Trek 950: Restoring Mountain Bikes from the 1990s

Some links may include affiliate opportunities.

Mountain bikes from the 1990s were amazing. For many of us, these were our first real bikes so there’s a sense of nostalgia that comes with these wonderful machines.

I love this bike and it’s always a work in progress. 2021 updates are over here .

Steel is real. The fact that these bikes are made of steel means they last and there are still tons of these bikes around that still have much life in them.

My favorite of all 1990s mountain bikes is the Trek 900 series. My dad owned this bike when I was a kid and I would take it out at any opportunity. The bike was amazing and still sits in my memory as something spectacular.

Build Kit for this 1990 Trek 950

Drivetrain:.

  • Truvativ Power spline Bottom Bracket
  • SRAM SX Power Spline Crankset
  • Sram 9 Speed Chain
  • Microshift 9 Speed Thumb Shifter (Initially I did run a 3x, but then I switch to a 1x and removed the front shifter)
  • Cassette. I was able to modify a 9 speed cassette down to 8 speed and this fit on the original 7 speed hub. Doing this allowed me to use the 9 speed shifter. If you stick with the 7 speed, you’ll want to adjust accordingly.
  • Tektro Cantilever Brakes
  • Short Pull Brake Levers
  • Cables and housing

Other Parts I’ve Added

  • Mone Meal Replacement Bar
  • Brooks B67 Saddle

Finding a Bike for Restoration

If you keep your eyes on Craigslist or Ebay, there are many opportunities to find a bike for restoration. I found this bike on Craigslist.

It’s a 1990 Trek 950. Size 21 inches.

Original owner had it listed. She’d ridden it for many years, then it was left in her garage. Still had original tires on it!!

The one downside for me with this bike is the shock. I didn’t feel like rebuilding one or adding a new one. I wanted to go back to fully rigid, however, where in the world would I match the purple.

This bike is in decent shape, but I had plans to powder coat black and start over.

Step 1: Removing Everything From Your Bike

My first step was to remove everything.

Step 2: Powder Coat the Frame and Buy a Fork

I was able to find a powder coating shop near by that did the project for $125. What a deal. Results were impressive.

Step 3: Clean Up Bike Components

A lot of dirt on these suckers after almost 30 years of riding. I replaced the chain rings just to give it a nicer look. Also, polished up the crank.

Step 4: Replace Components that Need Replacing

The most fun part of bike projects is figuring out which pieces require which size components. What’s going to fit, what can you get. How do you want this project to turn out?

On of the big changes I made was converting from the threaded fork / headset to threadless. This allowed for new fork, handlebars, stem.

I also moved over to microshift friction shifters.

Any projects you have in mind?

Let me know, would love to hear about it.

Acronym for all terrain bike.

Trek's exclusive fork design.

A tube having different wall thicknesses along its length, while its diameter remains constant.

Low alloy steel with a medium carbon content, that gets its name from the primary alloying elements, chromium and molybendium. It has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is considerably stronger, harder more durable than mild carbon steel.

Trek's exclusive fork design using taper gauge tubing and provides a blade with more elasticity for better shock absoption.

The thickness of the tube at both ends is thicker than in the centre.

Shifting system, where part of the handlebar grip rotates back and forth, clicking into each gear.

Low alloy steel that can withstand significant stress before breaking or becoming deformed. The term 'tensile' refers to the amount of stress a material can endure before failing.

Steel tubing connected with socket-like sleeves, called lugs.

Shimano's multi-condition brake system with specialized shoes, levers and cables designed for enhanced stopping power in rain, mud and snow.

A house brand for Trek during the 80s and early 90s.

Optimal Dimension; Trek's large diameter, thin wall tubing design.

Oversize; Trek's large diameter, thin wall tubing design.

Shimano's oversize hub system designed to minimize wheel flex.

Shimano's under handlebar, two-finger shift system, giving riders the ability to downshift more than one gears in one stroke.

Brake lever system that lets riders adjust braking power modulation.

Shimano Integrated Shifting. Shift mechanism indents control cable advance for quick, precise gear changes without over-shifting.

Shimano Linear Response. Friction reducing levers, cables and calipers.

