Unlike years past where Apple has provided Safari with more under-the-hood changes, this year, the update is apparent with Safari taking on a fresh coat of paint. Visually, it looks cleaner and more compact than it did before.

Those changes all come to the redesigned unified search bar. Instead of splitting tabs into a top and bottom row, it is all crammed together into a single row. Tabs slide left to right, and when you select a tab, it becomes the combo URL/search box. By combining the active tab with the URL box, Apple has reduced the space requirements significantly.

To help fit everything in, Apple employed a few other space-saving measures. Some buttons have been relocated behind an ellipsis in the URL box. You can tap the ellipsis for the share button, add to bookmarks/reading list option, and the reload button.

Moving the page reload button may cause some frustration, but it is still possible to use the keyboard shortcut CMD+R. That makes the button less critical, so hiding it behind the ellipsis will free up some much-needed space for most users. If you did routinely use the refresh button, Apple's repositioning is less than ideal.

Fortunately, you can still customize the top bar. You can right-click the bar to bring up the customization option, and you can drag and drop the remaining toolbar items where you'd like them.

Another neat feature of the toolbar is its ability to change color. When you visit different sites, the Safari toolbar will take on the color of any site you land on. When visiting AppleInsider, the toolbar takes on AppleInsider's dark blue. Visiting YouTube turns the bar white and visiting Apple's iPhone 12 Pro mini-site makes it black. This creates a more cohesive visual experience where the toolbar doesn't stand out.

Apple made a few modifications to the start page this year, most relating to syncing across your various devices. When you set your background for the start page, it can sync to any device you're signed in to with your Apple ID. Set it on your Mac and it will show on your iPad . This is a new toggle located within the settings icon in the lower-right corner of the start page.

That same menu has a toggle to display or hide iCloud tabs on the start page and a "Use Start Page on All Devices" option.

Tab Groups are arguably the most significant feature coming to Safari. The more we use them, the more we enjoy them. If you have a habit of opening a bunch of tabs at once, you likely will too.

How it works is that you can group any tabs you have opened into different buckets. Create a group for your work tabs, create a group for relaxing, and create one with your financial or banking sites. Then you can jump between your groups as needed, keeping your toolbar clean and organized.

It can also help you focus if you don't have open tabs for Reddit or Twitter while you're trying to work and you don't have to see your work tabs while trying to kick back.

You can jump between Tab Groups from the new toolbar option or do so from the redesigned sidebar. The sidebar used to be two tabs — one for bookmarks one for your reading list — but now it is a series of folders for both of those two categories as well as your Tab Groups.

A new Tab Group can be created on-demand at any time from that drop down in the toolbar. It can be an empty group or can be pre-populated with your current open tabs.

Quick Note integration

Quick Notes is another fantastic new feature that is coming to macOS Monterey as well as iPadOS 15 . It is a system-wide feature that allows you effortlessly create a note with contextually aware app links to make them even more useful. But Safari has its own specific ties to Quick Note.

The ellipsis in the toolbar features a button to generate a Quick Note. You can also create a Quick Note by highlighting a text block, right-clicking, and adding to a Quick Note.

These are easy, and whenever you create a Quick Note with a link to a page, any time you revisit that page in Safari, your note will resurface in the lower-right corner.

Available in beta

The updated version of Safari will land this fall for most users, but you have a couple of options if you'd like to get an early look.

Developers can test macOS Monterey now, though this is strongly discouraged for non-developers and especially discouraged on your daily driver. Apple will be issuing a public beta in July, which is a better option for those eager to give it a try.

Alternatively, Apple releases what it calls Safari Technology Previews. This is available now for users of macOS Big Sur. You can install Safari 15.0 on your Mac and it will install as a second app, alongside the existing public version of Safari. You can download the technology preview from Apple's mini site.

You will have both Safari 14 and Safari 15 Technology Preview on your Mac. You can test out the new features as much as you want, and if it gives you issues, switch back to the public build and remove the Technical Preview without having any risk.

