What is TomTom MyDrive Route Planner?

TomTom MyDrive is one of the products of TomTom N.V., a Dutch developer and creator of location technology. The company launched its first-generation satellite navigation devices in 2004. Today, its products are used in more than 29 countries all over Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas.

TomTom is used by Apple as the main mapping data provider in its “Maps”. It is also used by automobile companies like Volkswagen , Toyota , Daimler and many others. Uber also uses TomTom maps and traffic data in more than 300 cities around the world. Another client is Huawei , which uses the maps on its smartphone.

One of its products is TomTom MyDrive. You can download MyDrive with different devices. In both iOS and Android devices. It is a free support app that helps you manage your content and services on TomTom navigation devices.

This app promises to get drivers to their destination not only with the quickest route by the most cost-efficient as well. Even if you know your destination, the evolving traffic conditions can interfere with your trip.

With TomTom MyDrive Route Planner, you can choose the best route before you start your car. You can also set up a personal traffic checker in this app that receives real-time traffic updates.

What You Can Do with TomTom MyDrive Route Planner?

Create routes in mydrive.

Step 1. Go to mydrive.tomtom.com, and log in to your TomTom account.

Step 2. Click the planned route in the menu bar on the left side.

Step 3. Plot your starting point and destination by searching for the addresses or points of interest.

Step 4. MyDrive will give a default route plan with the fastest and most efficient path between point A and point B by clicking FASTEST. Another option is THRILL, which is a more interesting route.

Step 5. Once you are on the THRILL option you can set how winding or hilly the route will be.

Step 6. When you have set the route, you can add stops by clicking on any point on the map you want to stop and clicking ADD STOP.

Step 7. You can also modify your route by holding the left mouse button on any point of your route and dragging it across any point or road you want to drive through.

Additional Features from TomTom MyDrive App

• The MyDrive app can highlight interesting and beautiful roads to make your trip more enjoyable. Simply open the SETTINGS and activate Scenic Segments.
• Once this setting is turned ON, the screen will display segments with green highlights. You can incorporate the scenic segment in your trip by clicking and dragging your route over the road and adjusting it.
• MyDrive can also display suggestions on accommodations, restaurants, and popular attractions. It shares information from TripAdvisor on these points of interest. To access this information, all you need to do is to click the icon at the bottom of the screen based on the category that you want to see on the map.
• Clicking on the points of interest will let you see an overview on the left side of the screen with the information, photos, and reviews. You will also see the button that helps you plan the route easily or you can add it directly to your open planned route.

Share your Route

Publishing your route.

Upload and share your route created on MyDrive with the TomTom Road Trips community. Any members can look at the routes uploaded to roadtrips.tomtom.com to find inspiration for their road planning or to pick one that they can use. To share the route on Road Trips, simply select it under MyRoutes, click the toggle switch: Publish on TomTom Community Routes.

Before publishing your route, make sure to have the following information: photo, description and relevant tag for your route. It will make your route relevant and stand out. When you are done with your presentation, click Save & Publish. Now other members can find, rate, and use your route on roadtrips.tomtom.com.

Sharing your Route

You also share the route you have created onMyDrive via social media by sending the links directly or downloading it as a .gpx file and transferring it manually. The easiest way to do it is by selecting MyRoutes and clicking Share Route.

Share your route on Twitter, Facebook, and default email or click on the link icon to copy the address to the clipboard.

Download the route on your computer and share it manually or import it to your navigation program or device. Just click on the Download button and it will directly save the file as a .gpx file on your computer.

Tomtom MyDrive Route Planner is the perfect choice to plan and optimize your route even if you have multiple places to visit. It can help you plan the shortest route and upload it on your TomTom device.

All you need to do is to input your addresses and click Plan-My-Route. The program will calculate all possible routes and find the best route to connect this list of destinations.

Syncing Plan.TomTom.com routes with the GO Navigation app

When you create a route on Plan.TomTom.com that you want to use in the TomTom GO Navigation app, make sure you select to sync the route.

Follow these steps:

• Use the search on Plan.TomTom.com to plan a route.
• Click Save Route at the bottom.
• Click Save .
• Click Yes to sync the route.

Your route is synchronised with the GO Navigation app as a track.

If you haven’t chosen to sync your route, go to My Items > Routes and select your route. Enable Sync this route as a track with my devices .

If you added way points to your route on Plan.TomTom.com, the app respects them in the routing but they are not shown as stops. To be shown stops, create the route directly in the app.

Route not syncing

If your new route isn’t showing in the app, make sure the sync is enabled in TomTom Services in the app. Also try signing out and back into your TomTom account.

To do this go to Menu > TomTom Services in the app.