Japanese steel tubing manufacturer for bicycle frames.

A tube having a maller diameter at one end and a larger diameter on the other end.

Tungsten Inert Gas welding is an arc welding process that produces the weld with a non-consumable tungsten electrode.

Trek-designed components. The higher the number ona given component, the higher its performance level.

Three different wall thicknesses along the length.

American tubing manufacturer.

Special all-terrain tubing, developed to withstand demands of off-road cycling.

A lighter weight version of the AT frame set, featuring a triple-butted down tube.

Zero Excess; Trek's guiding principle of making stronger bikes with less material.

Retail Selling Tips

Pat Sullivan, the legendary bicycle salesman from Wauwatosa , Wisconsin, once sold 59 bicycles in a single day- Now one of Trek's Regional Sales Managers, Pat shares his top selling tips with you.

1.       Always remember that your customer is a person, and treat them with respect.

2.       People do not like to be SOLD anything, but they love to BUY!

3.       People who enter your store want to BUY a bicycle. Even if someone says they are "just looking", more often than not, they are looking for the right bicycle. Help them look!

4.       Find out what your customer HAS , then find out what the person WANTS . The key is either features or benefits. Make sure that you listen carefully to determine exactly what your customer wants or needs.

5.       Repeat back to your customer what they have told you in # . It is much easier to sell features and benefits when you both agree on what features and benefits are important.

6.       Do not knock a competing product or store. Just as people don’t Like to be sold, but like to buy, people feel better buying from someone with a positive attitude.

7.       Present a bicycle to fit the needs of your customer.   When making your presentation continue to point out the features and benefits that are important to your particular customer.

8.       Always keep your presentation positive. A positive presentation will have the customer FEELING that he is enjoying the bicycle he is about to buy, and he will FEEL good about buying it.

9.       Get the customer involved in the presentation. Have the customer click an SIS lever, open and close a OR skewer, etc .. The more confident the customer becomes in the product, the more likely he will buy the product.

10.   Ask for the order.   The logical ending to a good presentation is a request for action from the customer. For example, finish your presentation by asking the customer if he likes the bicycle. If they reply "yes", ask them if they would like to take the bike with them.

TREK ALUMINUM MOUNTAIN BIKES

Trek prides itself on being an industry leader. For 1989, Trek is once again at the forefront with its new series of aluminum mountain bikes. In an effort to create the ultimate off-road machine, Trek's engineers have updated the geometry, improved durability and reduced weight.

  • Bonded construction ensures greater strength and durability as compared to welded frames. Bonding a frame eliminates the need for heat treating, which compromises a frame's strength.
  • Forged frame fittings are new for 1989, they are stronger than the previous fittings and reduce the frame weight by over 7 ounces.
  • All of the Trek aluminum mountain bikes benefit from a new competition geometry with 73 degree seat angles and 71 degree head angles. Chainstays are a short 16.9 inches.
  • By incorporating new frame fittings and tapered stays, our engineers have been able to remove a total of ten ounces of frame weight.
  • The model 8500 is built with double-butted 7000 series aluminum tubing which saves four ounces of frame weight. 7000 series aluminum has a better strength-to-weight ratio than other aluminum. This higher strength allows Trek's engineers to specify thinner walled tubing for lighter weight and a livelier ride while maintaining the necessary strength in the event of a crash.
  • New for 1989 is a 16.5- frame size and seat stay mounted cantilevers.
  • Trek's new polyurethane paint process is more transparent and brilliant than before, as well as more durable and fade resistant.

TREK SINGLETRACK MOUNTAIN BIKES

In designing a new series of domestically produced mountain bikes, our engineers sought to develop the lightest, strongest chromoly mountain bike available. In doing so they specified low temperature brazing, allowing the use of lighter more resilient frame tubing, rather than the heavier tubing required for high temperature TIG welding.

Key Features Include:

  • Low temperature brazing produces a light and strong chromoly frame
  • Cast seat lug reinforces this highly stressed area
  • New geometry for precise handling and efficient climbing
  • Produced in the United States at a competitive price
  • One half pound lighter than TIG welded frames

  • Function specific designs ensure that each bike features the ideal equipment for its intended use, whether commuting in the city or taking on the mountains.