Otherwise, sit back and be ready for a new Safari experience and much more coming soon.

Cramming navigation controls, extensions, tabs and the search field into one bar results in tabs becoming quickly unrecognisable, whilst the full-address can nolonger be easily visualised to confirm its authenticity. That is plainly less functional. Furthermore, the colour-changing toolbar is a fail as either Safari controls become 'merged' with those of the current website, or they seem unnecessarily re-coloured when one scrolls down the page and the actual website header has disappeared from sight. Version 14 seemed to have finally hit a sweet spot, but Safari 15 is trashing sensible UI behaviour as was done with Finder., Alas, not only are they reversing usability themselves, by example Apple are encouraging third-party developers to do likewise.

Neat???  And all those pastel colors are giving me flashbacks to the days of leisure suits, rotating disco mirror lights, and other such "neat" things.   I could go on but I don't think it would be good for my blood pressure

What to expect with Apple’s new iPad models launching soon

Apple is expected to unveil two new iPad models this fall, potentially at its annual iPhone keynote next month. This will include a new entry-level 11th generation model, as well as the 7th generation of iPad mini. Both of these models have gone over 2 years without an update, so we’re overdue for a refresh.

iPad (11th generation)

Apple last updated this iPad in October of 2022, marking the largest redesign of the base model iPad since Apple reintroduced the model in 2017. It introduced the new flat-sided design with a plethora of fun colors, switched to USB-C, and added landscape stereo speakers. It was also the first iPad to have a landscape selfie camera, something that wouldn’t get added to other iPads for another year and a half. It launched at $449.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is “focusing on how to make its production costs lower on the entry-level model.” It’s unclear if that means we’ll see another price reduction, or if Apple will just be improving their margins on the 11th generation model. After Apple’s May 7th event, they did reduce the price to $349, so consumers likely won’t get to benefit from Apple’s cheaper production costs this time around.

The iPad (10th generation) currently has an A14 Bionic chip, and it isn’t quite clear what Apple will upgrade the 11th generation model to. Traditionally, the base model iPad has lagged 2 years behind on chipset upgrades, so the A16 Bionic is likely a safe guess. However, with Apple Intelligence being on the table, Apple could potentially shift their strategy and put an A17 or A18 chip in the new iPad 11.

iPad mini (7th generation)

iPad mini last received a refresh back in September 2021, also marking the largest redesign since the introduction of the iPad mini back in 2012. The 6th generation model introduced the flat-sided design (although with less fun colors than the aforementioned iPad 10), switched to USB-C, and added support for Apple Pencil 2.

Since it’s the oldest iPad in the lineup, the iPad mini lacks certain features from the newer iPads, such as a landscape front facing camera and support for Apple Pencil Pro. It’s quite likely we see both of those features with the 7th generation refresh, although there’s a possibility that they don’t end up moving the camera, since iPad mini is far more likely to be utilized in portrait orientation. Apple Pencil Pro support is likely a given, however.

We’ll also likely see iPad mini jump to the latest generation A18 chipset, which will bring Apple Intelligence features to Apple’s smallest iPad for the first time. This means you’ll be able to utilize the new Siri, Genmoji, Image Playground, and more on your new iPad – although you won’t have everything at launch.

The iPad mini 6 also faced a display issue known as “jelly scrolling” , where some users could notice that one half of the display refreshed faster than the other half, resulting in an inconsistent scrolling experience. Although unconfirmed, some rumors point to Apple fixing this issue with the next generation model.

In addition, the iPad mini 7 is likely to start with 128GB of storage, similar to the new iPad Air. This is up from 64GB on the current model. It’ll also likely start at the same $499 starting price as the current model.

Stage Manager?

Apple introduced an all new windowing system called Stage Manager in iPadOS 16, initially requiring an M1 chip or newer for the full feature set. After some backlash, Apple added support to the A12X and A12Z iPad Pros, although those iPads didn’t get support for external displays. However, we’ve yet to see this feature expand to any other A-series iPads since that initial move in 2022.