Route Planner is Gone - Problems with MyDrive Web

I started to map a trip in Route Planner today and was forced to download MyDrive Web or whatever they call it (I can't find a name for it anywhere in the app). Naturally, I'm having problems. It transferred only a handful out of 100's of my Favorites (now called simply Places) and only 6 out of scores of Routes. Is there any way to get these back? I'd like to plan a more scenic route. I assume that is done by clicking on the gear to the right of "Leave Now Type: Fast" below the list of places. When I click on the gear, though, a white screen pops up and says: Oops! Something went wrong! Incompatible units: and in. Hi @Moxostoma , We already had Plan.TomTom.com available in beta for a while and yesterday switched over. Can you perhaps try deleting cookies to see if that fixes your issues? I have replaced the old MyDrive web content by Plan.TomTom.com in our FAQ yesterday: https://help.tomtom.com/hc/articles/360013960159 Do these steps help? Your places are stored cloud-based. Could you please check again after deleting cookies?  

I ran CCleaner "Custom Clean" and "Registry" three times then "Delete Cookies" in Internet Properties. Then I restarted my computer. I still get "Oops! Something went wrong!" when I press "Leave: Now", "Type: Fast", or the cog wheel. Most of my Favorites are still missing. I'm using Windows 11 Pro on a Lenovo Thinkpad.  

Can you try on another computer?  

What browser are you using? Are your favourites showing on your GO 600?  

Can you press ctrl + R to refresh the page? That should fix the Oops! error.

BUT, if I select say "Thrill" then close the menu to go to a route, it still says "Type: Fast." I guess that the "Route Settings" menu must open in the route I'm working on.  

Yes, it's for that route you're working on. For me it picks Fast if I select it. Edge Windows 10.  

I think fast is the default. Can you select any other options?

I hate the new plan.tomtom thing - MyDrive was much better in so many ways. I'll now use Google or Bing and only use the plan thing in the rare occasions when I need to synch. Such a shame. Please bring MyDrive back!

Apart from: - I find the map much less clear - Much more difficult to add 'via' points - UI is horrible, I think Basically, I like my accelerator / gas pedal on the right - absolutely no reason not to put it on the left, but I happen to like it on the right. I've spent a couple of hours playing with the new Tom-tom interface and Google and Bing - the new Tom-tom interface rates third. MyDrive rated first - I only used Bing for POIs and Google for walking - haven't decided between Google and Bing. Both of the Tom-tom interfaces have some weaknesses - lack of town names until zoomed right in being one. None of them have 'Avoid Area' like Autoroute had - was really handy for avoiding the M25. I'd happily pay for an improved MyDrive.

I spend most of my route planning working around interstate highways. I know I could do it by turning Motorways off, but then, when I have to go through a major city, I would be routed through it on surface streets. Way too slow and stressful. I always thought TomTom Route Planner was too fond of motorways. I wish there was a way to adjust the relative importance of them. Anyway, the problem with "Oops! Something went wrong!" is fixed. "Route settings" appears when I press the cog wheel. Either TomTom did something or, more likely, I uninstalled a couple of the Windows 11 updates I did a few days ago. They were causing problems with some much older software I was using, too. Also, the day after I installed MyDrive Web, all my Places on the old Route Planner appeared. It must have been really slow to download them from the cloud.  

There is no other solution to bypassing a highway when the GPS is set to do not avoid highways is to add stops.

The 3Ready entertainment user experience technology now operates within TomTom’s digital cockpit solution. 3Ready Automotive delivers entertainment to vehicle displays, comprising partner content, apps and services.

The TomTom Road Trips collection enables you to discover the world's most amazing routes, from legendary coastal routes like the Great Ocean Road to classic road trips like Route 66.

Planning a route to a stop

To plan a route to an interesting stop on a road trip, do the following:

• Log into TomTom MyDrive at mydrive.tomtom.com .
• Click on the road trips icon on the left-hand side.

The route is shown on the map together with start and end points and, in some cases, stops (flags).

• Click Start Here to start your route from this point, or Add to My Places or Send to Device .

You can then choose from settings including your vehicle type, fast or thrilling route, etc.

Enter a POI in the search box, for example, "hotel", to search for all hotels near your chosen stop.

You may then get offered a choice of routes as shown below.

• Click on your chosen route option and then use the buttons at the bottom of the box to share your route, save it, or Send to Device .

How the world moved in 2020

As we mark a decade since the TomTom Traffic Index was first launched, we go behind the scenes to reveal how our traffic report gets made and why the 2020 edition is unlike anything we’ve done before.

2020 was a year like no other, changing the way we lived, worked and moved. These profound changes are reflected in this year’s edition of the TomTom Traffic Index. City centers became ghost towns after countries worldwide locked down. Peak hour traffic dwindled as we swapped the daily commute for working from home. Congestion spiked when people left cities en masse to escape new lockdown measures.