TREK ADVANCED MATERIAL ROAD BIKES

Key Features:

  • Bonded construction ensures greater strength and durability as compared to welded frames. Bonding together a frame eliminates the need for heat treating, which compromises a frame's strength.
  • Trek advanced material bikes have attractive joints and mid-sized tubing.
  • Forged frame fittings are new for 1989, they are stronger than castings and save 5 ounces of frame weight.
  • Double-butted tubing is used on the models 1500 and 2000 to improve the frame's ride qualities and save four ounces of frame weight.
  • New fork geometry on all carbon and aluminum bikes provides for quicker handling by decreasing the amount of trail.
  • Trek built aluminum forks on the models 1400 and up are more comfortable than steel and just as stiff while saving 7 ounces.
  • Trek advanced material bikes are among the most comfortable machines on the market while still being stiff and efficient.
  • 7000 series aluminum tubing is used on the models 1500 and 2000. 7000 series aluminum has a better strength to-weight ratio than other aluminums. This higher strength allows Trek's engineers to specify thinner walled tubing for lighter weight and a livelier ride while maintaining the necessary strength in the event of a crash.

Any differences between old Trek 930, 950 and 990 frames?

1989 trek 950 singletrack

GottaGo said: Yo Nate, Below is a link to a picture of what the lugs on my frame look like. I looked on Bikepedia and 1993 is the last year of the lugged frame. But according to Bikepedia, that bike should be equipped with a 7 speed rear wheel and a pre-threadless headset. My frame has a 1 1/8" threadless fork and a 9 speed rear wheel slides right in - suggesting the frame is designed for a 8 speed rear cassette. FWW, the Bikepedia website does not seem to have all the years the 970 was produced, so maybe take its info with a grain of salt. I checked again the serial numbers on the vintage Trek website with what I have. While it doesn't shed any light on the year, clearly it is a mid-90s 970, 20" frame. Whatever it is, I like it! I'm thinking about maybe repainting it in an anodized burnt orange. https://gallery.mtbr.com/data/mtbr/500/trek9905.jpg Click to expand...

Good suggestion. According to Vintage Trek (VT), the color of the 1993 930 SHX is electric plum. I pulled the fork and there is what I would say is basic fire engine red paint inside the headset. That's consistent with the '93 970 mountain bike (non-suspension) which, according to VT, is simply "red with black decals". Still nothing conclusive. The 1 1/8" head tube, rear wheel spacing and lugs don't add up. In the some of the stuff I found online, there are suggestions that the Trek employees were allowed to use the company tools to build their own frames. Maybe this is one of those? Thanks for all the suggestions and insights, its fun. Now, on to the next phase of the project - refinishing the frame.

1993 TREK 970 everything adds up. 1993 TREK 970 everything adds up. You have a color match, Lug match and Did you look at the picture 970 in the1993 catalog? http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/93/Trek93.pdf Trek use 1 1/8 headtube from 1991 on (Just checked stem from My Brothers 1991 970, Versus my 1989 and 1990 Treks), Lugs up through 1993, 135 mm rear spacing on my 1989 950 and my 1990 930. Seat Cluster Lug and Front Derailleur routing puts your bike at 1993.

Mtnbeer, we have a wrap! I hadn't checked out the 1993 catalog. The picture confirms what I've got. Thanks as well, for confirming the details on the rest of your vintage Trek herd.

Dirt or Die

^Nice bike! I have a 1991 970. Extremely well built frame with beautiful lugs like yours. The bike oozes quality and not only is the frame bullet proof, but the paint job they did on those bikes is extremely durable. It does a great job of protecting that true temper OX tubing they don't make for bikes anymore. I have been looking for a '95 990 and want to do the same with the brakes and use a Rockshox Recon 80mm that I have laying around. How is the rear braking with that set up and what brakes are you running? They look like BB7s, but can't tell for sure. Also, what is the head and seat angle with that fork and the travel? One reason I want a '95 is because it is suspension corrected, but it does not have lugs. The years with lugs are not suspension correct, but I really like the lugged frames. Oh, you might be able to remove the v-brake posts on the fork since you don't need them on.