There’s a decent chance we see Stage Manager come to both new iPads. The A16 chip is likely capable of supporting the feature set, and the A17 and A18 chips are most definitely capable of it. It would make sense for Apple to add Stage Manager to these newer iPads to make it a more appealing upgrade, although this is just speculation.

Overall, both of these iPad refreshes are shaping up to be quite small, although they are important ones. As an iPad mini fan myself, I’m looking forward to being able to buy a new version of the tablet with Apple Intelligence. It’d also be nice to have Stage Manager on the smaller iPad, something that my colleague Filipe showcased a couple years ago.

Apple rushes surprise iOS security update to iPhone, iPad

W hen an unplanned iPhone and iPad software update gets pushed without warning, it usually means it is related to a serious security issue. Today is no exception. Apple has just pushed an alert to download the latest iOS 17.6.1 update without much detail except for these important words:

"This update includes important bug fixes and addresses an issue that prevents enabling or disabling Advanced Data Protection."

While it offers you the choice to update now or update tonight, I recommend you do it now without waiting. Updates like these are becoming increasingly frequent as bad actors find ways to compromise your safety, security and privacy on Apple products.

iOS 17.6.1, released on Aug. 7, 2024, primarily addresses a critical issue affecting Apple's Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature. The update fixes a bug that prevented some users from enabling or disabling ADP, an optional iCloud security feature that expands end-to-end encryption to additional services such as device backups, Messages backups and Photos.

The issue manifested in two ways. Users attempting to enable ADP encountered an error in the user interface , accurately reflecting the problem. Users trying to disable ADP saw it deactivated in the interface while it remained active for their iCloud data. Despite the issue, Apple assures us that the few users affected by this problem still experienced the same level of security, if not more, than they initially believed.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

After installing iOS 17.6.1, affected users who previously attempted to disable ADP will receive a notification directing them to Settings, where they can confirm their choice to turn off the feature.

The update includes the ADP fix, as well as other important bug fixes and security improvements. This release is part of Apple's ongoing efforts to maintain the stability and security of iOS 17 as the company prepares for the upcoming launch of iOS 18 later this year.

2024 Digital Yield Tour - Iowa

Iowa could set statewide corn yield record of 205 bpa in 2024.

MT. JULIET, Tenn. (DTN) -- Iowa pulled itself out of drought and into a record corn crop, if the DTN Digital Yield Tour estimates hold true. An active rainy pattern settled over the state this spring, and while it slowed planting season down, most areas benefitted from the replenishing rainfall. Parts of the state's northwest received too much rain and suffered from flooding and ponding issues.

MARKET COMMENTS

"The Digital Yield Tour's corn yield estimate of 205 bpa for Iowa is reasonable, with crops enjoying good soil moisture," DTN Lead Analyst Todd Hultman said. "Production would have been higher, if not for June flooding in southeastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa. Both states have also seen several incidents of severe weather and hail hurting crops this year.

"DTN's soybean yield estimate of 59.4 bpa for Iowa appears reasonable at first glance, but I have to say USDA's estimate of 61.0 bpa for Iowa may prove correct. Crop conditions look much better in Iowa this year, thanks to better soil moisture, and there is more rain expected this week. Earlier hits from severe weather were the only blemishes on a very good crop season."

WEATHER COMMENTS

"Iowa has been in a very interesting spot this year," DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick said. "Coming off of four straight years of drought-affected yields, widespread long-duration drought was situated over the state this spring, and deficits were incredibly large. Some areas were behind by 12-15 inches over the last four years. But the wet weather started in earnest this spring, and the active pattern never really quit in the state. The state has not really gone through long stretches of dryness this season, and soil moisture has been abundant for the duration of the crop's development. Drought was completely wiped off the map May 28 and hasn't returned.

