Gulf Coast Records is proud to announce the November 17 release of Blood Brothers Live in Canada, an album which perfectly captures all the excitement and blues/rock energy created by the dynamic duo of guitarists Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia on their recent Blood Brothers Tour, featured in an intimate setting that transports listeners to front row seats for all the action. Blood Brothers Live in Canada was recorded at Blue Frog Studios, White Rock, British Columbia, Canada, on May 19 and 20, 2023. The new album was produced by Mike Zito and mastered by Kid Andersen.    “Our shows in White Rock were full of energy and fire,” Mike Zito says about the recording. “Blue Frog Studios set an exceptional vibe for the task at hand. Albert and the band were seriously on that night; I felt really good about it.” Adds Albert Castiglia: “The stars were aligned that night in White Rock: the perfect room, perfect acoustics, an amazing audience and incendiary playing by everyone in the band. We’ve had a lot of shows like that, but very few have been captured on tape. It had to be shared with the world. It was a night to remember!”

The band for those nights consisted of Mike Zito - vocals/guitars; Albert Castiglia - vocals/guitars; Doug Byrkit - bass guitar; Matt Johnson - drums/percussion; Ephraim Lowell - drums/percussion; andLewis Stephens - piano/organ.

The track listing for Blood Brothers Live in Canada album includes 10 live versions of songs that were originally included on the duo’s Blood Brothers studio album released to great international critical acclaim on Gulf Coast Records. That disc was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith and proceeded to top both the Billboard and iTunes blues charts after its release in March, 2023.  Augmenting  those tracks are searing live covers of Zito’s “Gone to Texas,” the title track of his 2013 CD released on Ruf Records; and a blistering take on the Neil Young Classic, “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which closes the new album out in grand style.

Gulf Coast Records announces a March 17 release date for one of the most-anticipated albums of the year, the upcoming Blood Brothers disc featuring multi-Blues Music Award-winners Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia. The duo concluded a highly-successful string of “Blood Brothers” shows in the spring/summer of 2022 with new tour dates already announced beginning in February and running through the summer, culminating with a special appearance at the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas in September. Blood Brothers was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith and recorded at Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana. “Sweet Mama,” the album’s first single/video, drops February 10th.

"This album was a blast to make and I am even more excited to take this music out on the road and perform for the people,” says Mike Zito. “It's just a bit more complex with an overall band dynamic that I think sets apart from what Albert and I normally do."

“The making of this album was a ‘brotherhood’ in every sense of the word,” adds Albert Castiglia. “The production team of Josh Smith and Joe Bonamassa, along with Mike and I created something incredibly special. I hope our fans enjoy this collaboration as much as we did.”

Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia are true “Blood Brothers” in life and in the music they create both individually and collectively, joining forces in a collaborative effort of songwriting and performances to create a total listening experience greater than the sum of its parts.  Added to that process are the talents of producers Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, who brought fresh ideas to the recording sessions, pushing Mike and Albert creatively and musically to present their best work to date.

“Mike and Albert have a special chemistry together when they plug in and play that few have. They finish each other's sentences musically,” award-winning guitarist Joe Bonamassa said about the sessions. “Great tunes, great people, great hang! What's not to like? It was an honor to be involved in this project."

For the Blood Brothers album, Mike Zito: vocals/guitars; Albert Castiglia: vocals/guitars – brought together their two powerhouse bands, featuring Matt Johnson: drums; Ephraim Lowell: drums; Doug Byrkit: bass; Lewis Stephens: piano/organ.  Josh Smith provided his additional talents on guitar to the sound, and Joe Bonamassa stepped up to be featured on the new song, “A Thousand Heartaches.”

"Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia have done something special,” added co-producer Josh Smith. “They have both found their musical confidante. Most solo artists never even look - let alone find - theirs. They have brought together a real ‘band’ using members of each's solo acts. The sum of all these parts added with a tremendous effort to both write and perform the strongest record of their respective careers has paid off in a special album. Blood Brothers indeed! Joe and I are proud that these brothers trusted our partnership to produce this special album!"