Thanks for the warning! After reading your post I looked at my fork and could see the seam between the parts and how the posts held it together.

I’ve recently got back into the bike scene since being out ill for several years. Still not fully recovered, but putting together a low-budget project bike is just what the doctor ordered to get me moving forward. Looking at doing a 90’s Trek 950/970/990. From other posts I see they are lugged from 91-93 and tig welded from 94 and up. I see the frame specs have changes slightly between the lugged and the tig welded groups. I love the look of the lugged frames, but am wondering if the newer tig welded frames are lighter and have better/refined geometry. Any opinions here? BTW, I live in Colorado and like to do single track and mountain rides. TIA.

How to ride singletrack – essential skills for new mountain bikers

From rocks and roots to jumps and berms, here are our tips to riding your local singletrack trails better

Ryan Simonovich rides singletrack in Colorado

If you are a mountain biker, chances are that you've already ridden singletrack as it's one of the most common types of mountain bike trail . Mountain bike trail systems are often designed around singletrack but it's also common when riding natural trails as well, so knowing how to ride singletrack is one of the most important skills to master as you progress.

What is singletrack? Well, singletrack trails are usually around 12 inches (30cm) in width, but they might be wider or narrower. Mountain bikes are designed to ride singletrack trails fast and efficiently and even push the boundaries of what can be done on a given trail.

What can be found on singletrack mountain bike trails varies widely. Some are smooth while others are rocky and rough. Some are designed to be ridden uphill and others are sculpted to maximize the downhill fun. You'll probably encounter rocks, roots, logs, and even jumps and drops.

It's all a lot to take in, but every ride presents a chance to practice new mountain bike skills . Here are our tips on how to ride singletrack, so you can ride your local trails better, faster, and with less effort.

Santa Cruz wheels

Look along the trail

One of the most fundamental skills to practice when riding singletrack is to look ahead. Trails that are narrow and technical require intense focus, and looking ahead will help you navigate all of the different features. But even on easier trails, you'll feel pretty awkward if you don't look to where you are going.

Your eyes will naturally pull your body in the direction that they're looking. So if you are staring at a tree on the side of the trail, you will be more likely to crash into that tree. But if you look ahead at the trail, you'll stay on the trail.

Riding singletrack fast and fluidly is all about linking together the various sections of the trail. A key component to that is corners. Looking ahead is also beneficial when cornering. Looking down the trail past the exit of the corner will help you ride through the turn easier.

Pumping the trail

The obvious way to increase your speed when riding any trail is to hit the pedals, but there's another and more fluid way in which you can give yourself more momentum. By compressing your body on the downslopes of undulating sections and then extending your body upwards on the upslopes, you can give yourself more speed.

This motion is called pumping and while it can take some practice to get right, done well it can be just as effective as getting in some quick pedal strokes, but has the advantage of being feeling smoother more efficient. Timing is everything with each pump and a great place to learn the technique is at your nearest pump track.

A downhill rider rounds a berm

Tackling corners and berms

Learning to corner effectively is probably the most important basic skill to master as a mountain biker. The kind of corner you'll most commonly encounter are flat corners. These can be some of the most difficult to get around because traction is often sparse.

The best mountain bike tires are designed to dig into the ground, which provides the grip and traction that prevents you from falling. On flat corners, the rider has to be more intentional about digging their tires into the ground and finding that grip. This can be accomplished by leaning the bike over and lowering your outside foot so that the outside crank is in the six o'clock position. It's also important to stay balanced on the bike and keep weight over the front tire, as that's usually the first to slide out.

Trails with berms are a bit easier. Berms are banked turns that are built by trail builders to make corners easier and create a better experience on the trail. A lot of the same flat cornering technique applies when learning how to ride berms , but you don't have to worry about grip as much because the berm provides much-needed stability.

When the turns get really tight, they turn into switchbacks, which can sometimes exceed more than 180-degrees. These are challenging to ride down as choosing  how to ride switchbacks greatly depends on the corner, they are also used to make climbing up steep slopes possible and easier.

