How to Zoom Out on Safari

It's free and super easy to set up

Whether you're using Safari on a Mac or an iPhone/iPad, zooming out can help you see more of a web page at once. In this article, we'll explain how to zoom out on Safari and what you can do with this function.

Understanding Zoom Functions in Safari

Safari offers several zooming functions to help you view web pages in different ways. One of these functions is zooming out, which reduces the size of the content on a page. This can be helpful when you're having trouble seeing everything on a page, or if you want to see multiple parts of a page at once.

What is Zooming Out?

Zooming out is a feature that lets you reduce the amount of content displayed on a web page. This can be useful when you want to see the entire layout of a page at once, or when you want to see multiple sections of a page simultaneously.

For example, let's say you're working on a research paper and need to compare information from several different sources. By zooming out, you can have multiple web pages open on your screen at once, making it easier to compare information and take notes.

Another reason why you might want to use the zoom-out function in Safari is if you're browsing on a small screen, such as a laptop or tablet. By zooming out, you can fit more content on the screen at once, making it easier to navigate and read.

Why Zoom Out on Safari?

There are many reasons why you might want to use the zoom-out function in Safari. For example, if you're working on a project that requires you to see multiple web pages at once, zooming out can help you see more content on the screen at once. Additionally, if you have trouble seeing small text or images, zooming out can make them easier to read or view.

Furthermore, zooming out can be helpful when you're viewing a web page with a lot of content, such as a news article or a blog post. By zooming out, you can get a better sense of the overall structure of the page and how the content is organized.

Finally, zooming out can be a useful tool for people with visual impairments. If you have trouble seeing small text or images, zooming out can make them easier to read or view. Additionally, Safari offers other accessibility features, such as the ability to increase text size and change the color contrast of a web page, which can make browsing the internet easier for people with visual impairments.

I tried googling and I come up with threads and articles from 2014 era. Is anyone having this issue? I tried checking accessibility settings on my iPad, and nothing jumps out at me. I have the iPad Pro 12.9” 2021. Say, I have 3 tabs open, if I switch between one, it will auto-zoom super huge and I’d have to pinch to zoom out. If I go to another tab (while not all the time), it will often do the same thing. Anyone know how to fix this or know what is causing it?

  • Open the Settings app on the iPad.
  • Scroll down and choose the Safari browser from Settings .
  • From Safari Settings, select the Page Zoom Safari option.
  • Within the window, tap to select the Zooming level .

I will try that and see how it goes. Thank you.

Thought it resolved itself, but nope. Still there when rapidly switching tabs, one will zoom in super close.

I also have this problem in ipadOS 17.1 extremely annoying. Ipad pro is the worst device I bought its so infuriating I’m going to sell all my apple devices. I can easily reproduce when switching from tradingview and github, when i go back to tradingview the page is auto zoomed in. the only browser that works fine is firefox, it doesnt have the weird auto zoom issue BUT password autofill doesn’t work as nicely as safari, basically everything is broken for me in ipados apart from casual media consumption

I think it has to do with having a keyboard attached. I have learned to live with it, but it seems more prevalent when I have it attached.

Zoom In and Zoom Out On iPhone or iPad

Use the pinch gesture or turn on zoom from Accessibility settings

ipad safari unzoom

  • University of Texas at Arlington

One of the coolest features Apple brought to its iPad and iPhone was the pinch-to-zoom gesture, making zooming in and out intuitive and natural. Previously, zoom features were either nonexistent or difficult to use. The Apple zoom feature works on photos, web pages, and any app that supports the pinch-zoom gesture.

These directions apply generally to all iPad and iPhone models running iPadOS 13 and later and iOS 13 and later.

Use Pinch Gestures to Zoom In and Out

To zoom in on a photo or web page, press on the screen with your index finger and thumb leaving only a small amount of space between the two fingers. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Keep your finger and thumb on the screen, then move your fingers away from each other, expanding the space between them.
  • As your fingers move apart, the screen zooms in.
  • To zoom out, do the reverse: Move your thumb and index finger toward each other while keeping each pressed to the screen.

