Bartlesville’s Price Tower Arts Center

Tour frank lloyd wright's work..

price tower arts center tours

D id you realize that the ONE and ONLY Frank Lloyd Wright-designed and fully completed skyscraper is straight up Highway 75 in nearby Bartlesville , Oklahoma? I was pleasantly surprised to learn that one of (if not THE) the most influential American architects of all time brought his talent in the form of a true architectural masterpiece to this small prairie city.  Today, it stands tall for us all to admire and enjoy.  The Price Tower Arts Center is one of only three of Wright’s works in Oklahoma and the only one in the state that is open for public viewing.

How The Price Tower Came to Be

“The Tree That Escaped the Crowded Forest,” Wright’s name for the structure, came to be after a few decades of stop-and-start evolution. He originally completed his skyscraper design project in the 1920s for New York City, but the Great Depression scrapped the funding for it and the design plans were filed away.

However, thanks to wealthy Bartlesville oilman H.C. Price, 85-year-old Wright was commissioned in the early 1950s to design an office building for him with the help of a select few, including architect Bruce Alonzo Goff, who chaired the School of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma and who introduced Price to Wright. (Goff is distinguished by his designs for houses and other buildings, such as Boston Avenue Methodist Church, in Oklahoma and elsewhere, and his work was heavily influenced by  Wright).

Wright’s original skyscraper plans were resurrected, modified and executed and, thus, a “tree” in Bartlesville was erected.  The skyscraper that was once planned to reside among many in a “virtual forest” of them in Manhattan became a contrastingly tall building on the Oklahoma Plains.

Design Notes

Frank Lloyd Wright’s plan mixed “taproot” design with cantilevered floors. Known for his organic-inspired design, Wright borrowed from the natural design of a tree, crafting the building’s outer walls and floors to extend from a central foundation—the taproot, or trunk, an inner core constructed of concrete and steel.  All of the tower’s floors stem out like tree branches, cantilevering from the core.

From Office to Museum

Officially opening in 1956 on Dewey Avenue between 5th and 6th Street, the 19-story, gold-tinted and copper-laced building served as office space for Mr. Price and other businesses as well as a dwelling space for a select few.  Today, the “tree,” now named The Price Tower Arts Center, is a fully functioning office space, a friendly museum, and an operating inn, which is listed on the Historic Hotels of America registry.

price tower arts center tours

Visiting Price Tower

Most days, the center offers an hour-long, guided tour, which includes a visit to the restored executive office of Mr. H.C. Price and the H.C. Price Company corporate apartment, located on the top floor.  Within these windowed walls, you can view original Wright interiors as well as admire the Osage Hills and downtown Bartlesville. The tour also includes explanations of the building design, the choice materials used, and the architectural nuances that are unique to Wright’s architectural style, one of which is his belief that space should not be wasted on elevators, lobbies or stairwells.

Heading up on the tiny elevator is fun for the riders, but it may require a few trips to get everyone in the family on the same floor at the same time. The final phase of the tour offers a leisurely glance at both temporary and permanent displays on the first floor and second floor mezzanines. Photographing the copper mural in the lobby is almost a requirement, in my opinion.

Dining and Lodging

If you are interested, the 15th and 16th floors house the Copper , a bar and restaurant with pub food, wine, beer and spirits. This is a fine place to sit down to watch the sun set over Osage County and to talk about the building’s beauty. (Editor’s Note, as of Sept. 2022, Copper is temporarily closed for renovations.)

Wright designed all of the built-in furniture at the Tower, and the hotel rooms are furnished to maintain the integrity of Wright’s mid-century design, including the use of colors, materials and finishes. Visitors will notice the use of copper and the unusual triangular shape of the tiny bathrooms, retaining the original layouts.

Rooms are modernized with flat screen televisions and have seriously comfortable beds, but some rooms/suites are not well insulated, so they can be very hot in the summer and downright cold in the winter months. Space heaters are provided, but if it’s really cold out, that might not be enough. However, spending the night might be an added twist for a real family adventure, especially for curious kids and flexible folks who want to soak in Frank Lloyd Wright’s style and flair.

Dubbed a National Historic Landmark in 2007 as well as earning a spot on the list of one of the American Institute of Architects’ 17 most significant examples of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, the tower uniquely punctuates downtown Bartlesville, leaving a lasting impression of Wright’s great work and one worth taking family time to tour and to stay in the hotel, for those who might want to spend a night at the museum.

As noted on the website, pricetower.org , tour times for individuals are offered Monday-Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.  There is one tour on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Admission for the Expanded Historic Tower Tour at 11 a.m. is $20 for adults, $14 for youth (6-17) and $18 for seniors 65 and older. Admission for the 2 p.m. Historic Tower Tour is $15 for adults, $10 for youth (6-17) and $12 for seniors 65 and older.