On some corners, you don't have to worry about traction as much. Slight bends in the trail can be ridden without even touching the brakes - simply enjoy the speed and flow.

Riding roots and rocks

You'll encounter rocks and roots on the vast majority of mountain bike trails, particularly rocky sections of trail are called rock gardens.

Another feature that makes trails more technically challenging is off-camber sections. This is when the tread of the trail is sloping away from the direction of travel. This is another scenario where traction is critical.

The first step when figuring out how to ride rock gardens and roots is to pick a line. Sometimes there is a clear path through the mess, but other times there are multiple possible paths. Generally, you want to pick the smoothest and quickest looking line, but you have to consider if there are potential challenges with that line. Sometimes the fastest line is not the most obvious one.

The challenge of riding rocks and roots is compounded when there are wet conditions, as roots and rocks can become slippery. In this case, line choice becomes more critical, and those who know how to ride in the rain will know that it's super important to not touch your brakes when on slippery surfaces in order to not lose traction and quickly meet the ground.

A cross-country racer rides through a loose rock garden

Hitting jumps and drops

Jumps and drops look super cool to ride but are also quite intimidating. It's important to take things steady and work your way up to bigger features as your skill and confidence progresses. Easier trails will feature alternate lines or jumps that can be easily rolled over. But more advanced trails could feature jumps and drops where air time is mandatory.

Confidence is a huge part of tackling jumps. Pump tracks are a good place to begin learning how to jump. You can pull up off a roller or small jump to begin understanding what it feels like to have both wheels off the ground.

Then you can move on to tabletop jumps. These jumps don't have a gap in the middle, so they are ideal for practicing. Tabletops are good for learning how much speed is needed for a given gap as well as controlling yourself and your bike in the air. Finally, once you are comfortable you can move onto double jumps and gaps.

Drops require a lot of the same skills. Start by rolling off a curb and landing with both wheels at the same time. Then you can move onto bigger drops and more natural terrain.

Danny Hart taking to the air

Corners, technical features, and jumps and drops are the majority of what you will find on singletrack trails. Once you practice it all and start to become confident in your abilities, the feeling of flying down a trail is unbeatable.

Remember to practice proper mountain biking etiquette . Lots of trails are multi-use, meaning that you'll encounter hikers and other trail users. If you're not at a specified mountain bike park or trail, there could be uphill riders and traffic too.

Once you've mastered your local trails, there are countless other singletrack trails around the world to explore, with an infinite combination of features. So keep on riding and exploring.

Ryan Simonovich has been riding and racing for nearly a decade. He got his start as a cross-country mountain bike racer in California, where he cultivated his love for riding all types of bikes. Ryan eventually gravitated toward enduro and downhill racing but has also been found in the occasional road and cyclo-cross events. Today, he regularly rides the trails of Durango, Colorado, and is aiming to make a career out of chronicling the sport of cycling.

The Moscow Music Peace Festival was a rock concert that took place in the USSR on 12 and 13 August 1989 at Central Lenin Stadium (now called Luzhniki Stadium) in Moscow. Occurring during the glasnost era, it was one of first hard rock and heavy metal acts from abroad that were granted permission to perform in the capital city, (being the first the ten shows the British band Uriah Heep played from 7 to 16 December 1987 at the Olympic Stadium). Over 100,000 people attended and it was broadcast live to 59 nations including MTV in the United States. The event promoted understanding between the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War and also raised money to help those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The concert featured six bands from abroad and three Russian bands. The concert ended with the various band members participating in jam session. An album and documentary were released.

It inspired the 1990 song "Wind of Change" by Scorpions, one of the bands that performed at the concert. The song became one of the best selling singles of all time.

Modeled as a "Russian Woodstock" the concert was a joint production by Russian musician Stas Namin and American music manager Doc McGhee.