Any two fingers can be used to zoom in and out on an iPhone or iPad, but for most people, the thumb and index finger make the most sense.

If it helps you remember, think of your fingers pinching a piece of paper. If you were to drag your fingers inward on a sheet of paper, it would fold into itself, becoming smaller. The same idea applies here.

Use the Accessibility Zoom Setting

In some cases, the pinch-to-zoom feature doesn't work. An app might not support the gesture, or a web page may have code that is running or a stylesheet setting that prevents the page from being expanded.

The iPad accessibility features include a zoom that always works no matter if you're in an app, on a web page, or viewing photos.

The feature isn't activated by default, so you must turn it on in the Setting app:

From the Home screen, open the Settings app.

Go to Accessibility > Zoom .

Tap the Zoom toggle switch to make it green and turn it on.

After you activate zoom on your iPad or iPhone, you'll immediately see the magnifying glass, like shown here on an iPad.

The zoom functionality isn't captured in a screenshot, as you can see in this picture.

Press and hold the anchor/bar at the bottom of the zoom window to move it around the screen and see everything zoomed up. You can also press-and-drag three fingers, which might be preferred when zooming with this tool on a smaller screen like an iPhone.

Double-tap the screen with three fingers to enable or disable zoom. To disable it permanently, repeat the steps above and toggle Zoom to the off position.

From Accessibility > Zoom you can access other zoom options, such as increasing the maximum zoom level, choosing full-screen zoom over window zoom, picking a zoom filter, and more.

Safari Zoom in/ zoom out (A) on toolbar not working

The text zoom/unzoom function on the toolbar has quit working. If I click on either zoom or unzoom the same thing occurs. It zooms or unzooms for about a second or so then returns to the original state. I have used this function forever and am not sure when it quit working.

This happens in Safari and also Safari Technology Preview. This does not happen with Firefox.

Thanks for any reply.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Before going to support I tried resetting the SMC, which only made it worse. I then decided to check all the preferences in Safari. Under the heading "Websites/Page Zoom" a number of web sites were set to different zoom %, and the General setting "Share across devices" was checked. Unchecking share across devices fixed the issue. I have a MacMini on my home network as well as an iPad and iPhone. I don't know what exactly how this works but my issue is fixed.

Thanks again.

  • Random zooming in When I am using Safari, the screen often zooms in when I am using my mouse. Command-0 fixes this, but it is very annoying. I do not have Smart Zoom selected in System Mouse settings. Is there a fix for this that I am missing? It has been doing this even before Ventura. 1084 5
  • Cursor hovering function gone in safari Earlier, when using my macbook pro and the standard trackpad to move the cursor around, the cursor has interacted with the content on the web pages without needing an actual click (say moving the cursor over a facebook notification and the notification goes blue and you get some options to click on to the left, or when moving the cursor over a playing youtube video the scrubbing bar (?) at the bottom of the viewport shows up, or when hoovering/moving the cursor over the scrubbing bar it previews thumbnails from the video). That function has suddenly gone, and it relates to all web pages in Safari (other browsers work as normal). In Youtube specifically, when playing a video in standard view or cinema view, the cursor almost always disappears completely no matter where I point it on the screen, and requirers a lot movement to come back to the screen. 3507 3
  • Keyboard navigation in Safari toolbar search/location field When typing in the search/url field in the Safari toolbar, plausible results are progressively filled into list menu that appears below the search field. It used to be that at any time I could switch to the arrow keys on my keyboard and move the selection down to the result I wanted and hit Return to select. No more! Pressing the arrow keys will momentarily move the selection down the list but it seems some other process is constantly returning the selection back to the search field. Certainly much faster than I can ever hit Return to select. Has anyone else seen this? Is there any known solution? Safari Version 15.6.1 MacOS version 11.6.8 604 3

Possible Alternative to the icon Zoom In .