Ahead of the release of the TomTom Traffic Index for 2020, we sat down with the team behind this anticipated report. They gave us an exclusive look at what it takes to create the Traffic Index, what made this year unique and what we can expect as we move into 2021.

Q: When did TomTom launch the Traffic Index, and how has it changed over the years?

A: We published the first TomTom Traffic Index in 2011, looking at road congestion levels throughout 2010. The report is now in its tenth year, and with every iteration we keep expanding, looking at more cities, more countries and more data. The first Traffic Index covered 57 cities; in 2020, we analyzed traffic information for 416 cities across 57 countries.

We started out by publishing reports for North America and Europe. We added a report for Asia a few years later and, ultimately, we merged everything into a single global report. In the early days, we also had two separate websites: the TomTom Traffic Index, with historical traffic data, and TomTom City, which showed live traffic data for selected cities. We eventually combined them into the single Traffic Index portal that we have today.

Every year, we also try to look at the data in new and more detailed ways; for example, by adding metrics like time lost in traffic, the best alternative times to travel and congestion levels by time of day and day of the week.

Q: Why did TomTom create the Traffic Index?

A: One of the main reasons why we started publishing the Traffic Index was to help people understand when and where the worst congestion and delays occur, so they could make better choices about when and how they travelled. Initially, our focus was on reaching individual drivers and encouraging them to think about how they could reduce the amount of time they spend in traffic.

As TomTom started expanding into the automotive and enterprise markets, we broadened that core message because we weren’t just addressing consumers anymore, we were also talking to governments, automakers and all other kinds of businesses that rely on traffic information.

Today, our aim is to provide everyone – whether it’s citizens or city planners, business leaders or policymakers – with objective, authoritative traffic information, which they can use to help reduce congestion, improve road safety and lower emissions.

Q: How long does it take to prepare the Traffic Index each year, and what goes into that process?

A: Every year is different, but it usually takes us about three months to put everything together. We start by analyzing the data, which is continually collected by TomTom across the year. The main metrics we look at are congestion levels, time spent driving in rush hour and kilometers driven. Then, we work with design and development teams to visualize the data and prepare the main Traffic Index portal and all the individual city pages.

Obviously, 2020 was not an ordinary year, and that changed the process considerably. We’ve worked on this report for almost the entire year! We’ve analyzed a lot more data and gone much deeper into it than ever before. In fact, we were analyzing congestion information almost continuously because the traffic situation across the world was changing so quickly. The result is that this year’s report includes much more granular detail. For instance, we’ve looked at individual days where congestion levels were exceptionally low compared to 2019. We’ve also analyzed daily commute patterns to see how traffic at peak hours has fluctuated in each city.

Q: What else has been different in 2020?

A: The focal point of the Traffic Index is the city ranking that shows which cities around the world have the worst levels of congestion. We wanted to keep this as our central element but seeing as 2020 has been such an anomaly in terms of traffic flows, we wanted to present the data somewhat differently. For example, it didn’t make sense to showcase cities that improved their congestion levels – like we’ve done in past years – because almost all cities worldwide (with a few exceptions) have seen a reduction in traffic compared to 2019 due to lockdowns and restrictions on movement.

For 2020, our aim was to focus on the ways in which traffic has changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to highlight some of the most interesting events from this year.

Q: What were some of the most memorable stories that came out of 2020? Was there anything that really surprised you?

A: It was really striking to see the mass exodus of people from capitals across Europe when new lockdowns were announced, and how that was reflected in the traffic. The day before Greece’s second lockdown was the most congested day in Athens in 2020. Meanwhile, in Paris, we saw traffic jams reach a record length of 700km on the day before the city introduced new lockdown measures.

Congestion levels in the United States dropped sharply and have stayed low. We really weren’t expecting to see that. Most other cities – especially those in Europe –experienced similar dips, but traffic went back up once restrictions ended. In contrast, congestion levels in US cities have remained consistently low, with traffic in most places still very far away from normal levels. It’s surprising because there’s this general impression that things have gone back to normal faster in the US and people are moving around more freely, but the traffic data tells a different story.

Q: Was 2020 just an anomaly, or are there trends that you expect to continue into 2021?

A: 2020 has definitely been a year unlike any other for traffic, but 2021 will be too! Things aren’t going to return to normal overnight. There have already been significant shifts in people’s behavior: We’re working from home more. We’re travelling less often, and our trips are shorter. We’re using more online shopping and food delivery services. However, it’s hard to predict whether these trends will stick around. We can only keep looking at the data and follow the changes as they unfold.