The concert was put together by the Make a Difference Foundation, its founder, rock producer and manager Doc McGhee, Stas Namin and other major players in the Soviet Union and the United States. It is often stated that McGhee agreed to bring his artists to Moscow after becoming involved in a drug scandal himself and wishing to avoid a jail sentence, but he explicitly denied that in 2011. "We always wanted to go over to Moscow and do the first rock show in the Soviet Union. I wanted to do their Woodstock." Since it had also been part of that plan that the proceeds would go to Make a Difference and doctors would be brought to the USSR to teach methods of treating addiction (Soviet doctors at the time primarily used electroshock therapy for that purpose), he did not expect the sentencing judge would have denied him the opportunity.

Mötley Crüe have been on record stating they were upset with McGhee at this point in time. They felt McGhee was favoring Bon Jovi, whom he also managed, and whom Crüe disdained. When Bon Jovi closed the show, they used pyrotechnics, which Mötley Crüe had been told they could not do (McGhee claims it was a malfunction on one side of the stadium that he did not hear because he was backstage). Sebastian Bach of Skid Row, whom McGhee also managed, says Tommy Lee went over to him and said "Your manager's a fucking asshole" and chugged most of a bottle of vodka Bach had been drinking (up to this point, Lee has said, it was the first time the band had done a show sober). Then he ran up to McGhee, punched him in the face and told him he could go manage The Chipmunks because he was no longer Mötley Crüe's manager. Bon Jovi fired him as well shortly afterwards. Lee and his bandmates were still so angry they refused to fly home on the same plane as McGhee. The concert was also often chided by the bands themselves as being hypocritical, as many of the musicians were drinking or using drugs at the time despite the ties with the Make a Difference Foundation.

The event was held over two days in Moscow's largest stadium, Central Lenin Stadium (now called Luzhniki Stadium), which has a seating capacity of about 100,000. However, as the concert used a proscenium stage rather than an arena stage, about a thousand seats behind the stage were not occupied. About 120,000 tickets were sold in total. The event was the first rock concert to be held at the stadium, which had previously been used primarily for sporting events.

Noted in books such as Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal, the concert also showcased the ego clashes which eventually helped lead to the collapse of glam metal shortly thereafter. Many of the bands argued over who went on before whom, and many were envious of Bon Jovi, who not only headlined the event but also had a much more theatrical stage spectacle and longer set times; each band was supposed to do a stripped-down show with just music and no spectacular theatrics. Jon Bon Jovi supposedly offered his headlining spot to Ozzy Osbourne after Ozzy threatened to not go through with his set. Ozzy's set was initially scheduled before Mötley Crüe's set. Apparently, Ozzy felt his band was bigger and he should go on after Mötley Crüe. To solve the problem, Mötley Crüe went on before Ozzy but the tape was edited so it appeared Ozzy went on before Mötley Crüe to the viewers back in the U.S. Those involved in the show's production felt this was an egotistical bush move on Ozzy's behalf since this was supposed to be for charity, and left many in the rock 'n roll community confused since Ozzy and Mötley Crüe toured together for Ozzy's Bark at the Moon and Mötley Crüe's Shout at the Devil albums, respectively, and became fast friends during the tour.

The event became known for inspiring the song "Wind of Change" by the Scorpions, a ballad which became a soundtrack to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the end of Soviet Union The Crooked Media podcast "Winds of Change" provides some evidence to suggest that Doc McGhee was covertly leveraged by the US Government to produce this concert as a vehicle to create an origin story for the Scorpions song as part of a secret culture operation to influence the Soviet government.

Each tape was my own master tape. This is the FM broadcast of the festival,

not the video soundtrack, and it comes from my master tapes. Both days

of the festival were recorded, then diced & sliced to make up the many

broadcasts that Doc McGee had licensed out. There were FM radio broadcasts,

and pay-per-views, different cable systems had different versions

of the broadcast.

My pay-per-view had different songs than my friend 2 cities away.

This recording shows some of the technical problems, some apparent like Skid Row's sound,

their set sounds like it was the sound check.

Ozzy's intro music is still playing 2 minutes into 'I Don't Know.' You can hear bleed-through from

technicians setting up and checking mics for the next band periodically through out the

entire show, during other bands' sets. I missed the beginning of 'Hound Dog' due to a

tape flip, so I faded that in. I took out the interviews and sound bites between sets, as well as the commercials,

so there are fades-in between each band's set."