Of the many insights into the songs on Blood Brothers, Mike Zito offered these two about “‘In My Soul’ and “One Step Ahead of the Blues”: “In the summer of 2022, my wife Laura was diagnosed with cancer. It was a surreal shock. Albert suggested I write songs about how I felt, but I said no. I just couldn't bring myself to that place yet. ‘In My Soul’ is the only song that came out of what I was feeling at that time. I didn't think about it or analyze it, I just started singing.

“For ‘One Step Ahead of the Blues’: I am a JJ Cale fanatic. I love his voice and his style. Although JJ did not write this song, his recording has always been on my playlist. It just fits this band and album with Albert. It turned into a great duet that makes for a strong bond.”

Albert Castiglia ventured inspirations for “A Thousand Heartaches” and “Tooth and Nail”:   “In March of 2022, while on tour in Delaware with The Blood Brothers, Mike asked me to write a ballad for the new album, because we were well-stocked with up tempo numbers and needed to change the pace a little. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to write an unrequited love song like ‘Bell Bottom Blues’ by Derek & The Dominos or ‘We’ve Got Tonight’ by Bob Seger. I’ve been through unreciprocated and forbidden love in my life, but never had the songwriting chops to express how I felt in the midst of it. Most of my songs of love gone bad or love never meant to be usually had me coming off as bitter. I wanted to change that, dig into my past and write something that had me taking the high road and coming off a little more dignified.  I think my songwriting has come a long way and ‘A Thousand Heartaches’ is a result of that progression.

“And when Tinsley Ellis writes a song for you, you listen! Tinsley came to our Blood Brothers show in Atlanta last summer and told us he had a few songs that he had written for us. ‘Tooth and Nail’ grabbed my attention right away. It has all the elements that appeal to a blues-rock guy who grew up in Florida. To me, it’s the ultimate southern rock, Florida/Georgia blues tune. It’s signature Tinsley. It was an honor to sing and play on this one.”

THE BLOOD BROTHERS reunite for U.S. tour and 'Crimes' reissue

The Blood Brothers live '00s , Nick Barnett

A decade on from their last round of reunion dates, Seattle-formed post-hardcore eccentrics the Blood Brothers have announced they're getting back together for a U.S. tour, which celebrates an upcoming vinyl reissue of their fourth full-length release, Crimes .

After teasing something being on the horizon in an Instagram post yesterday (May 15th), the band have now formally announced their plans to hit stages coast to coast throughout November and December.

The show poster is marked with "Everything will be just awful when we're around," a line taken from "The Shame" off 2003's Ross Robinson -produced …Burn, Piano Island Burn , though the upcoming dates coincide with the October 4th reissue of the following year's Crimes , which was produced by John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Ceremony)

"As we've been putting together the 20th anniversary reissue of Crimes , what I'm struck by most listening back is the energy," vocalist Jordan Blilie commented in a press statement.

"It feels both feral and weirdly focused, like whatever chemistry we'd been tinkering with had finally crystallized. It was on stage, though, where that energy reached its most joyful, reckless, collective state. It's an experience that never really goes away, and one we wanted to share again. So, we'll be playing a handful of shows this fall. We hope to see you there."

As with last year's BPIB repress, the 20th anniversary edition of Crimes is being presented as a double-vinyl release that now includes b-sides, and a booklet featuring liner notes and era-specific photos. You can pre-order the album here , via Epitaph Records.

The Blood Brothers initially played from the late Nineties to 2007, but reunited for a run of dates in 2014. Band members went on to perform in Past Lives, Head Wound City, Jaguar Love, Fleet Foxes and more.

WHAT IS BLOOD BROTHERS THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers . Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.

It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).

The superb score includes Bright New Day , Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True .