We’re really interested to see if the reduced levels of congestion we saw in 2020 will persist, and if rush hour traffic will continue to improve. The last year has shown that when we act together, even small actions like choosing to work from home or taking fewer trips, can make a big difference to traffic congestion levels, wasted time, fuel use and air quality. It would be such a huge positive if we could come out on the other side of the pandemic with lasting improvements to mobility. It’s up to all of us – governments, businesses and individuals – to reduce traffic and emissions, and we hope that the insights from this year’s Traffic Index encourage people to take meaningful and long-lasting steps towards a safer, cleaner and congestion-free world.

Playing it safe or switching it up: How Europe will travel in 2024

It’s that time of the year again. As you pack your suitcases and head out on your summer vacation, we spoke to over 2,400 of your fellow European travelers to find out the latest travel trends. Whether you like following the crowd or heading off the beaten track, we're here to help you prepare for everything that awaits you this summer.

The internet is abuzz with memes about how much Europeans love their summer holidays, and with almost 75% of Europeans planning on going on a summer holiday, our survey confirms this trend. When it comes to the preferred month for travel, our respondents are split evenly over June, July, August and September. It could be that deterred by extremely hot and dry to unnaturally cold and wet experiences in the summer of 2023, vacationers want to try their luck in the quieter month of September.

(Some) Europeans go local

In recent years, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of Europeans wanting to travel ‘locally’ — with almost 43% planning to stay in their own countries, and another 42% planning to venture out, but stay within Europe. In our 2022 summer survey , 58% of respondents had confessed to having a greater appreciation for destinations close to them, and that still seems to ring true. For 63% of people, this is a destination they’ve already visited before.

Of course, with their great weather and abundance of exciting destinations, 62% of Spaniards plan to travel within their country this summer. At only 18% and 24%, however, their respective Dutch and German counterparts aren’t as keen on traveling within the Netherlands or Germany. We’re not surprised. In the same vein as wanting to stay close to home, when it comes to their summer holiday, most Europeans reject the hustle and bustle of cities for the serenity of nature. For almost 32% of respondents, forests and nature parks are their ideal holiday destinations, while 26%, 19% and 15% prefer small villages, coastal locations and mountains. At 48%, nearly half of the Dutchies we spoke to prefer the outdoors, and love camping out in the forest or a nature park. It's no wonder then that they’re also the Europeans most likely to choose a caravan or RV as their preferred mode of transport on their holiday at 28%.

Most travelers will hit the road

With 40% choosing their mode of travel based on flexibility, their choices reflect trends we’ve seen in recent years. Nearly 70% Europeans plan to drive a car on their holiday, 14% will drive an RV and 7% will embark on a motorbike adventure. Just like in our 2023 summer survey , only 8% will choose to fly.

41% of drivers like enjoying the scenery while on their road trips and 23% like stopping their cars and exploring, which isn’t always an option with other forms of transportation. Cars and RVs also win out because they’re more fun and convenient for our respondents. That's probably why only about 2% drivers have made the switch to EVs, while 7% drive hybrids, with a whopping 91% of drivers still sticking to conventional petrol and diesel cars.

On being quizzed about their reasons for not going electric, 19% of drivers cite time spent on charging as their main reason. 18% also say they’re apprehensive about how reliable charging options on the road are, while 16% still blame range anxiety, or the worry that their EV will run out of steam before they make it to their destination. TomTom’s EV research has shown that 20% of charging sessions fail because of issues with charging stations such as incompatible payment options, and these responses are proof that that’s a huge deterrent for potential EV drivers.

Going green

In recent years, many travelers have incorporated more climate conscious practices into their road trips. While 52% of European travelers still cite fuel as the largest expense while traveling, a solid 43% are ready to alter their plans to reduce their carbon footprint. Our respondents have some creative ways to do this up their sleeve.

From switching to a bike or trains for part of their trip to avoiding highways and crowded roads so they can drive at consistent speeds, TomTom drivers are ready to go the extra mile for the planet. Be it choosing the ‘Eco route’ option on their TomTom device or app to drive in the most fuel-efficient manner, or checking traffic conditions beforehand so they don’t find themselves idling midway, several respondents also trust TomTom to help them make a difference.

Who’s tagging along?

When it comes to summer adventures, the destination and how you get there make a huge difference. But in the end, a lot depends on who you embark on the journey with. Unsurprisingly, partners make the most popular travel companions, with 52% choosing them. 30% of Europeans are going to travel with their families this summer, with 9% daring to take on a solo trip. The remaining 9% will vacation with their friends.

But it’s not just humans that are taking these summer holidays, many are bringing their animal companions too. 13% of respondents said their holiday would be incomplete without their dogs, while only 2% are bringing their cats along. But close to 3% are mixing it up and taking some rather interesting pets with them, so don’t be shocked if the beach chair next to you is taken by a cockroach, a canary, a bunny, some mice or even a horse.
