will see all of the excursion kiosks.
My ticket specified booth #4. This is where you check in, sign a waiver, and get a bracelet indicating you are on this tour.
We were all given orange bracelets.
It would’ve been good information to know we were going to have to walk half a mile through the sand to our boat. The other whale watching excursions I’ve been on have left from a pier.
At this point you have to take your shoes off and climb that ladder.
I definitely wanted a window seat so I could have a good view of the whales when they were on my side…if they were ever on my side. The only one available was row two on the starboard side.
Quite a few people are still in line to board.
And we are heading out.
We have two marine biologists on board.
First we had to learn how to put on a life vest.
They have water for everyone in the ice chest.
That is the bathroom. They warned us that it’s a rough ride in the bathroom. Nobody went down there other than this one crew member.
The ride out there was rough. One person had to throw up in a plastic bag. Everyone in the front of the boat got soaked. Here’s a sample of it.
On the way out we had to stop for a recovery mission.
Finally we got to whale watching. The whales were on the other side of the boat the whole time. They never spun the boat around even though they told us they would try to allow both sides to see them. So what I got is what I could capture with both arms stretched out as high as I could.
It was a mother and a baby that we watched–mostly the baby. Here are the highlights:
On the way back they played music and poured rum punch.
The ships are Holland America’s Rotterdam and Carnival Magic.
All of the not so fun things we got to do on our way here, we got to do again in reverse.
I stopped at the foot washing area by Margaritaville.
That was not my favorite excursion. I only booked it because I had a lot of onboard credit this cruise. The water was extremely rough. If you do it I would say be prepared to get wet and sandy. I would recommend just enjoying the free beach. Do whale watching when you’re in Cabo or Alaska.