The staff here is highly knowledgeable and extremely accommodating—an added touch for an already nice experience. For more information, call 918.336.4949.

Price Tower

Wright’s only skyscraper, the Price Tower is also one of only two Wright structures to have a vertical orientation (the other being the Johnson Wax Research Tower).

Harold C. Price

Northeast Sixth St. at Dewey Ave.

National Historic Landmark. National Register of Historic Places. Open to the public with tours available.

pricetower.org

The inspiration for the oil pipeline firm’s “tower in a country town” was an unrealized 1925 proposal of Wright’s for a New York City apartment building called St. Mark’s Tower. Wright described the design as a tree-like mast supported by a central “trunk” of four elevator shafts anchored by a deep central foundation. The Price Tower’s 19 concrete floors cantilever like branches of a tree. Freed from their load-bearing function, the exterior walls become ornamental screens decorated in patinated copper “leaves” and gold-tinted glass. The materials for the Price Tower were equally innovative for the era: cast concrete walls, pigmented concrete floors, and aluminum-trimmed windows and doors. The Price Tower completely changed the horizon of the Oklahoma prairie town. Purchased in 1981 by Phillips Petroleum, the Price Tower Arts Center now includes a museum, hotel and bar. The Inn at Price Tower occupies seven of the upper floors of the Wright skyscraper.

We have visited most of FLW's significant buildings around the country so it was great to finally see his only skyscraper. I booked these tickets about a month ago knowing we would be passing through OK. Given the tours are limited to only about four people and the tour is only once per day this is essential. The price is around $20/person plus the always annoying fees. Our tour guide, Price (no relation to the original owners) did a super job weaving the story of FLW, the Price company, the community, and the creation of this building. This building is so different (and yet very similar) to FLW's other designs it was nice to have an architect as our guide. We not only saw the lower two floors but we got to the 17th-19th floors which have been restored to their original designs. Very cool. We also walked across the green to the community center designed by a FLW associate. That was also interesting. Hopefully the new owners of this building will be generous stewards of this historical treasure.

Wall

This is Frank Lloyd Wright's only realized skyscraper, randomly built on an Oklahoma prairie at the behest of an oil tycoon. This isn't a fancy site, but it's unique and, as I said, the only one in existence. Additionally, our guide, Price Connors, was amazing. Price is an architect by trade, cultured and overflowing with information. He was personable and engaging, and really brought the history and modern day story of the building and Bartlesville community alive. I took the 1.5 hour extended tour that allows access to some of the more private spaces. It was 20 dollar plus tax, and I recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time online, as tours are small, around four people. There is a shorter tour. There is also a small art gallery with local pieces and some galleries with Frank Lloyd Wright works and concepts. Bartlesville is about 45 minutes north of Tulsa and close to the area where the pioneer woman has her base of operations, so this could be a bit of a side trip. The tour also includes a tour of the nearby community arts center, which is impressive for a town this size. There is an on site restaurant and you can also stay in hotel rooms on site, which are decorated in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright.

My husband and I had the pleasure to stay the night at the Price Tower. What an experience that was! First of all, if you're claustrophobic be aware this is a very ... cozy setup. I am claustrophobic so the elevator ride to the 9th floor was a struggle, but I survived- so will you. Check in was a breeze, the gentlemen showed us to the elevator, fits 2 adults comfortably- no more than that. We made it to the 9th floor and BAM- there's our room. I've never stayed in a place quite like this but I'm glad we did. On a side note, we noticed there are 19 floors, there was not a button for the 2nd floor BUT there was one for the 13, very unusual and I'm not sure about the story behind that. The room was very cozy, we were only staying one night so it wasn't an issue. The bathroom is small but that's okay, it was clean with heated floors. Great water pressure in the shower and the place was clean. We snuggled up for the night and slept very well. Another side not: I was hoping it would be haunted or something, but alas no ghost or spirit visitors. We really enjoyed our stay, glad we had this experience. If you're thinking about staying the night, go for it.

I am a huge FLW fan so just the experience of being surrounded by his architecture made me want to give a five.. but the heat is not working and I'm lying here in a bathrobe over my pajamas and a small space heater!! Unacceptable!! Found out top floors are under renovation, so night of music and relaxing music didn't happen. There was a restaurant on the first floor but not worthy of FLW name!!! Like I said, the architecture is phenomenal but disgrace to treat guests like this.. I don't pay to be uncomfortable!!! Do Better !! Don't Stay here until they get these issues fixed!!