The Blood Brothers Reunite for 2024 Tour with Two Los Angeles Dates at The Belasco

The Blood Brothers will perform at The Belasco in Los Angeles on Nov. 7 and 8, and at the Observatory in Orange County on Nov. 6.

The Blood Brothers at The Observatory OC by Monique Hernandez

The Blood Brothers have reunited for a 2024 Fall tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their iconic album, Crimes . The run of US show dates will be their first in 10 years and will see The Blood Brothers perform two shows in Los Angeles at The Belasco on Nov. 7 and 8, a show at the Observatory in Orange County on Nov. 6, and more tour dates in cities like Seattle, New York, Chicago, and more.

The Blood Brothers will release a limited vinyl reissue of Crimes on October 4.

Blood Brothers incite a crowd-surfing frenzy at the Observatory Santa Ana

On the occasion, vocalist  Jordan Blilie  muses: “ As we’ve been putting together the 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Crimes’, what I’m struck by most listening back is the energy. It feels both feral and weirdly focused, like whatever chemistry we’d been tinkering with had finally crystallized. It was on stage, though, where that energy reached its most joyful, reckless, collective state. It’s an experience that never really goes away, and one we wanted to share again. So, we’ll be playing a handful of shows this fall. We hope to see you there. ”

the blood brothers tour

The Blood Brothers were a band known for their never-ending tours which took them for up to several years on the road to promote each of their albums. Their live shows were completely explosive as it can be seen on every live video on YouTube like this 2003 Colorado show in which they don´t stop interacting with the audience, jumping around and playing killer songs at the same time.

Hiatus And Reunion

After the band dismembered on 2007 after ten years of non-stop activity , they reunited for a full tour to play old-time songs as well as brand new classics on 2014. The results of that tour were a massive acclaim since the spot left vacant by them and other bands like At the Drive-In were not filled with any other newer act.

Fans were anxious and expecting they would come out with brand new material, but we will have to wait for that to happen if ever.

This incredible in-depth interview made by our pals at noisey.com with Jordan Billie explains from the sight of another fan just how important it is for the music itself that bands like The Blood Brothers exist.

The Blood Brothers Band

Where To Find Them

They are no longer active, but the music remains, the music always remains! Their legacy can be enjoyed on other acts but most importantly, they have never stopped making music with other formations like Head Wound City, the super band still active today, Jaguar Love featuring both Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato and Neon Blonde featuring Whitney and drummer Mark Gajadhar.

Morgan Henderson is a little more difficult to track since he´s been up to so much lately, but his work with the Fleet Foxes in 2011 is to me some of his best to this date.

As for the band itself, all albums, highlights, interviews and main tracks both recorded and live can be found on YouTube . Also, Spotify is a great way to find their music and take it everywhere you go with you.

All five albums are uploaded in excellent quality and if you´re a premium member you can download them to your phone, tablet, computer or old-school MP3 player

to listen to these Alternative Wonders all day long wherever you are.

Doobie Brothers in Phoenix: Ultimate guide to their Footprint Center concert

the blood brothers tour

The 50th Anniversary Tour they launched in 2021 put Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McFee back on the road together as the Doobie Brothers for the first time in a quarter-century.

Now, they’re takin’ it to the streets with a new album in the can — their first full album of new music with McDonald since 1980’s “One Step Closer” — and coming to Phoenix for a show at Footprint Center on Wednesday, June 26.

As Simmons joked in an exclusive interview with The Arizona Republic , “Actually, this is the second 50 years of the band we're celebrating now.”

And it seems like it’s off to a pretty good start.

Simmons also talked about the making of their latest album, the hours of unused footage from the early ‘70s he hopes will turn up in the latest Doobies documentary, the glitter-rock phase he swears they went through and what keeps him "going for it” after more than 50 years.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“You write a song and you don't necessarily go, 'Well, that's it. That's what I was going for,’” he said. “You write a song and you go, 'Well, that's close.'”