Use the keyboard combo Command + ( plus ) to zoom In and Command - ( minus ) to zoom Out

Not sure the next will work in Monterey but Command 0 ( zero ) will revert to Original size

Your iPad is a very powerful device. But it's not infallible; sometimes, a few options are messed up, and you face an unresponsive zoomed-in screen. One of them is when your iPad screen zoomed in stuck . And in this article, we will be discussing how to fix iPad stuck in zoom mode.

Part 1. Why Is Your iPad Stuck On Zoom?

Part 2. how do you unfreeze zoom on ipad.

1. 3-Finger Tap the iPad Screen

2. Triple-Click the Home Button

3. Force Restart Your iPad

4. Turn Zoom Off with iTunes/Finder

5. Use Pinch-To-Zoom

6. Fix iPad Screen Zoomed In Stuck With 100% Success Rate

7. Restore iPad to Factory Settings with iTunes

Bonus: How To Avoid Your iPad Gets Stuck In Zoom Mode Again

Firstly, let's take a look at why you might be facing this problem in the first place. The good news is that this is not any kind of system-breaking bug or anything harmful. The zoom mode stuck happens due to the accessibility settings.

Your iPad has a lot of accessibility settings; these add options such as magnification, text to speech, etc. options to help people with difficulties use it better. The zoom mode is the magnification. However, the problem is that sometimes the magnification mode does not turn off.

Your iPad is stuck on zoom mode because of the magnification problem in the accessibility settings. If we tweak a few things in this menu, we can fix and avoid this problem. We'll be looking at the exact items in the following sections.

1 3-Finger Tap the iPad Screen

Use three fingers and double tap on your iPad screen. When you have the accessibility settings turned on, the three-finger double-tap gesture will toggle zoom mode on or off. If you are stuck in zoom mode, then try this gesture, and zoom mode will turn off, and you will be back to the usual screen scaling again.

2 Triple-Click the Home Button

Triple clicking the home button is the default shortcut for accessibility settings. This will pull up all the accessibility options, and you can turn off the zoom mode from there. This is a handy option that can help you easily use the other accessibility features.

However, newer iPads don't have a home button, so this option is unavailable. You can set the shortcut on the power button or one of the side buttons on these newer devices.

3 Force Restart Your iPad

The usual sliding method to power off and then power on again won't work if your iPad is stuck and unresponsive. The easy fix is a force restart. This will likely remove the zoom mode too. Whether or not your iPad has a home button, the method differs a bit.

If your iPad has a Home button, press and hold the Power and Home button until the Apple logo appears, then release and wait for it to power up.

If your iPad does not have a home button, press the Upper Volume button once, then the Lower Volume button once, and press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo appears.

force restart iPad

4 Turn Zoom Off with iTunes/Finder

You can use Finder or iTunes on your computer to turn off the zoom. Connect your iPad to a computer where you have connected it before. Then launch Finder or iTunes and select your iPad from the sidebar or the top menu.

Afterward, from the options, select Configure Accessibility and uncheck the checkbox next to zoom . Then press OK , and then finally press Sync to make sure all the settings are confirmed.

turn zoom off with iTunes

5 Use Pinch-To-Zoom

Sometimes it's not the accessibility settings problem. And the app you are using is zoomed into a webpage or image. In these cases, you can just use the pinch to zoom gesture. Make a pinching motion and see if it zooms in or out again. You can readjust your zoom back to normal like this too.

6 Fix iPad Screen Zoomed In Stuck With 100% Success Rate

Even with the above tweaks, the problem can persist. It could be due to any kind of glitch. The confirmed 100% success rate method to fix iPad screen zoomed in stuck is using professional iPad fixer like WooTechy iPhixer . Click your iPad icon and go to the Summary tab. Click Restore iPad option and wait until it is finished.

restore iPad with iTunes

You can avoid facing this problem in the future by disabling the accessibility settings. From your Settings app, tap General > Accessibility > Zoom . Then toggle the switch next to Zoom to switch off the option. To turn off Accessibility shortcuts, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut and uncheck all the boxes.