This is a review of the Art Center only, not of the tower, tour, inn, or Copper Bar. I visited an exhibit here many years ago (I think it was a film costume design exhibit with Oscars). We loved it. It was slick and clean. The staff was helpful and friendly but it literally seemed like this was in a different location than what I remember. I know it's a Wright design so there are small spaces everywhere, but the exhibit hall could do with some updating. Also, I am fully aware this was a NEH traveling exhibit and that it was on the small side as well. As a Frida-phile, I saw some new photographs and it was good to see her not so famous still lifes again. I'm glad we visited and this might be a four or five star review if we had toured the tour. (I've been in an Inn room before and it was spectacular!) Our next trip will be for an overnight and a dinner at the Copper Bar.

The Price Tower is worth stopping at if you are in Bartlesville. Not only do you get to step back into a time warp, the staff, art, museum and exterior are all wonderful. Being inside a Frank Lloyd Wright building has it's perks. Come on, it's a Frank Lloyd Wright Building! The details, both inside and out are pretty spectacular. Add this to you must see list.

The Price Tower Art Center is worth a visit if you are a Frank Lloyd Wright fan. Our tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable about the subject. There are tight spaces and small elevators involved so be advised. Also, this is not recommended for small children. Our tour was disrupted by a small child yelling consistently, and with such small spaces it made it very difficult for our guide as well.

Price Tower

Review #200 for one of the coolest places in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. As a temporary transplant seeing the Price Tower everyday, I still couldn't believe that something like this exists here. Situated in the first few floors of this "Skyscraper" the Art Center exhibits current modern art, original furniture designed specifically for the building as well as other Frank Lloyd Wright items. Being slightly ignorant of modern art I couldn't quite tell if all the rocking chairs were an exhibit or somewhere to sit and look at the art. Either way I wasn't going to risk it. Part of the Arts Center is Architecture Study Center, open Tuesday through Thursday 10 am to 12 pm for research. The hardest thing for me was the wack-a-do stairs. I get a little vertigo on stairs regardless, maybe it's a little anxiety from falling in between stair steps as a kid and handing there by my baby fingers until my dad grabbed me. Thank God for all the gymnastic classes. I have small feet, size 5, and I felt like I couldn't get enough footing on any of the I think three staircases. Not to mention it seems like a fun house experience. There is the Inn at Price Tower, the Copper Bar, but be sure to visit my favorite thing about this place the Arts Center Gift Shop. OMG, did I die in that store. I love myself a museum gift shop and I think this is one of my all time favorites. It could have been very dangerous, if I had room in my suitcase to bring it all back. I did get my hubby a Frank Lloyd Wright business card case. Which I think I won the "Best Wife" award when I came back with that. Entrance to the Art Center is $6. Tuesday - Saturday 10am to 5pm Sunday 12pm to 5pm You can also go on a guided tour of the Tower for $12. Tuesday - Thursday at 11:00am and 2:00pm Friday - Saturday at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm Sunday at 2:00pm

Nothing makes sense here, but yet everything makes sense here: this was a place designed for humans and not robots -- down to the smallest detail, everywhere. The huge glass windows in the rooms -- which all open! --, the no-right angles, the mirror receptacle and switch covers, the beautiful red stone floors, the intimate elevators... and everything else that makes you feel like you're in a dream. You only live once, so don't miss this dream.

About this deal.

  • The 60-minute guided tower tour includes a visit to the Historic top 3 floors including a 2-story apartment and the 19th-floor office of Mr. Price office where guests can view original Wright interiors as well as temporary and permanent exhibitions on the first and second floors.

About Price Tower Arts Center

Looming 19 stories above the Oklahoma landscape, the Price Tower Arts Center was originally designed as the world headquarters for the pipeline masters of the H.C. Price Company. However, even at the time of its opening in 1956, the Prairie-style cantilevered building's origin far outstripped the reputation of its intended tenants: the tower is Frank Lloyd Wright's only completed skyscraper. The H.C. Price Company moved on in 1981, but its famous former home remained; today, the National Historic Landmark stands tall as the Price Tower Arts Center—a monument to American architecture and design of the 20th century.

Inside, a range of rotating special exhibits often focus on the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright as well as works by modern artists, both past and living, from around around the world. These exhibitions include work from the center's permanent collection, which spans drawings, furniture, textiles, and samples of building design from some of the era's finest architectural minds. Docents regularly reveal facts about these pieces of art, and the design of the building itself, on guided tours to its 19th-floor executive offices, art-filled lower mezzanines, and the secret shark tank under the elevator.

Recognized as one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most remarkable buildings, it was named a National Historic Landmark in 2007 by U.S.Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne (one of only 11 in Oklahoma), and was nominated as a World Heritage site, placing it among one of the greatest architectural achievements of the 20th century. The Price Tower was Frank Lloyd Wright’s pioneering experiment in the multi-use skyscraper: a tall, slim, richly detailed structure whose purpose was to combine business offices, retail and apartments.