"However, there were several periods of very heavy rainfall across the north and that undoubtedly left some areas washed out or with uneven stands. Far northwestern counties endured 15-18 inches of rain from a single storm in June that left all sorts of damage in the area. Many other events over 3 inches have occurred across the north this season as well. Heavy rain in other portions of the state likely came at a more spread-out pace, allowing much of the state to recover and set up for really good yields.

"To go along with the active weather, severe storms have been a constant feature as well. One hundred twenty-nine tornadoes have been reported in the state so far this year to go along with the third-most hail reports in our nine-state tour. The most significant event was a derecho that developed over the eastern portions of the state on July 15. Luckily, in this state, this derecho was not as severe as the one that moved through in August 2020, hit less of the state, and came a month earlier, allowing crops more time to recover."

OBSERVATIONS

-- Corey Rozenboom is a FIRST manager located in O'Brien County, Iowa.

"It's been the wettest year on record from April through June, so that caused planting delays and replant situations that we've never really had to encounter before. A lot of corn that was planted during the third and fourth weeks of April, which is usually our ideal planting dates, had to be replanted because it either sat in the wet, saturated ground and rotted, or it got crusted over and couldn't break through. So, it resulted in a lot of poor stands. Growers had to make a decision to replant or leave it, and it was about half and half."

Lots of corn went in the second and third weeks of May, and while it doesn't look bad now, the plants have shallow root systems and are dealing with nitrogen deficiencies.

"Some of those are corrected with side dressing, but it's going to be a crop that's probably going to be way off what it was last year. Of course, in 2023, we had record corn yields," he said.

"Most growers are electing not to spray fungicides because the crop condition is poor enough that the feeling is the extra applications aren't worth the extra yield."

Rozenboom's main concern between now and harvest for the corn is water. If it dries off, it could lead to shallow kernels and lower test weight. While he hasn't done any yield checks yet, he's estimating corn yield will flirt with the lower edge of APH yields, which he described as being in the 170 bpa to 180 bpa range.

Soybeans don't show the impact of delayed planting nearly as much as corn.

"Growers are dealing with the normal things. There's white mold in some areas. Aphids are showing up in northwest Iowa, so fields are getting sprayed for those. Herbicides have been challenged with all the wet weather.

Rozenboom is expecting soybean yields in the upper 50 bpa to 60 bpa range.

-- Ben Riensche, Jessup County, Iowa: "Last year it was far worse than reported in my area. This year I'm in the Garden of Eden. We had a close call with a near-Derecho windstorm, but Trump's ear got hurt more than my corn ears!

"Yields will surpass state here, could be 50-75 bushels above last year on corn, 20-25 better on soy. I will be disappointed if we do not harvest all field sum totals over 220/60. Yes, everyone else will get 250/70, but my numbers are honest."

-- Marty VanVliet of Pella, Iowa, said the weather has been what has made for good growing conditions this year. Even with early dry conditions, followed by a two-week break from planting due to rainy and cold weather, both corn and soybeans were in the ground by the end of May.

"Our weather conditions have been almost ideal since planting, with rain coming when we need it," he said. "We expect to have higher yields than we've had in a few years as long as everything continues to go right. We haven't even seen much trouble with nitrogen deficiency or other disease pressure."

He expects to start harvest by the end of August with corn yielding over 200 bushels per acre and soybeans in the 60-bushel-per-acre range.

-- Kirk Brandt, of Corning, Iowa, in the southwest part of the state, said planting started on time in April but was put on hold for about two weeks due to rain and colder conditions.

"We were planting crops in wet soils and have seen some issues with that in the sandy soils," he said. "We have had great crops the last three years, unlike other areas of the state, and now we have had challenges."

Brandt planted soybeans first, and they look to yield about 60 bushels per acre. Corn has had a bit more challenging growing season, and he expects 175 bushels per acre, when the last three years have been 200 to 210 bpa.
